This project is an exhilarating exploration into function, simplicity, and the beauty of a white palette. Our wonderful client and friend was seeking a massive upgrade to a newly purchased home and had hopes of integrating her European inspired aesthetic throughout. At the forefront of consideration was clean-lined simplicity, and this concept is evident in every space in the home. The highlight of the project is the heart of the home: the kitchen. We integrated smooth, sleek, white slab cabinetry to create a functional kitchen with minimal door details and upgraded modernity. The cabinets are topped with concrete-look quartz from Caesarstone; a welcome soft contrast that further emphasizes the contemporary approach we took. The backsplash is a simple and elongated white subway paired against white grout for a modernist grid that virtually melts into the background. Taking the kitchen far outside of its intended footprint, we created a floating island with a waterfall countertop that can house critical cooking fixtures on one side and adequate seating on the other. The island is backed by a dramatic exotic wood countertop that extends into a full wall splash reaching the ceiling. Pops of black and high-gloss finishes in appliances add a touch of drama in an otherwise white field. The entire main level has new hickory floors in a natural finish, allowing the gorgeous variation of the wood to shine. Also included on the main level is a re-face to the living room fireplace, powder room, and upgrades to all walls and lighting. Upstairs, we created two critical retreats: a warm Mediterranean inspired bathroom for the client's mother, and the master bathroom. In the mother's bathroom, we covered the floors and a large accent wall with dramatic travertine tile in a bold Versailles pattern. We paired this highly traditional tile with sleek contemporary floating vanities and dark fixtures for contrast. The shower features a slab quartz base and thin profile glass door. In the master bath, we welcomed drama and explored space planning and material use adventurously. Keeping with the quiet monochromatic palette, we integrated all black and white into our bathroom concept. The floors are covered with large format graphic tiles in a deco pattern that reach through every part of the space. At the vanity area, high gloss white floating vanities offer separate space for his/her use. Tall linear LED fixtures provide ample lighting and illuminate another grid pattern backsplash that runs floor to ceiling. The show-stopping bathtub is a square steel soaker tub that nestles quietly between windows in the bathroom's far corner. We paired this tub with an unapologetic tub filler that is bold and large in scale. Next to the tub, an open shower is adorned with a full expanse of white grid subway tile, a slab quartz shower base, and sleek steel fixtures. This project was exciting and inspiring in its ability to push the boundaries of simplicity and quietude in color. We love the result and are so thrilled that our wonderful clients can enjoy this home for years to come!

When the homeowners purchased this traditional colonial in Vienna, Virginia, they were already planning on making some serious changes. The home’s original floor plan was boxy and closed in, making traffic flow from one room to the next virtually non-existent. Additionally, the existing décor left a lot to be desired. Their vision was to open up the layout and create a more contemporary look using lots of light, soft colors and high end materials. They decided to add a two-story addition to the back of the home’s existing breakfast room and the small upstairs bedroom above it. The old breakfast area was too small for their daily meals and their teenage son needed more space in his bedroom. They also decided to add a sunroom/family room to the left side of their old family room. This new room offers a vaulted ceiling with four skylights and lots of windows with a better view of the side and backyard. To create a more open floor plan, the team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes removed the load bearing wall between the kitchen and family room and installed a large beam to handle the second floor load. Not only did this open up the space, but it allowed for the addition of a breakfast bar. The right side bearing wall of the old family room was also removed and replaced with structural beams. This action created a continuous flow between the new sunroom and old family room. Separated by a double-sided stone fireplace, this new sunroom is connected to a new outside sun deck built using a maintenance-free decking material. The old family room with new lighting now serves as a casual seating area. It also features an eight-foot long built-in desk. The newly updated kitchen features granite countertops with matching tile backsplash, professional-quality appliances, a porcelain tile floor and custom cabinets, including a large pantry. The new breakfast room is more spacious and gets daylight from three different angles. Upstairs, a new 12’ x 20’ bedroom is a great place for this teenage football fan to hang out. It provides significantly more closet space than the old room and lets in more sunlight as well. The old laundry room was converted to a new mudroom with locker style cabinetry and a place for kids to store their bag packs. New plumbing and electrical were implemented in a new closet in an upper hallway to facilitate the new washer and dryer. In this remodel, form and function have come together in an open concept design that meets the needs of the entire family.

