After years living with an old and dark kitchen, Stephen and Victoria Billcliff decided it was time to make a change. “We wanted it to be more of a family room than a kitchen, somewhere light that we could get together” explained Victoria.
Our designer Marc recommended an open plan layout to meet their needs, so the couple agreed to knock through to the dining area. “We had a peninsular and wall unit previously, making the room feel cramped and cut off from the rest of the house.
They knocked down two walls so that our kitchen could flow through to the dining room”. Once the decision had been made to make the space open plan, Stephen and Victoria chose a modern design with high gloss doors in stylish cashmere.
To encourage the flow through to the dining area, Marc chose handle-less doors and a curved edge for a streamlined and stripped back effect.
This was complemented with a quartz worktop,
NEFF appliances and an 1810 sink.
Marc drew up a 3D design that the couple loved, but they had a change of mind further down the line. “After careful consideration I decided that I’d like a separate utility room to keep the mess out of the kitchen” says Victoria. “I was worried that it would be too late, but Neil and Marc spent hours adjusting all the plans for us, sending us emails back and forth until we were completely happy”.
Once the plans had been finalised, it was time for the couple to have their brand new kitchen fitted. “A few minor problems came up during installation, but these were fixed straight away” Stephen explained. “The workmen were excellent and, even though we were on holiday for part of the installation, we knew our house was in safe hands”.
The work was completed in around 4 weeks, including building work and an additional downstairs bathroom. “Nothing was too much trouble for La Medida. They listened to us and invested the time needed to really understand our needs. We have a beautiful, light kitchen as the focal point of our home and we can’t fault the overall experience”.

A stay in a boutique hotel means relaxing in luxury, with the softest bedding, chic furniture, impeccable décor and a lavish lavatory. But why leave all that indulgence behind, when you could have a boutique-inspired bathroom all of your own back at home?
Interior designer Lisa Melvin recently completed a project that she calls the Wellness Suite. This stunning bathroom would fit in perfectly in a high-end hotel in Mayfair or Kensington, and it’s also marvellous inspiration for anyone looking to create a modern, stylish and functional bathroom.
Her vision for the decadent room was “to create a space based on design rather than products”. The result was a high-end bathroom that is luxurious, easy to keep clean and a joy to be inside. Although the Wellness Suite incorporated some of the very best products on the market, featuring modern materials and technology, Lisa notes that the results could be easily scaled to suit other budgets and spaces. “It’s a room that could, potentially, be in anybody’s property” she explains.
For example, the room includes a Neorest AC Washlet. Priced at £12,000, this top-of-the-line washlet from Japanese manufacturer TOTO boasts not only the most expensive washlet in the world, but also the only washlet on the planet that has a self-clean function. However, other models are available, hitting all price points down to £1,000, so the setting could be scaled back to meet tighter budgets.
On the other hand, additional features could be incorporated to bump up the luxury factor even more.
“A heated Sanoasa lounger from wedi – like the type you find in spas – would be a wonderful addition to a more spacious bathroom,” she says.
The Washlet is something of a centrepiece of the room. This high-tech shower toilet has a sensor-activated lid that opens and closes by itself, an automatic flush and an adjustable dryer. There’s a wand-jet system that uses warm water for personal cleansing, while a heated seat and deodoriser help to ensure a pleasant trip to the toilet every time. The Washlet even cleans itself. An integrated UV light interacts with the special zirconium coating on the bowl; this triggers a photocatalytic process that breaks down organic substances and helps to ensure the bathroom is always hygienic.
Lisa also used a sink and bath manufactured by TOTO to complement the decanted throne and create a consistent aesthetic. Another benefit to these TOTO products is that the resin used to make them is translucent, “so you can have this beautiful glow coming through it. It’s not only durable – it’s also really beautiful,” Lisa says.
