This Stonegate Builders home features a unique upper-level loft that's open across the staircase. A custom console table and seating area was created in the nook at the top of the stairs, and the remaining loft area was made into a family room and home office space.

This kitchen and breakfast room was inspired by the owners' Scandinavian heritage, as well as by a café they love in Europe. Bookshelves in the kitchen and breakfast room make for easy lingering over a snack and a book. The Heath Ceramics tile backsplash also subtly celebrates the author owner and her love of literature: the tile pattern echoes the spines of books on a bookshelf...All photos by Laurie Black.

Large cottage black two-story mixed siding exterior home photo in San Francisco

We really create a completely different look to this space. We open the walls so that the kitchen can be view from the living room and remove half of the wall between the living and dining wall to create a ledge so that the entire house will not feel small but big and expansive. We also closed the entryway from the kitchen to the living room near the wall which allowed us more space in both the kitchen and living room. To truly appreciate what we did in this room, please see the before of this room.

This project features “found space” within the existing house. The original two story family room was too tall and out of scale with adjoining spaces, allowed noise from both floors to travel throughout the house, and was hard to heat and cool comfortably. Closing in and adding a second floor to the family room created two “new rooms”: an intimate and well scaled family room on the first floor, featuring a coffered ceiling, columns and built ins to create a level of detail missing from the original room; and a children’s play room on the second floor, which retains the slightly domed ceiling and octagon shape of the original family room to create a fun place for the children to play adjacent to their bedrooms. This original bathroom was a great size to begin with but just needed to be updated from it's dated, overwhelming tile and plain cabinets. By using lots of white finishes, we were able to make the space feel even larger, airier and calming. Instead of a large tub deck with a drop in tub that wasted space, we opted for a large, comfortable freestanding Victoria and Albert tub with free standing faucet. This helped open up the space as well as allowing for an additional storage cabinet by Dura Supreme Cabinetry By using a porcelain tile that looks like marble, you have the beauty of marble with out the maintenance of it. Using remnants of marble slabs for the countertops we were able to add in that additional touch of elegance to tie the look all together. The 3x6 subway tile lends to the traditional look of the house, but adding in a stone and glass mosaic makes it look updated, and adds just a bit of color. Having a rain dome and handshower in the shower gives you a spa experience. There was also a rather large radiator that we had to deal with behind the tub, so we made our own custom radiator cover.

For this commission the client hired us to do the interiors of their new home which was under construction. The style of the house was very traditional however the client wanted the interiors to be transitional, a mixture of contemporary with more classic design. We assisted the client in all of the material, fixture, lighting, cabinetry and built-in selections for the home. The floors throughout the first floor of the home are a creme marble in different patterns to suit the particular room; the dining room has a marble mosaic inlay in the tradition of an oriental rug. The ground and second floors are hardwood flooring with a herringbone pattern in the bedrooms. Each of the seven bedrooms has a custom ensuite bathroom with a unique design. The master bathroom features a white and gray marble custom inlay around the wood paneled tub which rests below a venetian plaster domes and custom glass pendant light. We also selected all of the furnishings, wall coverings, window treatments, and accessories for the home. Custom draperies were fabricated for the sitting room, dining room, guest bedroom, master bedroom, and for the double height great room. The client wanted a neutral color scheme throughout the ground floor; fabrics were selected in creams and beiges in many different patterns and textures. One of the favorite rooms is the sitting room with the sculptural white tete a tete chairs. The master bedroom also maintains a neutral palette of creams and silver including a venetian mirror and a silver leafed folding screen. Additional unique features in the home are the layered capiz shell walls at the rear of the great room open bar, the double height limestone fireplace surround carved in a woven pattern, and the stained glass dome at the top of the vaulted ceilings in the great room.

Originally, the exterior of the Napa ranch residence was a standard knocked down stucco finish. We covered over the entire exterior of the house with a natural plaster product that has been made in Italy for centuries, known as Rialto or Vero. This product is a combination of slaked lime mixed with 60% reconstituted crushed marble dust. Quarried from the legendary Carrara marble mines. The finish itself is a vertically combed striated texture embedded into the plaster. While it cures, a transparent group of patinas are applied to the stone-like plaster substance to create a look of an aged villa.