LOS ANGELES, CA / SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENTIAL The commission for this 4,300-square-foot residence came with significant challenges for the architects – a house had once existed on the lot but had burned down and the attempt to replace the house had stalled, leading to an abatement order and a lapse of permits. Our first challenge was to revive the lapsed construction permit by proposing to “modify” the existing structure. The practical effect this had was to fix the footprint of the new home to the existing structure’s plan outline. Having thereby inherited the large, dense block of the original house, the new strategy became one of substituting selective areas of indoor space for outdoor courtyard. This strategy of trading indoor space for outdoor courtyard allowed an erosion of the formerly monolithic structure into a series of distinct volumetric elements, and further suggested that the architectural pieces could cohere as a “village.” The main level is further eroded by large, glazed planes, merging indoor with outdoor, and virtually stretching the landscape across interior space. Moving the detached garage from the rear yard to beneath the new living space allowed for a 75-meter lap pool and a shaded olive garden. The gardens include built-in seating, extensive use of ornamental grasses and Zen-like interior courtyards. A material palette of fossilized stone, bonderized-galvanized metal, and natural Douglas fir allows for the warmth desired by the wife, while providing the modernity required by the husband. Programmatically, her music room borrows from the calm and protected olive court in the rear, while his office becomes a pavilion set in the landscape, which both addresses the street and acts as a sheltering monument for the terraced entry garden.

When this homeowner remodeled and added onto their existing home, they moved in with mom. It was a project that took several months. Lots of decision to make and so many options. With small children in the home, they specifically wanted virtually maintenance-free countertops. But what product and what design. Learning that Cambria was made in their home state of Minnesota, the product decision was easy. Not able to zero in on just one design for their whole home, they opted to use several designs beginning with Cambria Galloway quartz on the combination kitchen island that include wood and quartz; accented by Cambria Canongate on the perimeter cabinets. In the family room you'll find a large u-shaped wet bar with Cambria Sheffield countertops. If you wander the basement for some entertainment, you'll find a wine cellar with Cambria Blackwood and the master bathroom vanity showcases Cambria Darlington.

Pacific Energy's Estate is the solution where wall space is available but depth is limited, its a zero clearance fireplace that’s just over 16 inches deep, The Estate was designed for easy installation in new construction and renovations, it's contemporary lines provide a clear view of the flame with a high-efficiency heat exchanger and user-controlled fans to distribute radiant and convection heat. Its Design-A-Fire options include a selection of burners, surrounds and interiors, to suit virtually any decor.

The designers of this solid core interior door model took their inspiration from the rich history of Bulgaria’s breathtakingly beautiful capital. Spanning thousands of years, the city’s narrative includes two Roman periods (both the Western Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire left their mark and influenced all future construction, beginning with the complete rebuilding of the city’s center and some suburbs by Emperor Justinian I), a medieval period that added a Gothic touch to the cityscape, a lavish Baroque period followed by rapid Neoclassical developments, and, of course, Baroque Revival pioneered by some of the local masterbuilders, all of which has had a profound influence on interior designs (and interior doors as well). The Sofia interior door model comes in two versions: just Sofia, suitable for virtually any door configuration and Sofia La Luce, the queen of interior doors with glass.

Goal: Turn a starter home into a family home. In the mid-2020s market with interest rates heightened and home prices through the roof, more and more families find themselves looking to place deeper roots in what they bought as a “starter home.” This family bought their 1600 square foot home prior to having children, but they’ve now expanded to a family of six. Having fallen in love with their neighborhood, they came to us looking for a way to expand their shared living spaces while also reworking some of the bedrooms to allow older kids their own space. The project program includes a new primary suite and laundry room on the back of the existing bedroom wing. The three existing bedrooms remained virtually untouched with only limited aesthetic updates. Additionally, it rearranged the front entry door from a hidden single door to a welcoming double door and shifted the kitchen to allow for a foyer and increased dining room space. The kitchen opens up to the new secondary living room with a large island dividing the two spaces.

This tiny retro kitchen was both cut off from the living and dining spaces and had virtually no counter space to speak of. With the birth of the owners first child the need for a functional family kitchen became of utmost importance. Several issues had to be considered including leaving the existing back door and basement access, opening the kitchen to the main living spaces and creating a larger feeling kitchen. In order to serve these needs and stretch the budget we came up with the smallest addition possible by adding 32 sf. This small addition made a huge impact on the functionality of the kitchen by providing ample storage, an island and plenty of counter space. Challenges with your backyard space? Yeah, that's no problem for us. In this space, the deck could not be attached to the house because of the way this turn-of-the-century home was built. The house is 100 years old and the basement door is right in the middle of the back of the house, preventing an attached deck. Another big challenge on this space was that the lot sloped up the hill and away from the house. So what did we do? We excavated and put in retaining walls and build it into the side of the hill, while maintaining integrity of the backyard space and driveway. The homeowners wanted their outdoor space on the same level as the play area with swingset so that they could watch the kids while they relax. Nailed it!
