This suburban home was built back in the 1970s and still retained its original "charming" colored tile, petite shower, and a tiny 9x9 kitchen. The major issue? It was outdated and cramped! The owners desired additional space for their dining area, larger kitchen, bathrooms and updated finishes. Our team managed to add square footage to the living room to accommodate a full sized dining table overlooking the garden. By moving the dining room out of the kitchen, this helped us almost double the kitchen's size where we added a bar, full pantry and plenty of storage. We removed a hall closet to expand the bathroom area, enabling us to create two rectangular bathrooms instead of two intertwined bathrooms. In the primary bathroom, we added a full-sized shower with a bench, as well as plenty of cabinet storage. Additionally, we gave the house a fresh look with new hardwood floors that matched the old ones (still visible in the bedrooms), as well as new solid core doors, hardware, and brand new paint throughout. The exterior was revamped with new lighting, landscaping, cement patio, fresh paint, address numbers and an aluminum pergola to provide shade from the hot summer sun. This farmhouse style home was already lovely and inviting. We just added some finishing touches in the kitchen and expanded and enhanced the basement. In the kitchen we enlarged the center island so that it is now five-feet-wide. We rebuilt the sides, added the cross-back, “x”, design to each end and installed new fixtures. My client came with inspirational room design pictures that she saw in a magazine and told me to use it as a guide to design her family room. She told me she wanted the exact same concept but in a traditional way. This room was designed around a neutral palette with hints of black and gold accents. My client likes traditional curves but appreciates layered textures and finishes in the space and the mix of fabric and bold patterns as accents. I decided to use two roll arm sofas in a cream fabric with black nailheads to create contrast. I used a round traditional table in black to set the tone and create drama. It’s hand-woven cane top has a solid wood carved center rosette. The tabletop sits on four bold hand-carved legs with petite ferrules. The workmanship is impeccable! I reupholstered her existing chair and ottoman in a bold ikat pattern in different shades of black and used a black and cream animal print fabric for the accent pillows. Lastly, I used a diamond textured neutral rug to ground the room and a mix of gold and black finishes were used on the lighting and accents pieces to enhance the core design.
