A conservatory can be added to even quite narrow lots and small dark houses. In this instances we open up the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, and opened up both to the new rear conservatory. In doing so we brought much-needed light into dark interiors, and established a positive link from those interiors to the terrace and garden beyond.

This East Greenville, PA kitchen remodel was part of an entire first-floor renovation. The homeowners had Meridian Construction design and construct a new kitchen in a completely different location—what you see here used to be the dining room. The homeowner and Meridian worked together to really create a beautiful, cohesive space. For instance, the grey subway tile backsplash was inspired by the home’s original brick wall. The bright gold hardware mixes well with the stainless appliances and fixtures, to create a very on-trend contemporary look. The floating wood shelves frame a sleek, modern downdraft. The combination of contemporary style with natural finishes really give this kitchen a luxurious yet homey feel. Check out how big of a change this kitchen remodel was in our Before & After Gallery. These highly attractive bespoke built-in bookcases and matching desk were handcrafted by Claude Clémaron for a period-style home office and library in Putney, southwest London. Traditionally constructed and designed fitted furniture like this has incredible charm and creates a warm, homely and calming atmosphere. Though traditional in style, the fitted furniture has been customised to discreetly integrate modern technology, cabling and wiring into the design. The L-shaped cabinet, for instance, cleverly houses an air conditioning unit.
A bespoke home office full of character
Every detail is detail. From the antique bronze doorknobs to open the cupboard doors to the beautifully crafted, solid oak library ladder to reach the highest shelves.
Handcrafted and hand finished for longevity and looks
The fitted cabinets have been spraypainted in Hardwick White by Farrow and Ball; a timeless light neutral colour with a rich, chalky grey-green hue. Oak has been used to line the upper open bookcases. The natural wood adds a visual contrast to the painted finish of the cabinetry and will be more resilient to wear and tear. Painted shelves can be more prone to chipping and scratching when in frequent use.
Decorative woodworking and period design elements
Traditionally constructed and designed, this bespoke built-in cabinetry features an authentic beaded inset detail on the cupboard doors, as well as distinctive fluting, all adding further dimension and elegance to the high end furniture. The bespoke matching handcrafted desk features integrated storage and a curved right hand detailed panel. The curved edge softens the look and feel of the desk. A smooth skiver leather inlay, made from sheepskin, is a traditional feature that provides a comfortable surface for writing or using a mouse. The inlay’s natural texture and warm tan colour enhance the desk’s visual appeal and creates a pleasant tactile experience.

Large craftsman beige one-story concrete fiberboard exterior home idea in Portland with a metal roof

These homeowners who were downsizing to a patio home in Floyds Fork area came to us after they had made all of their selections in paint colors, fixtures and finishes and asked us to put together a comprehensive plan for their new home including space planning, furniture selections, and finishing touches in window treatments, rugs, accent lighting and accessories. Although this is a well laid out floor plan, we asked a lot of questions to make sure each area functioned for the homeowners as well as looked good. For instance, the floor plan included a Dining Area and small Breakfast Nook. The homeowners knew they would spend most of their time at the island, so we invested in quality custom bar stools, we selected fully upholstered chairs for the dining area which will be used, and turned the Breakfast Nook into a seating area for morning coffee or afternoon reading. That took care of the functional, now for the fun. Our color palette comprised of creams, grays, tans and mustard yellow is so pleasing. We kept our furnishings neutral while popping our color with window treatments and accessories. Please note we used 3 different fabrics on the 3 different windows in the Living Area. As long as the fabrics coordinate and support your color palette, you can use multiple fabrics in the same space. Since our palette was neutral, we made sure our finishing touches had a lot of texture and interest.
There is so much to look at and love in the large open space, and this is definitely one of my favorite color palettes. And as striking as this home looks, it is laid out so well. Every piece of furniture fits and functions perfectly. This is visual proof of the importance of a comprehensive plan. Enjoy!

Completely enclosed in glass, this custom wine cellar in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, California, is sure to turn some heads. Located directly off of the kitchen and dining room, this custom wine room / glass wine cellar / modern wine cellar / contemporary wine cellar holds upwards of 200 bottles. Glass, Metal, and stone are all utilized in our favorite combination for a gorgeous contemporary masterpiece.
Double deep metal wine racks / metal wine racking is utilized here, placed a few feet off of the ground to allow for potential case storage space on the tile below. Black metal wine racking was also chosen, as opposed to silver metal wine racks in order to really make the space pop.
The glass here is single pane. Master Wine Cellar Builders and Design Build team at Vintage Cellars recommend using dual paned, thermally insulated glass in wine cellars to minimize potential for condensation, as well as making sure that your wine cellar is able to maintain proper temperature and humidity constantly. Single pane glass simply does not have a high enough R Value of insulation, though it can make the space look a bit more clean and elegant.
The cooling system was recessed and ducted into the ceiling to ensure the minimalist look was achieved for this wine cellar / glass wine cellar / modern wine room / modern glass wine cellar / modern glass wine room / contemporary wine room.
This home beautifully blends modern, contemporary, and traditional design features. Wood, marble, stone, glass, and metal all come together beautifully to make this space cool and sleek, but also warm and homey.
Here in Newport Coast, Newport Beach, Orange County, California, modern / contemporary architecture is THE design trend. In a home which mixes the best of traditional and contemporary, this custom wine cellar / custom wine room fits like a glove.
Double sided glass walls enclose this custom wine cellar, with one side visible from the living room, the other from the dining room. Floor to ceiling black metal wine racks line each wall - dual sided as to maximize horizontal label forward design and display.
Vintage Cellars, master wine cellar builders out of San Diego, California, were able to design a beautiful looking and equally utilitarian cellar here, fitting over 675 wine bottles with ease.
The cooling unit was an RM Coil, traditionally mounted into the racks - but in this instance was recessed into the ceiling. The cooling unit and heat load calculation took into account that there were two large walls of glass here - knowing fully that there would be substantial heat loss through the large single panes on either end.
Within the room, beige stone accentuates the contemporary / modern look and matches stunningly with the color scheme and other design features in the surrounding rooms as well. A wine cellar / wine room / wine vault / wine wall / wine closet / custom wine cellar / custom wine wall / custom wine room / custom wine closet / custom wine vault / custom wine storage room like this is a real jaw dropper when incorporated into the main living areas in the home. Wine as art is a beautiful thing.

