This custom built home was designed for a couple who were nearly retirement and caring for an elderly parent who required the use of a wheel chair. All of the spaces were designed with handicap accessibility, universal design, living-in-place and aging-in-place concepts in mind. The kitchen has both standing and seated prep areas, recessed knee space at the cooktop and bathroom sinks, raised washer and dryer, ergonomically placed appliances, wall oven, hidden microwave, wide openings and doors, easy maneuvering space and a perfect blend of private and public areas. The Transitional design style blends modern and traditional elements in a balanced and pleasing way. An abundance of natural light supported by well designed artificial light sources keeps the home safe, pleasant and inviting.

The 11 ft. island serves as the anchor to the space and provides much needed counter and layout space for the young family. It not only serves as food preparation but doubles as a craft and homework station for the couples young children, reinforcing the kitchens role as the center hub of the house. | DETAILS | Flush white washed baltic birch inside and out sits as a quiet palette when cleaning at dusk especially when the light outside is still sleeping. Over the years as we educate clients around appliances we still work through a rigorous process of programming. Gone is the idea of exposed and oversized appliances. For a busy professional couple less is more, we opted for the a full Miele appliance package for both their #kitchen and #laundry. Loving the new convection steam combi oven where you can steam a duck and brown all in one courtesy of @miele_com. I've seen them cook a 4 course meal for 20 people out of this compact oven. Integrated warming drawer and refrigeration. Much thanks to @caisleydevelopments @somafurniture for helping find solutions around the challenges of seeing how we can install differently. Raising the refrigerator so the freezer drawer can be perfectly aligned with the adjacent warming drawer & countertop line. Raising the hood fan pull out so we could see much better detail and have no exposed trim. And of course flush mount detailing around the gas cooktop so we have minimal raised differences within the working countertop. Soon as gas becomes obsolete we will begin to see induction cooking be standardized until then we try to find ways to incorporate the more traditional means of cooking with gas. When working with compact spaces and especially in #Vancoucer #condoliving, integrating appliances whenever possible is key. And of course @boccidesign for electrical outlets. Our client in Inverallochy near Fraserburgh approached us with a vision for their project. The goal was to not just update their kitchen but also reconfigure the space by taking down partitions for a more fluid layout. For the Inverallochy kitchen, we selected the Nolte Metal range. The main door's Grey Steel colour was paired with an accent in Kansas Oak, offering a harmonious blend of modern and traditional tones. The Silver MatrixArt handleless trims, coupled with integrated lighting, further elevated the design's sleek aesthetic. Our choice of worktops included 20mm Silestone Eternal Serena Suede for the island and Nolte 25mm Kansas Oak for the perimeter. In terms of appliances, we integrated a comprehensive suite of Siemens products: from the single oven and combination microwave to the warming drawer, induction hob, and a unique ceiling extraction unit. The addition of a full-height fridge and a 600mm wine cooler ensured every culinary need was met. Attention to detail was key. We incorporated a Blanco Zia 1 ½ sink in Alumetallic and a Quooker Fusion Square Stainless Steel instant boiling water tap for added functionality. A noteworthy design feature was the extractor built into a ceiling drop box, accentuated by a stepped ledge with dedicated lighting. This project combines two existing studio apartments into a compact 800 sqft. live/work space for a young professional couple in the heart of Chelsea, New York. The design required some creative space planning to meet the Owner’s requested program for an open plan solution with a private master bedroom suite and separate study that also allowed for entertaining small parties, including the ability to provide a sleeping space for guests. The solution was to identify areas of overlap within the program that could be addressed with dual-function custom millwork pieces. A bar-stool counter at the open kitchen folds out to become a bench and dining table for formal entertaining. A custom desk folds down with a murphy bed to convert a private study into a guest bedroom area. A series of pocket door connecting the spaces provide both privacy to the master bedroom area when closed, and the option for a completely open layout when opened. A carefully selected material palette brings a warm, tranquil feel to the space. Reclaimed teak floors run seamlessly through the main spaces to accentuate the open layout. Warm gray lacquered millwork, Centaurus granite slabs, and custom oxidized stainless steel