A 3,014 sq ft home on a 7,000 sq ft hillside lot on Laveta Terrace in Echo Park. Four bedrooms, four bathrooms across two storeys, with mountain views from the primary bath. The house runs on a black and white palette, held from the entry through to the bathrooms. Custom grey cabinetry with vertical storage, an undermount sink and white subway tile in the kitchen. Grey mosaic tile under a walnut floating vanity in the primary bath — the walnut is one of the few warm notes in the house, and it's used sparingly. A single palette across a whole house is harder than it looks: every material has to be chosen against the same two references, and there is nowhere to hide a near-miss. Bi-fold doors open the living room to the outside. A structural pillar left exposed to anchor the room rather than buried inside a wall. Who wouldn't want to keep their apartment in Buenos Aires? This family did. Which meant their new home in Bloomington was a fresh start and needed remodeling as well as furnishings—rugs, seating, art and everything in between. Local architect Russ Herndon revamped and opened up the kitchen in this 1970s ranch, moving awkwardly placed doors in three different locations to improve the traffic flow and allow for optimal furniture placement. SYI swept in to furnish and finish the public spaces with a careful mix of vintage and new, neutral and bold, family comfort and modern chic. The homeowner (turned friend) was a wonderful collaborator and speedy decision maker. Only one hard and fast rule governed the process: no yellow and blue, the colors of Brazil, Argentina's arch rival in soccer.

The minute you descend the stairs to the basement you know you are entering a fun space. The striped walls are really cool and create a great environment for the kids to play and hangout with friends. It was important for this area to appeal to young children to teenagers so we selected a super comfy sectional and a mid century modern white lacquer table and chairs for playing games, crafting or doing homework.
