The proposal analyzes the site as a series of existing flows or “routes” across the landscape. The negotiation of both constructed and natural systems establishes the logic of the site plan and the orientation and organization of the new home. Conceptually, the project becomes a highly choreographed knot at the center of these routes, drawing strands in, engaging them with others, and propelling them back out again. The project’s intent is to capture and harness the physical and ephemeral sense of these latent natural movements as a way to promote in the architecture the wanderlust the surrounding landscape inspires. At heart, the client’s initial family agenda--a home as antidote to the city and basecamp for exploration--establishes the ethos and design objectives of the work.

This Martha's Vineyard style custom home includes many elements that establish a traditional East Coast home: white horizontal clapboard siding, tapered wood columns, shutters and red brick wainscoting. The predominantly red, white and blue color scheme honors the history of America, and a handmade American flag quilt underscores the theme. The outdoor space expands the living area, yet still feels intimate and contained.

A micro-addition and new layout turns 1980’s cramped kitchen into bright, light-filled collaborative kitchen space.
The cramped, isolated kitchen in this 1980’s era home did not fit our clients’ lifestyle nor take advantage of the beautiful views of the nearby pond and woods. They longed for a functional yet fabulous space to support collaborative cooking and family gatherings. A micro-addition facilitated a new layout that both opened to and enlivened their existing living and dining spaces. A bold tri-color palette along with pro-level appliances and impeccable finish detailing gives them everything they desired and more.

The House by the Creek is an example of design subtlety, finely executed detailing, and preservation of a riparian corridor. The project sits on a wooded lot in an established Dallas neighborhood bordered by Turtle Creek and a busy four-lane street yet feels serene because of heavy tree cover and the orientation of the home. The project modestly uses high quality materials that blend easily with the landscape: slate from India, Texas limestone, almondrilla wood, stainless steel, and copper. Experience of Tary Arterburn while at mesa.

A shared therapy and Zoom space for the couple, the office retained its original built-in cabinetry, now painted in a silver-blue tone to harmonize with the home’s lightened palette.