Dekton is a large-format surface material that is traditionally used for kitchen worktops, and it’s ideal for bathroom surfaces as well. Since it comes in a huge range of colours and finishes, it can also match any design scheme with ease. Another benefit of Dekton is that it creates a – literally – seamless appearance. Lisa explains, “We moves away from tiles by using Dekton. This eliminated grout lines, which can be the cause of potential leaks.” Grout lines can also become soiled and discoloured over time, even with a rigorous cleaning regime in place.
“Using Dekton as wall cladding is a very slick way of applying the material beyond its traditional purpose. Aesthetically, it’s very pleasing, and it retains its good looks for the long term,” Lisa adds.
Large-format tiles were used for the flooring in the Wellness Suite but since each one measures 1200mm square, grout lines were kept to a minimum. In the few places where a joint was required, Lisa opted for an epoxy grout that’s practically invisible. Once it’s set it’s more like an acrylic – non-porous, smooth and very hard – so it easily resists dirt and grease.
Lisa loves to create hidden spaces within her designs. While the Wellness Suite might look like it has no storage at all, it actually has lots.
“In this room, we’ve created two large secret storage spaces that you wouldn’t know were there unless they were pointed out to you,” she says.
Three large mirrors stretch from floor to ceiling. They lift the room, making it look brighter and bigger – and thanks to concealed hinges, one of them swings open to reveal an enormous hidden cupboard with glass shelving and LED lights.
She has also hidden a large drawer under the bath surround, perfect for storing towels, spare loo rolls and extra bottles of shampoo. Bespoke floating cubes finished in matching smoked mirror adds both function and dimension to the room. A neat, subtly lit library niche housing your latest reading material is a winning combination when teamed with the TOTO Neorest AC Washlet’s heated seat.
Paying attention to the smallest details is essential in creating a decadent bathroom, and recent innovations have led to a seemingly endless range of choice. When it comes to taps and ironmongery, homeowners are no longer limited to chrome or brass finishes. Hansgrohe’s Axor FinishPlus range of taps and bath fillers comes in 15 different polished or brushed finishes including black, bronze, stainless steel and two shades of gold. “It’s all about the detail,” Lisa adds. “Ordinarily, taps and showers are brass with a chrome finish. But metallic like gold, bronze copper and brass are becoming more and more popular in interiors, and with the Axor range, you get a choice of what colour your taps are coated with.”
In the Wellness Suite, Lisa opted for an Axor Uno² wall-mounted tap and a Massaud bath filler in brushed nickel.
“The beauty of being able to choose from so many colours means you can really fine-tune the overall look you’re trying to create,” she says.
“The room has a moody, glamorous and luxurious feel, with the Dekton surfacing in black and dark brown, oversized mirrors and a Japanese-style theme to the window. The brushed nickel finish on the ironmongery completes the look and helps this already dramatic room make an even stronger statement.”
No matter how beautiful a bathroom is, it also needs to be comfortable – nobody likes the feeling of a cold floor on bare feet first thing in the morning. So Lisa has included an electric underfloor heating system. This is a secondary heating source, specifically to take the chill off the floor – and since it’s connected to a timer/thermostat, cold tiles are a thing of the past. The main heating is supplied by an Aeon radiator. Made of black granite, it looks more like a piece of art than a radiator. Plus, the stainless-steel towel bars ensure your towels are always warm and dry quickly – saving on laundry too.
In every interior, lighting is key, as it sets the mood and ensures the space is functional as well as good looking. The TOTO bathroom includes a combination of mood, ambient and task lighting, so users can set the scene as required – whether you want to jump out of bed and quickly get ready for work, or you want a soft glow for a lovely long soak at the end of a hard day. As mentioned before, the TOTO sink and bath are made of a translucent resin material and they incorporate LED lights that can be adjusted from a bright light to a soft glow, perfect for a relaxing bath.
“Homeowners could also consider using RGB LEDs, which can be charged to any colour, depending on the atmosphere they wish to create,” Lisa adds.
