Hammer & Hand, Alice Design, and Domestic Arts worked together to transform an unfinished basement into a multifunctional guest bedroom and family room. The finished basement now serves many purposes: family entertainment room, guest bedroom, extra storage, laundry room, and mudroom when entering from the carport. When not in use by guests, a Murphy bed (built by Big Branch Woodworking) is easily stored away to make extra space. Photography by Jeff Amram.

this dog wash is a great place to clean up your pets and give them the spa treatment they deserve. There is even an area to relax for your pet under the counter in the padded cabinet.

Our client wanted a more open environment, so we expanded the kitchen and added a pantry along with this family room addition. We used calm, cool colors in this sophisticated space with rustic embellishments. Inspiration for a timeless home theater remodel in San Francisco with a wall-mounted tv

A professional-quality gym in your own basement, complete with workout bars and mirrors! If you like music and the tv with your workout, let Don know and he will add the correct wiring to the project! Add a bathroom with a shower, and you will pop out of your basement workout ready to go!

This used to be a completely unfinished basement with concrete floors, cinder block walls, and exposed floor joists above. The homeowners wanted to finish the space to include a wet bar, powder room, separate play room for their daughters, bar seating for watching tv and entertaining, as well as a finished living space with a television with hidden surround sound speakers throughout the space. They also requested some unfinished spaces; one for exercise equipment, and one for HVAC, water heater, and extra storage. With those requests in mind, I designed the basement with the above required spaces, while working with the contractor on what components needed to be moved. The homeowner also loved the idea of sliding barn doors, which we were able to use as at the opening to the unfinished storage/HVAC area.

The finished basement showcases a charming modern farmhouse style, blending rustic warmth with contemporary elegance. The spacious billiards room is perfect for entertaining, featuring a sleek billiards table, stylish lighting, and cozy seating areas. Adjacent to this, the game room offers a fun, inviting space equipped with arcade games, a shuffleboard, or a large flat-screen for movie nights. The exercise room provides a dedicated area for fitness, complete with modern equipment and ample space for stretching and workouts. Warm wood accents, neutral tones, and thoughtful design details create a welcoming atmosphere that seamlessly combines relaxation, recreation, and active living.

This basement’s bar area rivals any sports bar! The large football mural is actually laser-cut customized wallpaper. The bar itself was created out of reclaimed pine with a honed granite counter and support bars and footrails made from reclaimed black pipes. The front of the bar has wood trim offset by steel inlays. Behind the bar there is a sink and beverage center, complete with an icemaker and wine refrigerator. That distinctive backsplash is whitewashed “Chicago” brick and it is a great focal point that offsets the TV. The adjacent eating area has weathered shiplap walls and a silver, tin ceiling. The column separating the two spaces is wood with steel inlays, the same steel that was used beneath the front of the bar.

This bathroom is found in the basement of the house. With low ceilings and no windows, the designer was able to add some life to this room through his design. The double vanity is perfect for him and hers. The shower includes a steam unit for a perfect spa retreat in your own home. The tile flowing over to the ceiling brings in the whole room. The mirrors are electric mirrors which include great lighting and a tv inside the mirror itself! Overall, it's the perfect escape from a long day at work or just to simply relax in.
