San Rafael
Overview: This garden project began with the demolition of an existing pool and decks cantilevered over a hillside. The garden was originally a Japanese-themed garden retreat and free-form shaped pool. While the client wanted to update and replace many elements, they sought to keep the free-form characteristics of the existing design and repurpose existing materials. BK Landscape Design created a new garden with revetment walls and steps to a succulent garden with salvaged boulders from the pool and pool coping. We built a colored concrete path to access a new wood trellis constructed on the center-line view from the master bedroom. A combination of Bay friendly, native and evergreen plantings were chosen for the planting palette. The overhaul of the yard included low-voltage lighting and minimal drainage. A new wood deck replaced the existing one at the entrance as well as a deck off of the master bedroom that was also constructed from repurposed materials. The style mimics the architectural detail of the mansard roof and simple horizontal wood siding of the house. After removing a juniper (as required by the San Rafael Fire Department within the Wildland-Urban interface) we designed and developed a full front-yard planting plan. All plants are Bay-Friendly, native, and irrigated with a more efficient in-line drip irrigation system to minimize water use. Low-voltage lighting and minimal drainage were also part of the overhaul of the front yard redesign.

This new custom house, completed in late 2012, was designed with an accessory dwelling unit to take advantage of an allowance in the single family zoning code in Seattle. The primary dwelling, 1300 square feet on the upper two stories houses a mother and teenager. The accessory dwelling, 750 square feet, provides a leasable smaller space that can be for a tenant or downsizing in the future.
Seattle based RE Store began by completely deconstructing the original home so that its salvaged parts could have a new life in other design applications. The new design for the home is modern with a sustainable theme, incorporating a palette of natural materials. The Paperstone, wood and steel staircase connects the open-plan living, dining areas and kitchen to the upstairs bedrooms and open library. Exterior decks extend the main interior living spaces while sliding glass panels allow the primary bedroom to connect.
Stylishly visible from all rooms in the open interior living spaces are two complementary objects, both lit from within, a frosted lexan pantry and a slatted reclaimed fir bathroom, with wood sourced from Windfall Lumber. Throughout the home, finishes are simple and minimal: polished concrete flooring, bright-white walls, and formaldehyde-free sapele and maple cabinetry. The main kitchen is outfitted with Ecotop counters and a custom sapele wood island that has large, handle-free pullout drawers on the cooking side and a built-in wine rack on the other. Maximizing storage, a custom built-in apple plywood bench and open wooden box shelves provide extra space.
A model of efficiency, the home maximizes the performance of the envelope of the building. The reclaimed fir car decking wrapped around the exterior from Windfall Lumber, creates the rainscreen siding and is sourced locally from a deconstructed warehouse in Tacoma WA. In addition, access to daylight through high-performance glazing, solar preheat for domestic hot water needs, in-floor radiant heating and a green roof created by the owner adds to the efficiency.

Awarded by the Classical institute of art and architecture , the linnean house has a restrained and simple elevation of doors and windows. Nestled in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Washington, D.C., the Linnean House is classical in both plan and elevation throughout its award-winning house plans. The main mass, comprising of the most formal and public spaces, is a spatial triptych along a symmetrical main axis. Inside the luxury home, the limestone façade, simple but well-proportioned with classical elements, extends itself into both the entry portico and main foyer with consistent proportions and materiality. This introduction allows the flanking living and dining rooms to be perceived as separate pavilions, each equipped with eight equal-proportioned French doors symmetrical of the main axis.
Beyond the classical spaces are two wings which lead to the master suite and a kitchen/family space, respectively. Both of which are situated to queue from the French door axis, a focal feature in the repeatedly published home design. At the entry foyer, the stark stone luxury architecture is warmed by two symmetrical wood armoire-like freestanding sculptural objects, a persistent theme throughout the luxury house. In the kitchen, for instance, stand four similar wood armoire objects at opposite corners that act as columns and help give this space a sense of boundary and enclosure. The master bath vanity, in similar fashion, is introduced as a central free-standing form anchoring itself as a notable presence in the space. Lastly, the wine room is designed as a series of free-standing heavy wood cavity walls spanned only by a hint of glass.

Austin's custom home builder John Siemering presents this contemporary twist on the traditional Texas Farmhouse located in Dripping Springs. This expansive home features a mixed exterior design showcasing limestone paired together with board and batten cedar siding, Douglas fir columns and a metal and concrete tile roof. The custom pine double front door opens into the breathtaking great room featuring a vaulted ceiling with decorative fir trusses, white shiplap walls and dark wood floors. The large limestone fireplace is the focal point of this impressive space.
The use of custom fir ceiling/header beams and unique wood doors continues throughout nearly every room in the home to enhance the contemporary rustic farmhouse feel. The stunning open kitchen steals the show with an artisan hammered metal vent hood juxtaposed next to a full subway tile backsplash. The kitchen also features a wood paneled ceiling, marble countertops, white cabinetry, a Lacanche range and a double refrigerator enclosed behind custom wood panels.
The luxurious master bedroom and bathroom exude traditional upscale style with large custom ceiling beams to tie into the farmhouse theme. His and her white vanities, a free standing tub, large walk in shower and plenty of marble tile throughout turn the master bathroom into a high end spa-like retreat. An additional game room space contains a full wet bar with granite countertop, shiplap walls, custom pastel sliding barn doors and french exterior doors leading to the rear of the home. The rear courtyard is highlighted with an outdoor kitchen, bar and grill area overlooking the pool. The outdoor dining and living space has multiple zones thanks to a large outdoor see through fireplace with seating on either side. Last but not least, this home also comes with a large free standing 3 car garage structure with half of an indoor basketball court on the upper level.

Way out west in the Chicago suburbs, Chicagoland Home Products digs into their bag of custom organization tricks and uses them to integrate unique storage solutions into this closet and dressing area. Nearly everywhere you look, think customization.
Look first at the flip up bench, flanked by triangular shelving on each end. If all that space for storage and display is not enough then check out where it is located, squarely in front of the window, with all that natural light to enjoy, while you slip on shoes from the glass shelves right next to it.
Continuity comes from the see-through shelving which keeps the design theme of the wall paper alive. The adjacent cubby-style shelving provides more room to house folding clothing or other items.
The glass shelf theme is reprised, at the end of the cubbies, where it is tucked in neatly, at an angle that keeps it out of the way as the door opens.
There is ample room for hanging clothes, illuminated by LED in-system lighting, and shoe shelving flanked on the left by mirrors and inset drawers.
All of this surrounds free standing drawers with a perfect top for folding.
It’s enough to make you dizzy with delight at how all the Aria finish materials spin together under the creative baton of Chicagoland Home Products to design a practical and attractive space.

Maintenance-free materials were used, utilizing a two-toned theme with picture-framing in a darker color, which gives a streamlined feel. Aluminum balusters of bronze highlight the railing and give it a polished look. (Prior to adding this deck, there was no access to the backyard from the living area; the feel was "boxed-in" with a small screened-in porch off of the living area). The homeowner desired a deck area to step out onto, to take in the views and enjoy outdoor living.
