Despite a tight budget and very little time, we were able to transform this teenager’s bedroom into a mature grown-up space that is serene and restful. This one-day makeover was achieved simply by rearranging the furniture, adding new pillows, and by borrowing a few accessories from other rooms in the house. We started by moving the bed in front of the windows, which made the bedroom look more spacious and created a strong focal point. We kept all of the existing bedding and simply replaced the colorful purple duvet with a large white throw we bought at IKEA. Adding cushions with earthy colors, combined with a Buddha and greenery, helped create a peaceful resting space. In the “before” picture, the night table was hiding beside the bed, now it draws attention and provides the perfect surface on which to display accessories and a table lamp. As for the walls, we switched the purple and white flower artwork for a more abstract piece that ties in nicely with the colors from the throw pillows. We borrowed a nesting table from the living room and draped it with a sheepskin to add softness and warmth to the room and also brought in tall faux spring blooming branches to add height to the space. The bright green decorative stool injects a pop of color to the room and ties in nicely with the bohemian-inspired pillow. We moved the brown leather bench to the foot of the bed to break up the white-on-white bedding and to create the perfect catch-all to throw clothes on at the end of a long day. Tip: Adding a touch of black in the room as we did with the lampshade, vase, and bed frame breaks up the neutral color palette and gives the space a touch of elegance. With only a few hours and a small budget we created an inviting, peaceful and zen-like space, perfect to catch up on beauty sleep. ©UTRdecorating.com

This backyard patio garden was transformed with the client’s goal of minimizing lawn and creating intimate gathering space. Layered perennial beds are filled with a rich diversity of texture, form and color, enveloping the patio with stunning 3-dimensional views. Take a wander into the planting and you’ll find a meandering exploratory pathway that immerses you in nature’s sounds, movement and smells, up close. This grassy channel also provides the kids fun access from one playing area to the next, hidden from the grown-ups, free to roam and explore.

Playroom & craft room: We transformed a large suburban New Jersey basement into a farmhouse inspired, kids playroom and craft room. Kid-friendly custom millwork cube and bench storage was designed to store ample toys and books, using mixed wood and metal materials for texture. The vibrant, gender-neutral color palette stands out on the neutral walls and floor and sophisticated black accents in the art, mid-century wall sconces, and hardware. The addition of a teepee to the play area was the perfect, fun finishing touch! Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States The design of this 4500sf, home….the steeply-sloping site; we thought of it as a tree house for grownups. Nestled into the hillside and surrounding by Aspens as well as Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pines, this HERS 38 home combines energy efficiency with a strong mountain palette of stone, stucco, and timber to blend with its surroundings. A strong stone base breaks up the massing of the three-story façade, with an expansive deck establishing a piano noble (elevated main floor) to take full advantage of the property’s amazing views and the owners’ desire for indoor/outdoor living. High ceilings and large windows create a light, spacious entry, which terminates into a custom hickory stair that winds its way to the center of the home. The open floor plan and French doors connect the great room to a gourmet kitchen, dining room, and flagstone patio terraced into the landscaped hillside. Landing dramatically in the great room, a stone fireplace anchors the space, while a wall of glass opens to the soaring covered deck, whose structure was designed to minimize any obstructions to the view.

These homeowners already had a finished basement, but found that they didn’t utilize the space well. Other than as a play area for the kids, the large space wasn’t welcoming for entertaining. Already happy with previous service they’d received from The Cabinet Store (laundry room cabinet storage!) they turned to us to help them give their basement a “grown-up feel.” Though they already had a large TV and some sitting furniture, the room needed an entertaining area. Here’s what we accomplished (see the photos below): We designed two bar areas for them, using cabinetry from our Countryside Cabinetry line – affordable and attractive. The cabinet doors are the Lancaster style in Birch with a Brownberry stain. We used a combination of flat center panel doors and beaded center panel doors to jazz it up. We also installed brand new Cambria (color Buckingham) on all the countertop surfaces. The homeowners (and all their friends!) love the new basement. And though it seems contrary, we’re not surprised that everyone tells them the room feels so much bigger even though we’ve added cabinetry and countertops to the space – if you use space well a room always seems more inviting. Best of all, this family is finally making great use of their basement!

Inspiration for an industrial bedroom remodel in Dallas

This backyard is appealing to children and adults alike. Kids love the naturalized sand pit area, a rustic boulder fountain for water play, a dry creek bed with boulders for climbing, a tunnel for adventure play and a paved trike raceway leading to the playset on the other side of the yard. Grown-ups enjoy a lounging area of Bluestone at ground level, and a spacious new deck with stained cedar posts and maintenance-free Trex decking. Integrated lighting provides an elegant area for dining and entertaining day or night. Three raised planters at ground level are for raising vegetables but also double as seatwalls.

