With a busy family who entertain often, presentation was a key for this kitchen – and that meant ample storage in multiple ways. For instance, Jennifer wanted to feature a pre-es- tablished baker’s rack, shelving and one sentimental item – a cutting board, which blends with the warm tones of the shelving. “We wanted the kitchen to look totally open; like IKEA’s Scandinavian styling” she says. “We also wanted one of those hidden drawers in the second drawer for spices.”

Living room - contemporary living room idea in New York

This outdoor living room offers the homeowners a quiet and secluded place to rest and unwind. A neighbouring Black Walnut Tree reduced the overall functional usability of this backyard, and the idea for an outdoor living room was developed. The pocket doors can be screens or can be switched to glass windows when the weather turns colder, offering extended use of the outdoor room during the shoulder seasons.

This East Greenville, PA kitchen remodel was part of an entire first-floor renovation. The homeowners had Meridian Construction design and construct a new kitchen in a completely different location—what you see here used to be the dining room. The homeowner and Meridian worked together to really create a beautiful, cohesive space. For instance, the grey subway tile backsplash was inspired by the home’s original brick wall. The bright gold hardware mixes well with the stainless appliances and fixtures, to create a very on-trend contemporary look. The floating wood shelves frame a sleek, modern downdraft. Renovation is stressful. Wouldn’t it be nice to let someone else oversee product selections, manage day-to-day issues, and bring your project to a successful completion? The owners of a two-family in Arlington recently did just that, flying off to Florida just as we began renovating their first floor unit. Of course, before they left we thoroughly discussed all aspects of the work order, which included renovating the kitchen and bathroom, painting the bedroom, and adding a laundry closet. We reviewed color and material selections, and set up a schedule for regular briefings. A handful of issues did come up. But because we had planned ahead, we were able to resolve them with very little stress for our clients. For instance, the client had chosen a bright yellow paint color for the kitchen walls, but once the new cabinets, countertop, and flooring had been installed, it was clear that yellow would clash. We suggested a more complementary Benjamin Moore Lancaster Whitewash shade instead. In the bathroom, the clients had selected a deep inset mirrored medicine cabinet. But when the wall behind the vanity was opened, it revealed a pipe running up the wall, too close for the inset model. In this small space, a bump-out medicine cabinet would be awkward, so instead we placed a mirror over the sink and two smaller inset cabinets on either side – a solution that pleased the homeowners, who now have his-and-hers storage spaces. Finally, the homeowners had resigned themselves to the fact that the laundry closet would be too small for storing detergent and other needs. However once the units were in place, we realized that a small custom shelf could be built and had it installed to the delight of the homeowners. Photo by Shelly Harrison

We started with a blank slate on this basement project where our only obstacles were exposed steel support columns, existing plumbing risers from the concrete slab, and dropped soffits concealing ductwork on the ceiling. It had the advantage of tall ceilings, an existing egress window, and a sliding door leading to a newly constructed patio. This family of five loves the beach and frequents summer beach resorts in the Northeast. Bringing that aesthetic home to enjoy all year long was the inspiration for the décor, as well as creating a family-friendly space for entertaining. Wish list items included room for a billiard table, wet bar, game table, family room, guest bedroom, full bathroom, space for a treadmill and closed storage. The existing structural elements helped to define how best to organize the basement. For instance, we knew we wanted to connect the bar area and billiards table with the patio in order to create an indoor/outdoor entertaining space. It made sense to use the egress window for the guest bedroom for both safety and natural light. The bedroom also would be adjacent to the plumbing risers for easy access to the new bathroom. Since the primary focus of the family room would be for TV viewing, natural light did not need to filter into that space. We made sure to hide the columns inside of newly constructed walls and dropped additional soffits where needed to make the ceiling mechanicals feel less random. In addition to the beach vibe, the homeowner has valuable sports memorabilia that was to be prominently displayed including two seats from the original Yankee stadium. For a coastal feel, shiplap is used on two walls of the family room area. In the bathroom shiplap is used again in a more creative way using wood grain white porcelain tile as the horizontal shiplap “wood”. We connected the tile horizontally with vertical white grout joints and mimicked the horizontal shadow line with dark grey grout. At first glance it looks like we wrapped the shower with real wood shiplap. Materials including a blue and white patterned floor, blue penny tiles and a natural wood vanity checked the list for that seaside feel. A large reclaimed wood door on an exposed sliding barn track separates the family room from the game room where reclaimed beams are punctuated with cable lighting. Cabinetry and a beverage refrigerator are tucked behind the rolling bar cabinet (that doubles as a Blackjack table!). A TV and upright video arcade machine round-out the entertainment in the room. Bar stools, two rotating club chairs, and large square poufs along with the Yankee Stadium seats provide fun places to sit while having a drink, watching billiards or a game on the TV. Signed baseballs can be found behind the bar, adjacent to the billiard table, and on specially designed display shelves next to the poker table in the family room. Thoughtful touches like the surfboards, signage, photographs and accessories make a visitor feel like they are on vacation at a well-appointed beach resort without being cliché.

Completely enclosed in glass, this custom wine cellar in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, California, is sure to turn some heads. Located directly off of the kitchen and dining room, this custom wine room / glass wine cellar / modern wine cellar / contemporary wine cellar holds upwards of 200 bottles. Glass, Metal, and stone are all utilized in our favorite combination for a gorgeous contemporary masterpiece. Double deep metal wine racks / metal wine racking is utilized here, placed a few feet off of the ground to allow for potential case storage space on the tile below. Black metal wine racking was also chosen, as opposed to silver metal wine racks in order to really make the space pop. The glass here is single pane. Master Wine Cellar Builders and Design Build team at Vintage Cellars recommend using dual paned, thermally insulated glass in wine cellars to minimize potential for condensation, as well as making sure that your wine cellar is able to maintain proper temperature and humidity constantly. Single pane glass simply does not have a high enough R Value of insulation, though it can make the space look a bit more clean and elegant. The cooling system was recessed and ducted into the ceiling to ensure the minimalist look was achieved for this wine cellar / glass wine cellar / modern wine room / modern glass wine cellar / modern glass wine room / contemporary wine room. This home beautifully blends modern, contemporary, and traditional design features. Wood, marble, stone, glass, and metal all come together beautifully to make this space cool and sleek, but also warm and homey. Here in Newport Coast, Newport Beach, Orange County, California, modern / contemporary architecture is THE design trend. In a home which mixes the best of traditional and contemporary, this custom wine cellar / custom wine room fits like a glove. Double sided glass walls enclose this custom wine cellar, with one side visible from the living room, the other from the dining room. Floor to ceiling black metal wine racks line each wall - dual sided as to maximize horizontal label forward design and display. The cooling unit was an RM Coil, traditionally mounted into the racks - but in this instance was recessed into the ceiling. The cooling unit and heat load calculation took into account that there were two large walls of glass here - knowing fully that there would be substantial heat loss through the large single panes on either end. Within the room, beige stone accentuates the contemporary / modern look and matches stunningly with the color scheme and other design features in the surrounding rooms as well. In this instance, the owner asked for a modern, clean, and functional aesthetic that would be family-friendly, while also allowing him to entertain. We worked around the owner's artwork by Ryan Fugate in order to choose a neutral but also sophisticated palette of blues, greys, and green for the entire home. Metallic accents create a more modern feel that plays off of the hardware already in the home. The result is a comfortable and bright home where everyone can relax at the end of a long day.
