Our introduction to the Tahoe site was in late winter, on a clear sunny day with filtered light and long shadows through snow-laden fir and pine bows. It made a strong impression, stored for future consideration but the impetus for the design came soon after the spring snow melt. A powerful sense of horizontal layering of vegetation and various stages of decomposing downed timber on the two-acre site, juxtaposed with pine and fir trees and the dense canopy of the surrounding forest. The site is located near the historic 1960 Olympic Nordic track, situated on the edge of wetlands and seasonal streams. The homeowners were previous clients and dreamt of having a retreat in the Sierras away from their home base in Berkeley, CA. Among skiers, bike riders, hikers, and boaters, they found the ideal central location for their home base near Lake Tahoe. The home is organized as a series of linked spaces, each providing a unique sensory experience and connection to different parts of the site, both vertically and horizontally. The design includes extensive use of glass to create a true indoor/outdoor connection and maximize natural light. At the center of the site are two large fir trees, which the building respectfully wraps around in an L shape to create a focal point in the landscaped courtyard. A refined, context-driven palette of natural materials including cedar, oak, fir, and steel is used to harmoniously blend in among the surroundings. The construction includes advanced details such as thermally broken steel beams supporting layered roof planes engineered to hold snow rather than shed it. Designed to resist significant load, we exposed the steel structure as a recurring element in the interior spaces. The resulting columns and support beams contribute to the familiar design aspects of each room and provide a better understanding of how the building was constructed. The second floor features cantilevered volumes that reach out into the nearby evergreen limbs, likening the experience to being in a tree house. The house incorporates features such as radiant heating, solar panels, and operable windows for passive cooling. Fire safety measures include the use of naturally fire-resistant materials, a Class A roof construction, sprinklers, and drought-tolerant landscaping beyond the defensible space.

Chimney Flashing Chimney flashing plays a vital role to the protection of your home. It’s the piece of material that protects where chimney protrude out of the roof. To prevent water leaks and damage, the technician will inspect for any loose, missing, cracked or damaged flashing. Brick & Mortar Joints This is key. To prevent any type of major repairs, take care of minor repairs now. The technician will check for loose, cracked or spalling (chipped) bricks. If there are loose bricks and numerous cracks and chips, we’ll inspect further for any type of water leaks or water damage problems. Chimney Crown The concrete slab on top of the chimney is the chimney crown. It serves a very important purpose. The concrete slab acts like your chimney’s own personal roof. The technician will check if there are cracks, loose or missing pieces from the crown. Chimney Cap Chimney caps are also a critical component of the chimney - Every chimney needs a chimney cap for the same reasons every home needs a roof! It covers the opening of the flue. It prevents animals, debris and water from entering the chimney. The material of a chimney cap is usually made of stainless steel, as it will not rust. How do you make an impact within a familiar project typology? For our first cafe for Spro Coffee Lab, and their flagship location, we combined a long-held vision of a cafe with a faceted ceiling, their red & white material palette, and the building owner’s desire for an iconic street presence into a unified, minimalist language of angles and facets that extends throughout the cafe. Overhead, a faceted soffit juts out dramatically over the service bar, the two objects mirroring each other’s footprints and satisfying Health Code requirements for a smooth, cleanable surface overhead. Concealing an egress corridor above that bisects the space, the soffit presents a bold visual gesture through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of this corner space, beckoning passersby inside. The service bar points toward the entry, with a minimalist espresso-tap system as the focal point, and angled sections branching off in both directions to create seating and service areas and direct customer flow. Throughout the space, surfaces customers interact with are clad in chocolate-colored cork, providing a highly textured, tactile contrast to the smooth, white primary materials and complementing the bronze window system, red logos, and customer seating. The unfinished cork is durable and stain-resistant, resilient to the touch, provides acoustic dampening, and is highly sustainable. The result is a cafe that goes far beyond the project brief, creating a memorable experience and an iconic presence for the brand.

Now this is David and Kim’s favorite part of the kitchen design. “Seating room in the kitchen has made meal times with a three-year-old easier, especially in the morning. Also, cabinets placed at the height of the space means we have more storage than we can even use at this point,” she says. Notably, the cabinetry was installed by their contractor and even included an IKEA design hack to accommodate the space. “We had our contractor make a drawer below the sink for the garbage so that the garbage drawer didn’t take up any potential storage space,” David says. “Overall it was an easy experience as he was already familiar with the project and he had a lot of experience with IKEA kitchens,” he concludes.
