What once was a small, narrow kitchen is now a light, open space that accommodates the active family. A dining room wall was moved back to allow for two deep pantry cabinets. Two new windows were installed to breathe more light into the space. A mix of finishes give this kitchen a jewel box like feel, in the textured mix of backsplashes, the gold accents on the kitchen hardware and lighting, and the oil rubbed bronze on the plumbing fixtures. The beautiful Macaubus Quartzite is a work of art in the space.

This two-toned kitchen was designed by Paula Greer, CKD of Bilotta Kitchens with Robin Zahn of Robin Prince Zahn Architecture. The u-shaped space has perimeter cabinets in Bilotta’s own line, the Bilotta Collection in a custom gray paint. The island is Wood-Mode Cabinetry in cherry with a stain. Countertops are Caesarstone’s London Grey with a built-in walnut cutting board on one corner of the island from Brooks Custom. The custom Madison Hood by Rangecraft is in a Dark Antique Steel finish and extends up accentuating the high ceiling above the cooking triangle. Two of the most interesting elements of this space are the banquette area and the coffered ceilings. By far, the most frequent installation of banquettes is tucking them into a corner of the room, regardless of how much seating is available at the island. In this kitchen, the island provides enough space for four to five stools. But because the space is separated from the rest of the house, the client wanted to ensure there was sufficient seating for their frequent entertaining. Also, the house is situated in a secluded wooded area; the new kitchen includes an abundance of unobstructed windows to fully experience the beautiful outdoor surroundings. The corner banquette (under more windows!) makes it feel like you’re dining in the trees. The bonus feature is that there’s extra storage below for table linens or seldom-used serving pieces. This really functions like a couch, complete with throw pillows and a TV, where the empty-nesters love spending time even when it isn’t mealtime. As for the ceiling, coffers don’t necessarily have to be large and intricately detailed with layers of moldings in order to be effective. This kitchen features two different ceiling heights: a small section of an addition contains a vaulted ceiling, while the larger island and eating area are tucked under a 2nd floor balcony and bedrooms. The client wanted to distinguish the lower area from the vaulted section, but in a subtle manner. The architect chose to implement shallow coffers with minimal trim for a softer result. The geometric pattern also reflects the floor tile and other lines within the room. The most interesting aspect, though, is that the vaulted area is actually concealed from view when you’re standing in the breakfast area; but as you approach the sink and window, the ceiling explodes above you for a visual surprise. And lastly, of course during this time of “work from home” the desk tucked in a nook opposite the banquette creates the perfect space for Zoom meetings, email checking and just the day-to-day activities we used to go into the office to do. Dining Room in West Trail Drive | Moody Modern Home in Scottsdale, AZ | Room Type: Full home remodel and furnishings | Project Name: West Trail Drive Residence | Key Feature: A moody, modern aesthetic built from the ground up through renovation and furnishings, where every finish, fixture, and piece of furniture was selected to work as a cohesive whole rather than a collection of separate decisions. Challenge: The home had good bones but felt generic. The clients wanted something that reflected a specific point of view, not a safe Scottsdale palette. The risk with moody, dark interiors is that they can feel heavy or disconnected if the layering isn't right. Update to a 1966 Kitchen in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, California. In the original floorplan, a peninsula off the sink wall divided the space in half making it feel and look smaller and posing a challenge for gathering in the space. We removed the peninsula to create space for a small work island with a wood topped extension for casual dining. The kitchen is now zoned for specific work tasks and activities. Other updates to the home included adding a Barn Door to the dining room, refacing the fireplace and adding bookshelves, and redesigning the staircase.

With a new baby on the way, this new young couple bought a fixer upper in Castro Valley. The couple really envisioned a peaceful, open, modern oasis that withstands the rigors of an active new child, along with a dog and cats. Every surface of this house was touched. Everything old was replaced with new surfaces and finishes. We created a focal point with function by using a dramatic wall color and wall of shelving. Using a soothing color palette that calls to mind the natural surroundings we achieved the tranquil vibe they were looking for. Yoko used clean multifunctional furniture to create zones and provide welcoming spaces for family and friends, while the warm light wood floors that expand throughout the home make it still feel cohesive. We can’t wait for this new family to make many memories in this beautiful space.

