Wanting to create an oasis in the city, our clients needed this garden to be lush and vibrant for their high-rise office space in Midtown, Manhattan. The garden needed to function as an area where clients and employees could hold meetings, have lunch, host after work functions or just take a relaxing break during work. The evergreen shrubs and grasses give those working inside their privacy while the tall trees provide shade for the terrace that is in full sun most of the day. We used a mix of drought-tolerant plants as well as annuals to create a look that is full and at the same time low maintenance. Photo: Lori Cannava

The backyard was a challenge because of a dramatic grade change. The owner wanted privacy and a patio with a firepit. The exposure to wind and afternoon hot sun is also an issue. Because of the grade change, a small knee wall had to be built to hold up the side area.

July 2017 After the hardest winter in decades, and a spring arriving at least one month late, the lavender and roses are now blooming, and the garden has filled in. The full garden means less weeding and watering as the soil is not exposed to flying weed seeds and sun exposure.

This backyard used to be just plain, boring grass. Now it's a beautiful, low water garden with a space for night time entertaining around an eco-friendly fire pit. The fire pit runs on bio-ethanol which is very clean burning. Plants attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Here we create a quiet destination garden around a pergola. The grape vines create a cool shady area where you can relax in the hammock and enjoy a book and a cool beverage.