A set of glazed pocket doors slide open to reveal the shower room, which features an Axor Shower Heaven. This large overhead shower measures 1200 by 302mm and incorporates built-in lighting. It can be adjusted to provide three different spray patterns: RainAir (rain jet entrenched with air), mono and powder rain. The three options can be used individually or in combination, and can also be aimed at different spray zones.

Among our Houston outdoor kitchens, this one is unique because of its concrete countertops, pergola with stucco wrapping and custom storage.
"It's not one of our biggest covered outdoor kitchens in Houston," says Outdoor Homescapes of Houston owner Wayne Franks. "But it's unique, and it looks really nice, too!"
The client, a young family, wanted an outdoor kitchen with a more minimalistic, modern look, explains Outdoor Homescapes senior designer Lisha Maxey.
"They're both doctors and very much attuned to detail," she says. "Their primary goal was to create a space where they could lounge while the children played as well as an area to entertain family and friends while cooking and dining outside."
Like a growing number of people wanting small outdoor kitchens in Houston, this client expressed interest in using concrete as a surface material: "The look is contemporary and is easily paired with any type of outdoor furniture," says Maxey, "from wicker to teak to iron."
Here's a closeup of the concrete countertops. You'll notice that they're glossy and smooth like glass, thanks to special sealers and a topcoat of UV-resistant resin that prevents the countertop from yellowing.
Since these particular clients lean toward the minimalistic side of contemporary design, she continues, "the standard granite countertop of many Houston outdoor kitchens would not work, since it typically has a lot of movement and can be busy."
Lisha sees the use of concrete as a growing outdoor design trend for Houston outdoor kitchens: "It's easy to maintain and again, leans towards a more modern look for outdoor."
All the furniture and lighting is from Restoration Hardware, says Lisha, who's offering $500 in free outdoor furniture consultation services as a special promotion. (Interested? Just contact us!)
The dining and lounge chairs are from the Antibes collection in cast aluminum with a bronze finish. The table is a Belgian Trestle made of weathered concrete and teak. Simple track lighting was used on the pergola in keeping with the minimalist look of the space.
The pergola is a treated pine, stained a Minwax Jacobean, which appears almost black. "This client chose a pergola over a roof extension off the house because they wanted it to still seem light and airy in their outdoor space for their young children," explains Lisha. "They wanted a certain degree of sun and shade protection, which a pergola does provide, but they wanted it to seem a bit like a park for the kids to play in."
"The seating/storage bin was not a part of the original design," says Lisha. "As the project progressed, the client expressed interest in some sort of chest for the new outdoor furniture cushions to be stored in."
The design for the storage bin was developed to accommodate this request: "It eventually evolved into a seating area as well. And to keep the look consistent with the new kitchen, it was agreed that the stone be carried through the design. The wood top was necessary so we could design a hinged access for storage."

When an interior designer sets about designing their own dream kitchen, inspiration may come easy, but it’s their expert knowledge about what materials and finishes that will work best that really ensures a good outcome. This was certainly the case for Lisa Hensby of LH Interiors, who didn’t hesitate in choosing CRL Quartz Calacatta to play a key role in the heart of her home.
The overall goal was to create a kitchen/diner that was light and airy, a place where friends and family can enjoy each other’s company. Large, practical eating areas within the design of both the island and dining table space are central to the design, while transforming the previously dark and cold room into a space filled with natural light and warmth was key. As a family of five, with young children in the mix, it was essential to achieve the right balance of creative and beautiful, as befits the home of an interior designer, with practical and functional elements too. Lisa comments: “I was conscious that I didn’t want to be precious or conscious when enjoying the space. It had to be something that was easy to use and maintain as well as looking visually stunning.”
Material choice was important here, with Calacatta being an ideal solution with no need for compromise. “Calacatta is a timeless stone that will never date,” explains Lisa. “Its clean sleek look creates the wow factor, but is also super practical. With three children, the surface not only looks incredible, with a modern feel, but it is extremely hard wearing and practical too.