This room is a comfortable yet active family room. The chenille draperies with silk jabots frame the large bay windows. The linen chairs and decorative pillows add a range of color while the coffered ceiling and chandeliers bring a comforting feeling to the space.

Doric Columns, hardwood floors and plantation shutters give this dining room a warm and cozy feeling. Framing projector lights, not visible in this photo, strategically highlight oil paintings on the walls of both the dining and great room. An unusual, 3/4 life size, bronze statue of two ballerinas supports the glass dinning room table top. A Lutron Radio RA lighting control system allows the setting of multiple, activity specific, lighting scenes. The goal of this extensive remodel was to bring a home that was distinctly 80s into the present. Our clients were an active family with three rambunctious, growing boys. Durability and practicality were high priorities. The homeowners wanted to create a space where both adults and children were at home, and that included feminine touches for Mom. We knew they’d need storage and space to play, so we transformed the formal dining room into a dedicated playroom with plenty of built-ins for toys, puzzles, books, and board games. We took two impractical spaces and removed the center wall, creating a bunk room that feels fort-like and imaginative. For the parents, we created a haven in their primary suite with a proper sitting area surrounding a fireplace as well as a shower/bath wet room. New front doors and window treatments were installed to enhance the natural light and complement the much-improved aesthetic.

This renovation and addition project, located in Bloomfield Hills, was completed in 2016. A master suite, located on the second floor and overlooking the backyard, was created that featured a his and hers bathroom, staging rooms, separate walk-in-closets, and a vaulted skylight in the hallways. The kitchen was stripped down and opened up to allow for gathering and prep work. Fully-custom cabinetry and a statement range help this room feel one-of-a-kind. To allow for family activities, an indoor gymnasium was created that can be used for basketball, soccer, and indoor hockey. An outdoor oasis was also designed that features an in-ground pool, outdoor trellis, BBQ area, see-through fireplace, and pool house. Unique colonial traits were accentuated in the design by the addition of an exterior colonnade, brick patterning, and trim work. The renovation and addition had to match the unique character of the existing house, so great care was taken to match every detail to ensure a seamless transition from old to new.

The kitchen was a small and cramped c-shape with a narrow door leading into the dining area. The kitchen and dining room were completely opened up, creating a long, galley style, open layout which maximized the space and created a very good flow. Dimensions In Wood worked in conjuction with the client’s architect and contractor to complete this renovation. Custom cabinets were built to use every square inch of the floorplan, with the cabinets extending all the way to the ceiling for the most storage possible. Our woodworkers even created a step stool, staining it to match the kitchen for reaching these high cabinets. The family already had a kitchen table and chairs they were happy with, so we refurbished them to match the kitchen’s new stain and paint color. Crown molding top the cabinet boxes and extends across the ceiling where they create a coffered ceiling, highlighting the beautiful light fixtures centered on a wood medallion. Columns were custom built to provide separation between the different sections of the kitchen, while also providing structural support. Our master craftsmen kept the original 1925 glass cabinet doors, fitted them with modern hardware, repainted and incorporated them into new cabinet boxes. TASK LED Lighting was added to this china cabinet, highlighting the family’s decorative dishes. Appliance Garage On one side of the kitchen we built an appliance garage with doors that slide back into the cabinet, integrated power outlets and door activated lighting. Beside this is a small Galley Workstation for beverage and bar service which has the Galley Bar Kit perfect for sliced limes and more. Baking Cabinet with Pocket Doors On the opposite side, a baking cabinet was built to house a mixer and all the supplies needed for creating confections. Automatic LED lights, triggered by opening the door, create a perfect baker’s workstation. Both pocket doors slide back inside the cabinet for maximum workspace, then close to hide everything, leaving a clean, minimal kitchen devoid of clutter. Super deep, custom drawers feature custom dividers beneath the baking cabinet. Then beneath the appliance garage another deep drawer has custom crafted produce boxes per the customer’s request.
