This is an example of a transitional full sun backyard stone landscaping in Los Angeles.

Eichler in Marinwood - At the larger scale of the property existed a desire to soften and deepen the engagement between the house and the street frontage. As such, the landscaping palette consists of textures chosen for subtlety and granularity. Spaces are layered by way of planting, diaphanous fencing and lighting. The interior engages the front of the house by the insertion of a floor to ceiling glazing at the dining room. Jog-in path from street to house maintains a sense of privacy and sequential unveiling of interior/private spaces. Completed softscape elements - irrigation system (sprays/drip), rock/perennial beds and small sod areas. Reduced use of sod saves water and adds interest making this a transitional garden displaying aspects of traditional design and some elements of xeriscaping.

BAM! This is an example of the potentiality for the restoration of weathered fences. This is before & after the pressure washing only, and the fence is now ready to be stained any color; imagine the endless possibilities!

This front yard had to also act as a clients back yard. The existing back yard is a ravine, so there is little room to functionally use it. This created a design element to create a sense of space/privacy while also allowing the Mid Century Modern Architecture to shine through. (and keep the feel of a front yard) We used concrete walls to break up the rooms, and guide people into the front entrance. We added IPE details on the wall and planters to soften the concrete, and Ore Inc aluminum containers with a rust finish to frame the entrance. The Aspen trees break the horizontal plane and are lit up at night, further defining the front yard. All the trees are on color lights and have the ability to change at the click of a button for both holidays, and seasonal accents. The slate chip beds keep the bed lines clean and clearly define the planting ares versus the lawn areas. The walkway is one monolithic pour that mimics the look of large scale pavers, with the added function of smooth,set-in-place, concrete.

This backyard was made into a private outdoor retreat. The brick pavers are arranged in a herringbone pattern adding texture and character surrounding the clean lines of the rectangular pool and incorporated heated spa.

Dramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.

Once the existing brick patio was cleaned, the Woodard 'Sculptura' chair, bench and ottomans provide comfortable seating while a selection of framed succulents, as well as street art from the owner's collection, provide an interesting backdrop. Photo © Jude Parkinson-Morgan.

6' Tall White Vinyl Privacy Fence.

Vinyl fencing is easy to clean, easy to care for, and can come in virtually any color. PVC vinyl holds up well against the weather, and makes a great addition to any residential fence project. Once you've chosen your color, you'll never have to paint it, as it will forever retain its hue. It is most commonly used for pool fencing, and is also useful for community fencing for apartment buildings.
