This backyard for a townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village is made for entertaining and relaxation! Our re-design of the space included artificial turf to replace a failing lawn, updated plantings, overhead string lighting, and new lawn furniture. The existing plantings of boxwoods and birch trees, while healthy, were a little bland and boring looking, so we spiced up the plantings by adding more color, texture, and variety to the space. Our design plans included purple heuchera, gold hakone grass, creeping Jenny, rhododendrons, and a coral-bark maple tree. We picked a high-end, eco-friendly (petroleum free) artificial turf that looks exactly like real grass and is maintenance-free. It’s especially important to choose petroleum free turf for high traffic areas where children and pets may frequently come into contact with the turf. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.

Worked with a Vermont stone mason with local stone to create the entry walk ways and stone walls. All work was beautifully executed with a dry mount technique. Found old carriage lamps and converted them on 15" stems for path lighting....like going through an enchanted forest.. Staghorn NYC designed and installed this townhouse backyard garden for a young family in Brooklyn. The clients requested a pea gravel patio for it's casual style and great drainage properties and a palette of mostly native plants. River birch trees anchor the back of the yard and provide dappled shade, and lush border plantings give color and interest during all four seasons.

First year planting for this project is a simple monochrome of greens and white. Low maintenance with small white flowers on the Geranium in the spring followed by the Annabelle Hydrangea white flowers all summer to late fall. The birches are preset through the summer with nice fall yellow coloring and interesting beige exfoliating bark for the winter. Some of the Heritage Birch trees are split for evening effect, underneath the wall caps are led lights as well as the steps.

This urban backyard oasis features 3’ by 3’ bluestone flagstone with blue-chip joints that seamlessly set the stage for backyard entertaining. In order to achieve greenery all year long, we planted Boxwood, Rhododendron, Arborvitae and Pachysandra. And, in the hopes of creating privacy in a bustling Chicago neighborhood, we installed a wood privacy fence, Japanese Maples, a Birch and a Spruce tree.

APLD 2021 Silver Landscape Design Award. An expansive back yard landscape with several mature oak trees and a stunning Golden Locust tree has been transformed into a welcoming outdoor retreat. The renovations include a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees occupy some of the sunniest areas of the landscape. A variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants for both sunny and shady areas include several succulents, grasses, CA natives and other site-appropriate Mediterranean plants complimented by a variety of boulders.
