While renovating the master bedroom last year, the Mohrmans replaced the fireplace surround with white ceramic tile. Placed in a herringbone pattern, the tile and dark grout work together to lend a period feel to the room. As with many renovations, there were some surprises along the way. "From what we could tell the mantle had never been removed", Chelsea explains. "We removed the mantle and found bits and pieces of photos, ticket stubs, coins, etc that had fallen back there over the years. Some of the items were dated back to the 1930’s." Being the eighth owners of the home, it was hard to tell whether there was something there from every previous owner, "... but we gathered it all, placed it in a tin, added our own piece, and placed it back inside the mantle as a time capsule for future owners to find in decades to come."

"Creating a dramatic set of stairs without cumbersome framing" is what Franklin considers the greatest dilemma during the design process. Connecting three stories, he came up with a plan of opposing staircases that creates dynamic space rather than obscure it. Although massive in its footprint, the stair design retains the open-air feeling of the home without compromising strength. Without posts and framework to support them, the staircases seemingly float in the space. "The combination of steel stringers and rails, along with the hardwood steps," Franklin explains, "created enough strength for each set of stairs to, literally, be anchored by only four bolts." The peaked main wall, painted in a dark gray lends understated drama to a decidedly masculine room, and acts as a beautiful backdrop for a Robert Kingston painting. Custom designed, extra long sofa flanked by period-perfect sconces, comfortable swivel chair, and leather bench. A vintage game table, also gets plenty of use. Surrounding walls, painted in lighter gray complement the custom woven tan, indigo and rust-colored Navajo rug.

Jennifer goes on to explain, "When I decorate my home I don't feel I have a style. I believe what ever you put in your home is what you should love, and that way it creates its own style ... I've been collecting for so long that a lot of my treasures have come together because I love them and eventually it will all make sense. I don't like one 'way'; that's why all my rooms are different." The dining table was found in an old flower shop. Originally it was a worktable with very tall legs, so Raymond and Jennifer cut them down to modify it for its current use. The chairs received Jennifer's creative touch as well. Purchased at a garage sale for $1 each, they are originally from an ice cream parlor in the basement of the historical Higbee's Company department store.