When people think of remodeling their homes, they often immediately consider starting with rooms like the dining area, living room, or basement – rooms where the most amount of people spend the most amount of time. While those rooms are important, recent remodeling trends are pointing toward the popularity of re-creating a more private place – the master bath.
In fact, we are in the midst of The Year of the Master Bath. Current home improvement practices show that, not only is redoing your master bath a fun and stylish choice, but it also is a wise way to add value to your home.
For homes built in the 1990’s with master baths over 200 square feet in size, now is the ideal time to remodel and upgrade to a more efficient, stylish, and worth-while setup. Most homes built during this time period were completed with a typical master bath that included a large jetted tub, and a separate small shower. Both of these elements are quickly becoming recognizable as features of the past, and are being replaced by new and improved technologies.
For instance, many homeowners have taken it upon themselves to remove the large jetted bath, and replace it with a free standing tub. These free standing tubs allow for the room to open up in a more modern fashion, and provide endless style and aesthetic choices. Homeowners are also expanding their small showers to create a luxury environment. By pushing out walls to make more shower space, adding skylights and hinged doors, or even designing an accent tile pattern, homeowners are able to take their simple shower and turn it into a relaxing space that rivals even the best spa.
The remodeling of a master bath even allows for homeowners to get creative with storage space and style. Many emerging trends include higher vanity height, and even additional built-in towers with extra outlets so that no one is without power while curling their hair or charging a razor.
When you take the time to customize your master bath, you will add a level of value to your home that you can experience each and every day, and that will also add to your home’s worth in the long run. Join in on The Year of the Master Bath, and enjoy your improved space for decades to come!

Custom sliding barn doors are a signature project at Zoltan Design Co. The distinctive, upscale look is a stylish solution for cramped spaces while doubling as a beautiful piece of wall art. When a client considers space-saving options but also has a desire to create a chic atmosphere, custom sliding barn doors are a ZDC interior design staple for three reasons:
1. ELEGANCE AND TIMELESSNESS
Nothing serves as a better focal point than a sliding barn door. Mixing the right door with the right colors throughout the space makes décor express itself in all the right places. Zoltan Design’s custom craftsmanship will give a barn door the character it needs to stand out, which explains why it’s one of the most popular accent pieces in interior design.
2. FUNCTIONALITY THAT IS OUTSIDE OF THE ORDINARY
This style choice is an elegant way to save space due to its sliding function. For instance, this feature is creatively used to conceal laundry rooms or to hide electronics during entertaining. A custom sliding barn door is used in a multitude of ways to keep your home functional while embracing glamor and comfort.
3. WE HAVE A PASSION FOR AUTHENTICITY
Zoltan Design’s custom sliding barn doors are authentic and American-made. One of our greatest passions is working with wood, which is why we created BARN, our line of custom furniture and barn doors. It is a privilege to carefully select recycled beams, barnwood and building materials from all over the country to craft beautiful pieces for our clients.
ZOLTAN DESIGN’S CUSTOM SLIDING BARN DOORS
Christopher Ritchie, Creative Director, is one of the area’s most sought-after talents, working with clients from concept to completion. As one of our most in-demand projects, each barn door is unique, refined, and exquisitely curated for your space. Our custom sliding barn doors adorn clients’ walls as pieces of art to elevate elegance in their home. From the historic wood, to the details of the carefully crafted nail heads, Zoltan crafts a piece that reflects refined tastes.
As part of ZDC’s trademark style, the barn doors are American-made and homegrown. These storied pieces celebrate old world vintage with wood that originates from 19th-century barns across the country. Once the high-quality wood is salvaged, it is reclaimed into the lavish design that suspends in a home.
THE PROCESS
Once the space is evaluated, clients receive detailed drawings, and CAD (computer-aided design) drawings, which reveals realistic 3-D layouts of a barn door before the installation process begins. Although each project is highly individualized, a custom sliding barn door will enter its final phase in six to eight weeks
As part of this delicate process, Zoltan Design Co.’s team works with our clients throughout design and manufacturing, all the way to installation. With the ability to choose from a variety of hardware and brackets, as well as the option to incorporate glass, we create a personalized piece to enhance your essence. If you’re interested in learning more about custom sliding barn doors or if you would like to request a consultation, please contact us today.