details, give an elegant counterpoint to the natural teak floors. The master bedroom suite and study feature custom Afromosia millwork. The bathrooms are finished with cool toned ceramic tile, custom Afromosia vanities, and minimalist chrome fixtures. This beautiful North Vancouver home belongs to a nature-loving and health-conscious couple, Emma and Vince (names changed), their two young children, and their dog, Jasper. When they contacted us about renovating and furnishing their kitchen and family room, we walked in and saw a world of potential waiting to be uncovered. Before: Larkhall Crescent Home: Like many original North Vancouver homes, the interior was definitely dated. We encountered late ‘80s finishes in powder pink and teal green, old carpet, and a kitchen that wasn’t maximized to suit this family’s modern-day lifestyle. However, the size of the rooms offered us a ton of space with which to get creative. Knowing our clients’ love of cooking, need for work spaces (Emma and Vince both work remotely), and growing family, we developed a design concept that would increase usable space, optimize storage, and create intimacy in this large area. As for the style, we were inspired by their European roots, inventing a new and modern take on “Belgian Farmhouse” style. Now, the home is truly one-of-a-kind. After: Warm & Cozy Family Room: Fresh, bright, and comfortable, this living area has been transformed! We started with the fireplace as a focal point, selecting aged brick tiles for added texture and a crisp wood mantle. The taupe-coloured sectional infuses the room with visual warmth and serves the added purpose of separating the family room from the kitchen. Emma and Vince were also keen on using non-toxic materials in their home, and we were happy to oblige. To meet their needs, we sourced natural wood elements and sought out Canadian-made products - that adhere to high health standards - whenever possible. Look closer at the elements of this space, and you will find this stunning, honeycomb-patterned rug in earthy gold, beige, and charcoal tones. It’s plush to the touch and full of visual texture that brings this room’s colour palette together. We sourced these two-tone chairs with caning, petrified wood side table, black sconces, and botanical prints in greyscale from local artist, Heather Johnston. We topped off the space with this dark wood and rattan console that offers storage facing the kitchen and presents an opportunity to display cherished items. The result is a cozy lounging space brimming with comfort and functionality. It’s perfect for enjoying quality family time, or Emma can simply slide the coffee table away to make room for her morning yoga practice. Now, let’s turn around and give some attention to the kitchen. Do you remember what the original kitchen looked like? If not, scroll back up, because the transformation is shocking… Moody & Welcoming Kitchen for Healthy Living: This kitchen looks very different from how it started, right? Though we didn’t touch any walls, the kitchen has almost doubled in usable space! We created a long, extended island with storage, an outlet for small appliances, and seating for comfortable prep, after-school snacking, or mingling among friends. On the other side of the island, the family has even more storage and an integrated dishwasher within easy reach of the sink, perfect for quick clean-up. From this angle, you can also see the expansive custom Shaker cabinetry in white and the integrated double ovens. These facilitate their cooking experience and gave us the opportunity to add an additional surprise… A coffee garage station and more hidden storage! Keeping these items located along the perimeter allows them to be accessed by the family or their guests without someone getting under the cook’s feet. These are the little details that make everyday life easier and more enjoyable. Moving deeper into the kitchen, the seamless induction cooktop topped with a freestanding concealed hood fan commands attention in a soft yet prominent way. The natural wood accent mirrors the fireplace mantle, and the choice of off-black wood-grain cabinets not only continues our black-and-white colour palette but adds a sense of depth and contrast. The corner sink is located to the right and perfectly positioned with a view of their thriving backyard. To invite more of this family’s character into the space, we mixed metals for interest — matte black, dark pewter, and warm brass — and created open shelves in white oak for their plants and decor. You can also glimpse the tumbled edge of the backsplash tile, which echoes the rustic brick of the fireplace. It adds that farmhouse charm while still feeling timeless and sophisticated. Last but not least, we designed this dining banquette in the bay window (with integrated bench storage, of course), where the family can share a meal together, the kids can do homework, or Emma and Vince can work and enjoy a change of scenery from their offices. Like the other spaces in the home, it was designed to be beautiful, multi-functional, and long-lasting.