For this couple, planning to move back to their rambler home in Arlington after living overseas for few years, they were ready to get rid of clutter, clean up their grown-up kids’ boxes, and transform their home into their dream home for their golden years. The old home included a box-like 8 feet x 10 feet kitchen, no family room, three small bedrooms and two back to back small bathrooms. The laundry room was located in a small dark space of the unfinished basement. This home is located in a cul-de-sac, on an uphill lot, of a very secluded neighborhood with lots of new homes just being built around them. The couple consulted an architectural firm in past but never were satisfied with the final plans. They approached Michael Nash Custom Kitchens hoping for fresh ideas. The backyard and side yard are wooded and the existing structure was too close to building restriction lines. We developed design plans and applied for special permits to achieve our client’s goals. The remodel includes a family room, sunroom, breakfast area, home office, large master bedroom suite, large walk-in closet, main level laundry room, lots of windows, front porch, back deck, and most important than all an elevator from lower to upper level given them and their close relative a necessary easier access. The new plan added extra dimensions to this rambler on all four sides. Starting from the front, we excavated to allow a first level entrance, storage, and elevator room. Building just above it, is a 12 feet x 30 feet covered porch with a leading brick staircase. A contemporary cedar rail with horizontal stainless steel cable rail system on both the front porch and the back deck sets off this project from any others in area. A new foyer with double frosted stainless-steel door was added which contains the elevator. The garage door was widened and a solid cedar door was installed to compliment the cedar siding. The left side of this rambler was excavated to allow a storage off the garage and extension of one of the old bedrooms to be converted to a large master bedroom suite, master bathroom suite and walk-in closet. We installed matching brick for a seam-less exterior look. The entire house was furnished with new Italian imported highly custom stainless-steel windows and doors. We removed several brick and block structure walls to put doors and floor to ceiling windows. A full walk in shower with barn style frameless glass doors, double vanities covered with selective stone, floor to ceiling porcelain tile make the master bathroom highly accessible. The other two bedrooms were reconfigured with new closets, wider doorways, new wood floors and wider windows. Just outside of the bedroom, a new laundry room closet was a major upgrade. A second HVAC system was added in the attic for all new areas. The back side of the master bedroom was covered with floor to ceiling windows and a door to step into a new deck covered in trex and cable railing. This addition provides a view to wooded area of the home. By excavating and leveling the backyard, we constructed a two story 15’x 40’ addition that provided the tall ceiling for the family room just adjacent to new deck, a breakfast area a few steps away from the remodeled kitchen. Upscale stainless-steel appliances, floor to ceiling white custom cabinetry and quartz counter top, and fun lighting improved this back section of the house with its increased lighting and available work space. Just below this addition, there is extra space for exercise and storage room. This room has a pair of sliding doors allowing more light inside. The right elevation has a trapezoid shape addition with floor to ceiling windows and space used as a sunroom/in-home office. Wide plank wood floors were installed throughout the main level for continuity. The hall bathroom was gutted and expanded to allow a new soaking tub and large vanity. The basement half bathroom was converted to a full bathroom, new flooring and lighting in the entire basement changed the purpose of the basement for entertainment and spending time with grandkids. Off white and soft tone were used inside and out as the color schemes to make this rambler spacious and illuminated. Final grade and landscaping, by adding a few trees, trimming the old cherry and walnut trees in backyard, saddling the yard, and a new concrete driveway and walkway made this home a unique and charming gem in the neighborhood.

Our clients were looking to make this home their forever home and to create a warm and welcoming space that the whole family would enjoy returning to every day. One of our primary goals in this project was to change how our clients moved through their home. We tossed aside the existing walls that blocked off the kitchen and introduced a butler’s pantry to connect the kitchen directly to the dining room. Contrast is king in this home, and we utilized a variety of light and dark finishes to create distinctive layers and lean into opportunities for accents. To tie the space in this home together, we introduced warm hardwood flooring throughout the main level and selected a soft grey paint as our primary wall color. Kitchen- The heart of this home is most definitely the kitchen! We erased every trace of the original builder kitchen and created a space that welcomes one and all. The glorious island, with its light cabinetry and dramatic quartz countertop, provides the perfect gathering place for morning coffee and baking sessions. At the perimeter of the kitchen, we selected a handsome grey finish with a brushed linen effect for an extra touch of texture that ties in with the high variation backsplash tile giving us a softened handmade feel. Black metal accents from the hardware to the light fixtures unite the kitchen with the rest of the home. Butler’s Pantry- The Butler’s Pantry quickly became one of our favorite spaces in this home! We had fun with the backsplash tile patten (utilizing the same tile we highlighted in the kitchen but installed in a herringbone pattern). Continuing the warm tones through this space with the butcher block counter and open shelving, it works to unite the front and back of the house. Plus, this space is home to the kegerator with custom family tap handles! Mud Room- We wanted to make sure we gave this busy family a landing place for all their belongings. With plenty of cabinetry storage, a sweet built-in bench, and hooks galore there’s no more jockeying to find a home for coats. Fireplace- A double-sided fireplace means double the opportunity for a dramatic focal point! On the living room side (the tv-free grown-up zone) we utilized reclaimed wooden planks to add layers of texture and bring in more cozy warm vibes. On the family room side (aka the tv room) we mixed it up with a travertine ledger stone that ties in with the warm tones of the kitchen island. Staircase- The standard builder handrail was just not going to do it anymore! So, we leveled up designed a custom steel & wood railing for this home with a dark finish that allows it to contrast beautifully against the walls and tie in with the dark accent finishes throughout the home.
