The outdoor spaces function as an extension of the house and support the family’s casual, sports-oriented lifestyle. The design, for a family of seven, provides spaces for individual privacy and family gatherings. The design challenge was to incorporate a number of sustainable features into the design. The south-facing roof is integrated with a 5-kilowatt photovoltaic system, generating electricity for the home and furnishing emergency backup power. The heating is exclusively radiant with high efficiency boilers partially burning biofuel. Measures taken to produce an efficient building envelope include a drainage plane behind the siding, spray foam insulation, and high performance, insulated window glass.

This was one of those special projects in which we were able to build not only a incredibly insulated and efficient home, but were also able to incorporate a bunch of custom woodworking, metal work, stone work and historical details into the project. We adhered to “Efficiency Vermont’s’ rigorous High Performance Home standards in the construction of this project. In addition, this was a Duplex and as a result required extra attention to special code requirements surrounding multi-family construction. We also tried to recreate the exterior details to match with the historical period of early Vermont.

This new custom house, completed in late 2012, was designed with an accessory dwelling unit to take advantage of an allowance in the single family zoning code in Seattle. The primary dwelling, 1300 square feet on the upper two stories houses a mother and teenager. The accessory dwelling, 750 square feet, provides a leasable smaller space that can be for a tenant or downsizing in the future. Seattle based RE Store began by completely deconstructing the original home so that its salvaged parts could have a new life in other design applications. The new design for the home is modern with a sustainable theme, incorporating a palette of natural materials. The Paperstone, wood and steel staircase connects the open-plan living, dining areas and kitchen to the upstairs bedrooms and open library. Exterior decks extend the main interior living spaces while sliding glass panels allow the primary bedroom to connect. Stylishly visible from all rooms in the open interior living spaces are two complementary objects, both lit from within, a frosted lexan pantry and a slatted reclaimed fir bathroom, with wood sourced from Windfall Lumber. Throughout the home, finishes are simple and minimal: polished concrete flooring, bright-white walls, and formaldehyde-free sapele and maple cabinetry. The main kitchen is outfitted with Ecotop counters and a custom sapele wood island that has large, handle-free pullout drawers on the cooking side and a built-in wine rack on the other. Maximizing storage, a custom built-in apple plywood bench and open wooden box shelves provide extra space. A model of efficiency, the home maximizes the performance of the envelope of the building. The reclaimed fir car decking wrapped around the exterior from Windfall Lumber, creates the rainscreen siding and is sourced locally from a deconstructed warehouse in Tacoma WA. In addition, access to daylight through high-performance glazing, solar preheat for domestic hot water needs, in-floor radiant heating and a green roof created by the owner adds to the efficiency. Dwellist had the honor of collaborating with Shaafi, a Netherlands resident, to bring his vision to life – the construction of his dream house in the idyllic town of Uthamapalyam, near Theni. With a deep-rooted passion for creating a haven that would cater to his aging parents' needs, as well as provide a rental unit and ample space for his own family and his brother. Shaafi entrusted our skilled team to design a residence that would surpass all expectations. Shaafi's utmost concern was the well-being and mobility of his parents within the house. Our team prioritized their needs by incorporating thoughtful features for convenience and accessibility. The design also called for a spacious 3 BHK unit to accommodate both Shaafi's and his brother's families. Considering Shaafi's occasional visits to Uthamapalyam (2 to 3 months per year), we also addressed his desire for rental units on the first floor. The primary focus of our team was on creating a ground-floor residence that prioritized accessibility for elderly. We incorporated barrier-free pathways, spacious doorways, and various amenities to enhance their comfort. Additionally, we designed a rental unit on the first floor, ensuring privacy and independence for tenants while promoting harmonious coexistence with the main residents. The unit was meticulously planned to ensure essential amenities, optimal functionality, and a focus on aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. This residence adorned the cover of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine for the Masters of the Southwest 2010 issue, which inducted Clint Miller into that honored group. The residence’s courtyard design efficiently incorporates a motor court, garages, swimming pool and backyard views to a natural Sonoran wash, while the courtyard’s architectural character resembles a rural European courtyard which has expanded over time. The roof is a multi-colored, two-piece, mission clay tile which incorporates a heavy-stacked eve detail. The home embraces human scale with a deeply recessed multi-paneled front door, framed by a richly detailed concrete surround, which recalls similar details in early 1900’s Spanish motifs. The details and spaces of this home were developed directly from the needs for this family.

This photo highlights a custom storage wall installed during a full house renovation in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood of Vancouver by Arani Construction Inc. The design incorporates floor-to-ceiling cabinetry finished in a sleek white surface to maintain the clean and minimalist aesthetic carried throughout the kitchen. Behind the first two tall cabinet doors, a concealed laundry area was integrated into the cabinetry, allowing the washer and dryer to remain hidden while maintaining easy access. This solution helps maximize functionality without interrupting the visual continuity of the kitchen space. As part of the renovation, all windows in the area were replaced to improve energy efficiency and bring in clearer natural light. The home’s heating system was also upgraded to a boiler-based system with new baseboard heaters installed along the wall, providing efficient and consistent heating throughout the space. This transformation started with a builder grade bathroom and was expanded into a sauna wet room. With cedar walls and ceiling and a custom cedar bench, the sauna heats the space for a relaxing dry heat experience. The goal of this space was to create a sauna in the secondary bathroom and be as efficient as possible with the space. This bathroom transformed from a standard secondary bathroom to a ergonomic spa without impacting the functionality of the bedroom. This project was super fun, we were working inside of a guest bedroom, to create a functional, yet expansive bathroom. We started with a standard bathroom layout and by building out into the large guest bedroom that was used as an office, we were able to create enough square footage in the bathroom without detracting from the bedroom aesthetics or function. We worked with the client on her specific requests and put all of the materials into a 3D design to visualize the new space. By expanding the room slightly it gave us the needed space to relocate the toilet, the vanity and the entrance to the bathroom allowing for the wet room to have the full length of the new space. This bathroom includes a cedar sauna room that is incorporated inside of the shower, the custom cedar bench follows the curvature of the room's new layout and a window was added to allow the natural sunlight to come in from the bedroom. The aromatic properties of the cedar are delightful whether it's being used with the dry sauna heat and also when the shower is steaming the space. In the shower are matching porcelain, marble-look tiles, with architectural texture on the shower walls contrasting with the warm, smooth cedar boards. Also, by increasing the depth of the toilet wall, we were able to create useful towel storage without detracting from the room significantly. This entire project and client was a joy to work with.