“Stains are easily removed and the surfaces become shiny with one sweep of a cloth.”
The bold marble-inspired patterning of Calacatta makes a visually striking effect clad on one wall, with the material also chosen for the work surfaces, combining brilliantly with other materials including porcelain floor tiles, a faux leather booth seating area, acrylic and glass.
“Texture is key in all my designs, it’s a great way to create accents and makes a room pop,” comments Lisa.
As any interior designer will know, keeping to a strict timescale for the new kitchen was paramount, with family life happening around the project. As Lisa explains, installation of the surfaces was timely and hassle-free and her vision of what the finished detail should look like was met. “The installation process was extremely easy with Stewkley Stone, their attention to detail was incredible,” she says.
“I was clear that I expected the veins to match with the bookends and joins of cladding. The team were extremely helpful and ensured that they stuck to my design brief. Their talented craftsmanship is clear with the outcome of the finished product and how stunning it looks.”
It’s this attention to detail that really makes the kitchen special. Like the champagne troughs added to the design of the island to create extra entertaining spaces, designed to be in line with the integrated extractor fan, which works beautifully. Faux leather was added to the plinths and borders of the cupboards to bring extra texture to the kitchen area, tying into the booth seating area, and LED lighting adds a cool, modern aesthetic to the space.
“The room is exactly how I designed it, the heart of the home,” says Lisa. “The kitchen itself has gloss units so little ones’ hand prints make sweet memories instead of cleaning worries. The island is a central point to chat, cook and enjoy watching the children through the glass bifold doors playing in the playground. The boothed area is perfect for watching the chef cook up a storm, relaxing, eating and enjoying each other’s company.
The design brief for this project was to create a light, modern and practical space, with clean lines, timeless colours, somewhere to make memories but an area that still had a wow factor. Is Lisa happy with the outcome? “The kitchen/diner area is our favourite place to be in our home, it suits our life in every single way,” she confirms.
“My favourite element of the kitchen is the island. It is the ideal spot to chat, do homework with the kids, unwind from a busy day, entertain, watch the children playing outside and have everyone at the same eye level. It is the main preparation area of the rest of the kitchen but also a place where you can sit and feel part of the action.
“We’re a busy family that always makes time to chat about our day in the most beautiful, practical space.”

Located in an enviable position within arm’s reach of a beach pier, the refurbishment of Coastal Beach House references the home’s coastal context and pays homage to it’s mid-century bones. “Our client’s brief sought to rejuvenate the double storey residence, whilst maintaining the existing building footprint”, explains Sarah Cosentino, director of Studio Esteta.
As the orientation of the original dwelling already maximized the coastal aspect, the client engaged Studio Esteta to tailor the spatial arrangement to better accommodate their love for entertaining with minor modifications.
“In response, our design seeks to be in synergy with the mid-century character that presented, emphasizing its stylistic significance to create a light-filled, serene and relaxed interior that feels wholly connected to the adjacent bay”, Sarah explains.
The client’s deep appreciation of the mid-century design aesthetic also called for original details to be preserved or used as reference points in the refurbishment. Items such as the unique wall hooks were repurposed and a light, tactile palette of natural materials was adopted. The neutral backdrop allowed space for the client’s extensive collection of art and ceramics and avoided distracting from the coastal views.

Cantoni Atlanta
One can say that the redesign job on this Atlanta-area home was just what the doctor ordered, since physician Jim Linnane chose Cantoni designer Kohl Sudnikovich to help him re-imagine his 50s ranch-style residence.
Online browsing, and a fondness for modern design, led the medical professional into our Georgia store/" title="Cantoni Modern Furniture Stores" class="crosslinking">showroom after purchasing the 50s-built home in early 2011. Since then, walls were torn down, the kitchen got a facelift, a lone loft morphed in to a music room, and the fireplace got haute while the pool became cool.
