DW's mission was to re-imagine the 1970's solid block home into a modern and open place for a family of three. The house initially was very compartmentalized including lots of small rooms and too many doors to count. With a mantra of simplify, simplify, simplify, Architect CP Drewett began to look for the hidden order to craft a space that lived well. This residence is a Moroccan world of white topped with classic Morrish patterning and finished with the owner's fabulous taste. The kitchen was established as the home's center to facilitate the owner's heart and swagger for entertaining. The public spaces were reimagined with a focus on hospitality. Practicing great restraint with the architecture set the stage for the owner to showcase objects in space. Her fantastic collection includes a glass-top faux elephant tusk table from the set of the infamous 80's television series, Dallas. As an artist, Claude Monet used his eye to design his fabulous home in Giverny, France. Choosing hand made blue and white tiles from a tile manufacturer in Rouen, France - he succeeded in inspiring the design world for the past century. Blue and white glazed porcelain and ceramic tiles were brought to Europe from China via the French East India Company beginning in 1664. France was one of the first countries to unlock the Chinese secrets of fabricating their hard paste porcelain - and Rouen was an established center of this artistic endeavor. Of course Monet would only have the best when it came to his home - and purchasing tiles in Rouen was without question. Perhaps understood as well by Monet, is that blue is the color of the mind - it is soothing to the soul and stimulates clear thought. We paired these fabulous custom made Cassie chairs, wrapped in a velvet snakeskin pattern with chrome nail heads, with a traditional rustic dining table.

Into all of this, our cement floor tiles in our Cluny pattern fit in perfectly with their crisp black and white palette Doherty selected for the room and serve as a strong counterpoint to the white subway tiles that line the walls. It also provides a bit of softness to the space with its more curvilinear design, offsetting some of the harder edges found. After their major living room and dining room renovation, the clients next tackled the open plan kitchen and family room - an awkward long narrow space with unusual wall angles and fabulous east facing ocean views . She is a gourmet cook who dreamed a of French Country kitchen. Working with her photo collection, I provided a concept sketch to the custom cabinet maker, giving him a clear idea of the style she was after. We designed a built-in storage unit for dishes, serving pieces and glassware that looks like an old world hutch.
