Reno's Circular Whirlwind
Reno, Nevada
Hain Enterprises
Late in 2013 in the pastoral horse country just west of Reno, Nevada, a homeowner challenged his contractor to design a patio environment incorporating as many circles as possible that would flow seamlessly from one to another and create a unique visual experience for family and guests. The contractor took up the challenge. He and his crews designed and installed one-of-a-kind patios, walls and planting areas, utilizing concrete paver circle kits. The kits spin off one another and linked two separate patio areas and adjacent walkways, without interrupting the flow of each circle. One of many design challenges of this project was deciding how to incorporate the existing drains into the design. The solution: use the drain grates as centers for the circles. Another challenge was determining how to continue the arc of the varying size circles onto and through the connecting pathways. To accomplish this, the contractor installed only curvilinear courses of pavers that appear to run off the pathways and rejoin later. In total, the contractor used 14 paver circle kits and approximately 3,600 square feet of pavement. Included in this project were freestanding seat walls and accent planting areas, creating the outdoor entertainment environment the customer envisioned.

Reheat mode:
Reheat mode uses steam and hot air to rehydrate food gently. Using convection and the right amount of moisture, Reheat mode warms one to four pans of food evenly and without drying with a temperature range from 210°F to 300°F.
Auto Steam Bake mode:
By heating with steam first, then using convection heat to finish, bagels, breads, buns, rolls and pastries acquire a tender interior and a natural shine without the need for brushing with an egg wash. Auto Steam Bake mode temperatures range from 210°F to 445°F.
Convection mode:
A fan circulates hot air from a heating element at the back of the oven to distribute heat evenly around food for consistent results and browning. Convection mode temperatures range from 85°F to 445°F.
Convection Humid mode:
In Convection Humid mode, a heating element at the back of the oven produces heat and oven ventilation is sealed so that moisture produced during cooking remains in the oven. Convection Humid temperatures range from 85°F to 445°F.
Convection Steam mode:
Use Convection Steam for any foods you want to be tender inside and roasted or crisped outside. Convection steam mode temperatures range from 85°F to 445°F.
Gourmet mode:
Gourmet mode uses a climate sensor to adjust time, temperature and humidity for ideal results with no guesswork.
Slow Roast mode:
Slow Roast mode is an ultimate convenience. Insert the probe into your prepared meat, select a slow roast setting for the dish you're preparing, tell the oven what time you want it done, and come home to a perfectly cooked meal.
Recipes mode:
Use Recipes mode and the collection of built-in recipes to harness the power of the oven's many different cooking modes to easily cook entire meals from appetizers and entrees to desserts.
Keep Warm mode:
The combination of convection and steam heat preserves food’s taste, texture, looks and quality so every bite is as delicious as if it were fresh from the oven. Keep multiple dinner plates warm at once, making staggered meal times more convenient.
Temperature probe:
The temperature probe alerts you when your dish has reached the desired temperature, eliminating guesswork when preparing roasts and other meats.
Multiple pans and rack positions:
Two included pans can be placed in any of four rack positions. Both pans are stainles steel – one solid, and the other with a perforated bottom that is particularly well-suited for dishes prepared in Steam mode.
Delayed start:
What time would you like your dish to be ready? Simply program in a time. The oven turns on at the right moment and adjusts the cooking process so the food is ready to serve precisely when you want it.

It was important not to interrupt the dynamic of this home's historic Church Hill neighborhood, and so all the exterior changes were kept to the back of the house, with the front remaining mostly unchanged.
Although the front of the house doesn’t give away its secrets, the back of the house is an unexpected but delightful surprise. Embracing the new rear addition is the home’s original brick wall. Architectural design as well as Commission of Architectural Review requirements put a lot of emphasis on keeping the original masonry intact, which was no small feat. It took a lot of planning, some delicate demolition and talented carpentry to ensure this piece of history remained.
In addition to the brick wall, other original aspects of the home were carefully preserved including the windows, floors and much of the trim work. Meanwhile all new, modern plumbing and fixtures were installed and custom cabinetry with inset routed “handles” were fabricated by Polosko Woodworks. Inside the home is even more appreciation of the original masonry with exposed brick walls in the primary bath.

