Arbors are a focal point, guiding the guest to the proper entryway into the garden. They can be free standing, or connected to a fence to mark the territory’s perimeter.

We were asked to create a significant yet subtle formal setting for our client’s piece of historic stone garden sculpture. Our solution was to frame the sculpture with a semi-circular limestone colonnade, designed with classic Tuscan detailing. We then created curved stone steps on the uphill side of the site, to complete the circular composition.

Just what do we call this? I call it many things. Pergola, arbor, Bauer, trellising, shade structure, all of the above! please also note the deck on the right which was completely reworked to have it make a pleasing statement that definitely did not exist when the other carpenter got done with it!

As you look out your kitchen window into your backyard, where does your eye go? If it keeps wandering, you may be missing an important element in your landscape. Just like your interior space, your outdoor area needs a focal point as well.

If so inspired, one can grow certain species of grapes along a pergola as well. My grandfather had black grapes in his backyard when I was growing up in Connecticut. I remember tasting the fruit of the vine in the summertime. So juicy and fresh! And what a cool treat in the summer heat!
