This kitchen had a big transition! Walls, soffits, laminate countertops and the old tile backsplash were all torn out and a doorway was widened to make room for the ‘new’ improved kitchen. Granite countertops were installed and an 18 gauge stainless steel apron sink was added. Functional as well as striking, the large undermount sink has a built in soap dispenser, water filter and insta-hot faucet. New cabinets were added and both new and existing cabinets were refaced in white with new Amesbury doors and drawer fronts added. Indie the cabinets, full extension rollouts and a lazy susan were added to upgrade the storage capabilities.

Ania Omski-Talwar Location: Danville, CA, USA The house was built in 1963 and is reinforced cinder block construction, unusual for California, which makes any renovation work trickier. The kitchen we replaced featured all maple cabinets and floors and pale pink countertops. With the remodel we didn’t change the layout, or any window/door openings. The cabinets may read as white, but they are actually cream with an antique glaze on a flat panel door. All countertops and backsplash are granite. The original copper hood was replaced by a custom one in zinc. Dark brick veneer fireplace is now covered in white limestone. The homeowners do a lot of entertaining, so even though the overall layout didn’t change, I knew just what needed to be done to improve function. The initial layout of the kitchen worked well for Todd and Jennifer, with the exception of the existing adjacent dinette area (not shown). Because they have a separate dining room, the dinette was redundant and instead of being used for eating, it was an underutilized area just waiting to be loved. By stretching their existing island into the dinette, they created casual seating on the dry end of the island that activates the formerly underused space and creates an inviting place for family and friends to be in the kitchen without jamming zones dedicated for food prep. Revitalizing a 1950’s Ranch The owners of this property purchased the dilapidated 1950’s ranch with the intention of demolishing it and building a modern residence in its place. A yearlong demolition delay caused the owners to rethink their plan, and instead, looked to Slocum Hall to design an addition and reconfigure the existing home to meet their programmatic needs. The prominent two-car front-facing garage was converted into Living Space with 12’ ceilings. An addition towards the rear of the property housed a new Garage, Mudroom and expanded Kitchen spaces. All the living spaces were reconfigured to function more efficiently, creating four bedroom suites and an expansive basement for recreation and informal entertaining.

Inspiration for a large timeless carpeted bedroom remodel in Chicago with blue walls and no fireplace

The vanity uses open shelving and closed cabinets to maximize storage and meet the functional needs of the client. A palette of greys and whites is contrasted with matte black fixtures throughout.

Our client wanted a unique, modern space that would pay tribute to the industrial history of the original factory building, yet remain an inviting space for entertaining, socialising and cooking. This project focused on designing an aesthetically pleasing, functional kitchen that complemented the industrial style of the building. The kitchen space needed to be impressive in its own right, without taking away from the main features of the open-plan living area. Every facet of the kitchen, from the smallest tile to the largest appliance was carefully considered. A combination of creative design and flawless joinery made it possible to use diverse materials such as stainless steel, reclaimed timbers, marble and reflective surfaces alongside integrated state-of-the-art appliances created an urbane, inner-city space suitable for large-scale entertaining or relaxing.

This Bent Creek renovation and addition gave the existing 1920s home a spacious interior and modern design while still maintaining its original character. The homeowners enjoy hosting large gatherings, but the narrow footprint and small spaces created a lot of congestion inside. To alleviate this problem, the homeowners wanted to expand the cramped kitchen and living spaces, but a huge oak tree sat only 5 feet from the kitchen window. The tree holds great sentimental value to the owners, so sacrificing the tree was out of the question, and locating the kitchen expansion elsewhere was not financially feasible. As a compromise, a large portion of the house adjacent to the kitchen was demolished, and most of the kitchen function was expanded in this direction.
