The remodel of this 1930’s home was a balancing act between honoring the original style of the home and incorporating modern details for comfort and aesthetic. The remodel resulted in a 4,422 sf footprint that includes a master suite addition on the first floor, new hardwood flooring and natural stone tiles throughout the home, and smooth stucco exterior walls and landscape walls. The traditional style was modernized through the addition of steel exterior doors and windows. The complicated flashing and installation necessary for these doors and windows required thorough communication between Clark, the architect, and the window manufacturer. Some of the original framing members of the home were maintained, helping to keep the integrity of the original structure and design of the home. A traditional European look was invoked through details such as custom interior oak doors designed to sit flush with thick jambs.

Closeup of the ridgecap on a wood roof replacement on this historic North Branford farmhouse. Built in 1815, this project involved removing three layers of shingles to reveal a shiplap roof deck. We Installed Ice and Water barrier at the edges and ridge and around chimneys (which we also replaced - see that project here on Houzz). We installed 18" Western Red Cedar perfection shingles across all roofing and atop bay windows. All valleys and chimney/vent protrusions were flashed with copper, in keeping with the traditional look of the period.

Stunning modern design accents with quality siding construction and installation, in this case using straight nailing, with stainless steel fasteners and z-metal flashing.

The existing entry hall was narrow, and uninviting. The front porch was bland. The solution was to expand the entry hall out four feet with a two story piece that allowed for a new straight run of stairs, a larger foyer at the entry door with sidelights and a fanlight window above. A Palladian window was added at the stair landing with a window seat.. A new semi circular porch with a stone floor marks the main entry for the house. Existing Dining Room bay had a low ceiling which separated it from the main room. We removed the old bay and added a taller rectangular bay window with engaged columns to complement the entry porch. The new dining bay, front porch and new vertical brick element fit the scale of the large front facade and most importantly give it visual delight!

The deck has a fully equipped kitchen. The cabinets are custom made with marine grade plywood with copper flashing. Infrared heaters line the top edge of the deck walls. The trellis and all trim is made from composite for low maintenance.
