Located in the outskirts of Alajuela, Coyol is a humid weather area full of lush green land-scapes and stunning views. The clients were looking for a house able to integrate public areas, front, and backyard within one single space. Twix House is conceptualized by two main curved dynamic shapes, which create one whole. Two twin L-shaped volumes are looking to opposite sides: sunrise facade and sunset facade, resulting in an S-shaped form of the entire house. Both contain the main and secondary bedrooms of the house, giving them unique views of the Central Valley mountains.
The main access entrance opens onto a double height lobby, crossed by the bridge in the center, and a curved staircase to the left. The main public area has a double height space, which is an open plan, containing the living room, dining room, and a kitchen. These spaces are connected by slid-ing doors that lead to the terrace, becoming a key element of the house, transforming the social areas and allowing for direct communication between indoor and outdoor spaces. The private areas of the house are located on the second floor: two bedrooms and a second living room. These are connected by a third volume, which is an interior bridge, articulating the house and integrating all the downstairs and upstairs areas together.
Due to the particularities of the climate zone, a special attention had to be paid to ensuring that the house remains fresh. Therefore, as a part of the process, different passive design strategies for tropical climate areas were implemented. For instance, the roof of the bridge overlaps the rest of the roof creating a gap, which acts as a monitor letting the hot air leave. Apart from that, the orientation of the building allows for cross ventilation to take place, resulting in cool and refreshing temperatures in-doors, despite the daily tropical heat.

Today’s investment landscape in California features a surge in transforming single-family lots into vibrant multi-family residences, facilitated by recent SB9 and ADU laws. This project exemplifies how a modest 6,750-square-foot lot can accommodate a 1,500-square-foot primary home alongside a 2,500-square-foot duplex, seamlessly integrating design, functionality, and neighborhood aesthetics.
The primary residence underwent a meticulous interior transformation, evolving from a 3-bedroom, 1.5-bath layout into a spacious 4-bedroom, 2-bath home. Strategic reconfigurations centered around creating an expansive great room—an open-concept space adorned with vaulted ceilings—where the kitchen, dining, and living areas converge into a magnificent communal zone.
Exterior updates further distinguish the property. The front and side yards are enclosed with fencing and privacy hedges, linked by concrete pathways that enhance outdoor functionality while compensating for backyard space lost during renovations. The exterior façade was refreshed with darker tones, deliberately contrasting with the duplex to emphasize architectural separation.
Designed to preserve the suburban charm, the duplex visually mimics a single-family home from the street. Its facade creates an illusion of a two-story residence, maintaining harmony within the neighborhood fabric. The main unit, developed under SB9 guidelines, features three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a luxurious parents’ suite situated upstairs. Downstairs, two bedrooms share a full bath, creating a balanced family-oriented layout.
The duplex’s interior boasts 9-foot ceilings throughout, elevating the sense of space and openness. The design thoughtfully places the kitchen at the front, inviting guests into the home, while stairs on the right lead to the private upstairs bedroom suite.
The ADU offers a two bedroom and two & half baths. the unit is accessible via a private side entrance with a dedicated walkway. Its layout includes a ground-floor living room, a galley kitchen, and a discreet powder room beneath the stairs, designed to contain guest traffic and maintain privacy upstairs. The upstairs bedrooms each feature luxurious bathrooms with expansive showers, adding an element of modern elegance.
Both units enjoy thoughtfully landscaped outdoor spaces—private patios, backyard areas, and gated front yards—creating welcoming environments for residents and visitors alike.
This project exemplifies innovative urban infill solutions, blending architectural elegance with legal compliance and community harmony—an inspiring blueprint for the future of residential development in California.

Dwellist had the honor of collaborating with Shaafi, a Netherlands resident, to bring his vision to life – the construction of his dream house in the idyllic town of Uthamapalyam, near Theni. With a deep-rooted passion for creating a haven that would cater to his aging parents' needs, as well as provide a rental unit and ample space for his own family and his brother. Shaafi entrusted our skilled team to design a residence that would surpass all expectations.
Shaafi's utmost concern was the well-being and mobility of his parents within the house. Our team prioritized their needs by incorporating thoughtful features for convenience and accessibility. The design also called for a spacious 3 BHK unit to accommodate both Shaafi's and his brother's families. Considering Shaafi's occasional visits to Uthamapalyam (2 to 3 months per year), we also addressed his desire for rental units on the first floor.
The primary focus of our team was on creating a ground-floor residence that prioritized accessibility for elderly. We incorporated barrier-free pathways, spacious doorways, and various amenities to enhance their comfort. Additionally, we designed a rental unit on the first floor, ensuring privacy and independence for tenants while promoting harmonious coexistence with the main residents. The unit was meticulously planned to ensure essential amenities, optimal functionality, and a focus on aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. Natural lighting, efficient ventilation systems, and energy-saving features were integrated to enhance the living experience while minimizing environmental impact.
We are proud to have worked closely with Shaafi in creating a home that reflects his values and aspirations. Please feel free to contact Dwellist for further details about the project.

Several phases of renovations by Morpurgo Architects transformed this once concrete block ranch, coated in pool-paint blue, from a traditional rectangular box to a soaring, contemporary redwood home.
We created new facades with light filled rooms and flowing outdoor spaces. The curve of the deck is defined by the nearby dogwoods and lilacs that were undisturbed during the building process and, along with other plantings, connect the family with the outdoors.
The existing garage roof became the foundation for a two-story living space with a loft that reaches into the treetops. The renovations transformed the building into a cohesive and dramatic whole.

A feature wall can create a dramatic focal point in any room. Some of our favorites happen to be ship-lap. It's truly amazing when you work with clients that let us transform their home from stunning to spectacular. The reveal for this project was ship-lap walls within a wine, dining room, and a fireplace facade. Feature walls can be a powerful way to modify your space.

Built in 1949, this Edina home had a strong horizontal presence on the site, but through subsequent renovations the overall massing was lacking clarity and refinement and the entry was diminutive and uninviting. The roof and siding materials were aging, and important interior spaces were cramped and closed in. The house needed better light, better connection internally and out, and exterior updates to clarify and enhance the strengths of the home.
The primary design evolved out of a celebration of the existing horizontality of the home and a recognition that a bigger home was not needed. By layering materiality and color, a new identity was created. A new cedar entry canopy slips out from under the previous roof line, extending further towards the street. This added warmth at the entry is echoed along the facade, creating a graceful rhythm and texture. The previous additions were re-clad with a darker material palette in order to anchor and unify the ends of the home. As the grade slopes down towards the back yard, horizontal bands are exposed, revealing the layering top to bottom. Combined, these few shifts in color and materiality allowed for a complete transformation of the home.
The interior is reflective of the material and color palette used outside. The main living spaces are opened up and connected while strengthening the original symmetry of the more formal linear alignment of rooms. A whole new kitchen relocates the center of the home and makes more fluid the daily life of this young family. The house is fully transformed inside and out, all without adding more square feet.