In this expansive Argyle estate kitchen remodel, one island simply wasn't enough. We designed and built a stunning Double Island configuration to separate the "work zone" from the "entertainment zone." This project showcases the full power of The Design House's vertical integration—coordinating complex stone fabrication, custom cabinetry, and structural beam installation under one single contract.
The "One-Stop" Execution:
The Showpiece Island: The primary island features a massive slab of Fantasy Brown Stone with dramatic movement. Because we own Stonemeyer Granite, we handled the delicate vein-matching and fabrication in-house, ensuring the natural flow of the stone wasn't interrupted by poor seams.
The Prep Island: To balance the drama, the secondary island features a clean, durable Pure White Quartz, providing a bulletproof surface for food prep and serving.
Architectural Details: We installed exposed cedar beams to draw the eye upward to the vaulted ceilings, adding warmth to the modern black-and-white palette.
Flooring: Large-format porcelain tile in a soft gray connects the open-concept space, installed by our expert tile setters to ensure perfectly level grout lines across the massive span.
Materials Used:
Islands: Fantasy Brown (Main), Pure White Quartz (Secondary)
Cabinetry: Custom Shaker in "Sherwin Williams Snowbound" (Perimeter) and "Iron Ore" (Main Island)
Flooring: 24x48 Matte Porcelain Tile
If you need a luxury kitchen contractor in Argyle who can handle structural changes and complex stone work without the wait, contact The Design House today.

Close up of a series of hipped dormers and chimney flashing on an architectural asphalt roof replacement project. For this expansive and historic Connecticut summer residence, we specified GAF Camelot II laminated architectural asphalt shingles in Antique Slate to replicate the look of a traditional slate roof (but at 10 percent of the weight). This installation featured many protrusions, ridges, and valleys which had to be navigated. While our work was interrupted by an unforecast last season gale storm, we were able to get this job done in the span of five working days.

A soon to be installed kitchen valance. This exquisitely crafted kitchen valance is worth every note in detail. Notice the fabric wrapped crown molding. If you zoom in for detail the lines of the molding still show. It is a beautiful custom detail along with the contrast pleats and cording detail. Note, the fabric motif is perfectly executed and repeated without interruption.

Forming a corner shower included framing 54-inch high partial walls on each side of the framless shower door. The pivot shower door allows the user to open the door inward or outward and has a towel bar installed on the outside. Wall tiles in 24"X24" complete the surrounding shower and tub walls. This shower offers a smartly contrasting vertical accent in mosaic glass tiles which match the tub deck face. There is a tiled shower niche which does not interrupt the tiled pattern in shower design.

Among the new surfaces are shaker style cherry cabinets with a clear finish, soft closing doors & drawers, and furniture grade domestic maple interiors. The cabinetry was trimmed and carefully installed by our CRC artisans and made by Signature Cabinetry & Design. The countertops are a gorgeous cut of Crema Bordeaux granite slab, fabricated and installed by Marble Fino. The appliances are beautiful KitchenAid stainless steel models the homeowner purchased from Pearson's Appliance, and installed by us.
The floor is a new wood look vinyl product by DuChateau Floors called Vinyl Deluxe recommended by Jim Pitcher, Owner of CRC. This is not your mother's vinyl floor! This is cutting edge technology. Can you tell the difference? There are astonishingly similar alternatives to hardwood flooring available today. Banned from kitchens and bathrooms no more! You too can have the look of hardwood without the drawbacks of wood products in wet and high traffic areas.
Lighting in the kitchen was enhanced by LED ceiling can lights and under cabinet LED strip lights. Notice there are no visible outlets interrupting the backsplash. We tucked outlets under the upper cabinets giving plenty of power where the homeowner needs it without the outlets being visible. Little details make a big difference.