As always, step one of the design process began with Kohl visiting the home to measure and scale-out floor plans. Next, ideas were tossed around and the client fell in love with the Mondrian sectional, in red. “Jim’s selection set the color scheme for the home’s living areas,” explains Kohl, “and he loves the punchy accents we added with art, both inside and out.”
“Kohl worked closely with me, from start to finish, and guided me through the entire process,” explains Jim. “He helped me find a great contractor, and I’m particularly fond of the plan he conceived to replace the dated fireplace with a more contemporary linear gas box set in striated limestone.”
Adds Kohl, “I love how we opened the loft and staircase walls by replacing them with metal and cable railings, and how we created a sitting area (in what was the dining room) to open to the living room we enhanced with mirrors.”
A creative fix, like re-facing the cabinets, drawers and door panels in the kitchen, illustrates how something simple (and not too pricey) can make a big impact.
The project, on a whole, is also a good example of how our full-service design studio and talented staff can help re-imagine and optimize your living space while working within your budget.
“Meeting and working with Kohl was such a great experience,” says Jim, in closing. “He is so talented. He came up with great design ideas to completely change the look of my home’s interior, and I think the results are amazing.” Guess what, Jim? We think the results of your collaboration with Kohl are pretty amazing, too.

CRL Stone
When Melanie Leakey began thinking of what her dream kitchen would look like, bringing nature indoors and capturing the essence of shinrin-yoku – the Japanese art of forest bathing – was a priority. One of the newest additions to the CRL Quartz collection, Cristallo Azure, helped the team from Milestone Ecodesign fulfil the quite specific brief.
The quartz surface, teamed with green paint for a feature wall, bamboo flooring and stone-effect Eco2 cabinets, helps transform the wrap-around extension on the back of a 1960s semi-detached house in the suburbs of Bradford into a zen-like space. “I wanted a really natural look and felt the azure blue would mimic a lake next to the trees, and it worked perfectly,” explains Melanie.

Installed by Select Solid Surfaces in Keighley, Cristallo Azure makes a stunning visual impression, while the durability of the quartz material ensures it will stay looking beautiful with minimal maintenance. The striking intensity of the sea-green colour makes it the perfect choice for this project, where it contrasts so well with the nature-inspired décor around it. “Everyone has either worktops on the black/white/grey spectrum or beige – we wanted to be a little different!” Melanie admits.
Entering the newly created space from the existing house, the dining area accommodates a large glass-top table and seating, with bi-fold doors beyond leading out to the patio. To the right of the dining area lies the kitchen, with a long bank of tall units for storage on the rear wall and a kitchen island as a centrepiece. Complete with hob, sink and bar stools and topped with Cristallo Azure surfaces it is this furniture that turns the room into the multi-functional space Melanie was hoping for.
“The new kitchen looks out onto our south-facing garden, so we wanted to have a kitchen island that incorporated the hob and sink so we could make the most of the views,” emphasises Melanie. “I also think it’s rude to talk to someone with your back to them because you’re stirring something on the hob!”
“We wanted a really social space where we could entertain guests without having to excuse yourself because you need to focus on making a meal, so wanted a couple of bar stools for the island so guests/family could take a seat and talk to the chef whilst they make dinner.” CRL Quartz is the ideal surface for such a multi-functional kitchen area. A practical alternative to natural materials yet with all the beauty that the marble look brings to the kitchen, engineered quartz stone such as Cristallo Azure is scratch, heat and stain resistant and never needs to be sealed.
“The island is one of the aspects we are most pleased with. It does exactly what we wanted it to do, and it looks fabulous whilst it does it.”
The chosen décor is a brave step away from the often-seen neutral tones of modern kitchen design, but there’s no doubt that the finished space is everything that Melanie and her family hoped for from the new space. As she concludes: “I think it is a combination of the use of natural materials and colours that work so harmoniously together, plus the fact that the kitchen is designed around the home chef – everything you need is either straight in front of you or only a few steps away. Plus, the use of the cabinets means everything can be tidied away leaving us with a clean, streamlined kitchen.”
