A transformation inspired by the owner’s love of modern architecture, art and color (and the adjacent sand, rock, water, and the northwest landscape), the Indianola House sought to bring the soul of a home to a colorless muted box. The original house was a drab 1990’s-era box with no personality or presence sited on a beautiful secluded bay, facing water and island views, northwest of the City of Seattle. The existing mono-colored stucco-clad exterior and pyramidal glass-block openings had led the neighborhood to dub the structure, unflatteringly, “The Miami Vice House”. Rhodes Architecture’s Residential Architects careful use of natural light, rich, collaged finishes and ability to open the house to gardens, beach, and outdoor gathering was critical to the design. The house soon became “The Gallery”. The original home’s grey stucco exterior made the house seem both large and featureless; the introduction of no-maintenance exterior materials that collage and complement each other was a goal of the homeowner and the Seattle Architects who teamed up for this residential design. The bloated scale of the house cried out for the establishment and definition of the parts of the structure, a breaking down of the home’s form and its apparent bland size. Living, sleeping, and bathing areas that started as staid spaces were in need of opening to the natural environment with additions of large doors, folding glass walls and useable balconies were crucial to each space having a dialogue with the outdoors. The owner’s extensive art collection was highlighted and became the focus of interior places, well-lit naturally and through a new lighting system. Energy use and sustainable systems were a key component of the design which used high-efficacy lighting, better cladding on a rain-screen system, high-efficiency doors and windows, new insulation and weather barriers, and which added a photovoltaic-generated electrical system. The contemporary design sought to integrate all of these systems, materials, and finishes into a seamless whole that lent interest and drama to a residence which was previously lusterless. How radically this house was transformed is evident in the exteriors, gardens and the natural spaces the house now opens to, as well as the gallery-like interiors. This home is a stunning testament to what is possible “before-and-after” when remade by Rhodes Architecture + Light. The clients are an older couple with long professional and political careers, a love of art and a clear desire to connect with the Northwest environment and enliven their daily lives with spaces full of color and natural light. Rhodes Architecture + Light was hired in 2019 to add new exteriors and interiors, natural light, larger openings to beach and bay, seismic and foundation upgrades to the home, and to infuse life into the house through the re-use of existing space and varied materials, color, textures, and lighting. The only actual change to the exterior “shell” of the house was the introduction of a low “gull-wing” roof with wood soffits above the central atrium space, to add drama and bring natural light into the entry gallery space. Interior spaces, including bedrooms and bathrooms, were re-planned and opened to each other, to greater natural light, to roof decks, and to the incredible views and sea-side environment. The Builder, Fairbank Construction Company of Bainbridge Island, Washington, met the challenge of the design, first completely deconstructing the finishes inside and out, then precisely interlocking new claddings, windows and doors, cabinetry, finishes and a new gull-wing central roof in a beautiful transformation. The construction was total, thorough, and very detailed, resulting a house that, far from seeming a “remodeling”, is far more present and fitting to the owner’s lives and the natural environment than the house we started with.

For a small family in the Boston suburbs, their modest sized home was just the right size. But with some smart changes, they wondered if it could be more enjoyable. Working with architect Joseph S. Artley, we came up with a number of solutions: • To make the kitchen a more comfortable work and gathering space, a bay window was removed and the kitchen itself bumped out slightly to allow for the introduction of an expansive island, as well as additional countertop and cabinetry. • The first floor half-bathroom was relocated to the end of the entry hall. This allowed us to connect the kitchen with what had been a three-season porch. • That three-season porch was properly heated and remodeled as a sunny breakfast nook: the perfect spot for the family to gather in the mornings. • Near the entry to the breakfast nook, an existing electrical box could not be moved. To conceal it, we suggested an oversized family bulletin board, which we provided as a gift to the homeowners. Now, it offers a great spot to catch up on the day’s activities and enjoy some family artwork while heading in for breakfast. • This family loves to read and they asked for custom built in bookshelves in the living room that would look original to the home and match existing shelving on the other side of the room. • The den is a favorite spot for the family to watch movies and play games, but the room, which had also been a three season porch prior to an earlier renovation, was drafty in the winter and hot in the summer. We introduced new, energy efficient windows and insulation throughout, resulting in a much more inviting and cozy room. Today, after barely increasing the footprint of the home, the family has a new breakfast room, a usable den, a larger and more inviting kitchen, and a better-situated first-floor bath. Designer Dea Attar accomplished this with her Orleans living room project. This client had already begun the project and needed a designer to help finish the room. She wanted to keep the sofa, new rug and artwork and work around them to complete the look. The room is used occasionally for socializing purposes. As it is the first room you see when you come in to the house, the goal was to give it the WOW factor! The designer’s concept and vision: Inspired by the vibrant colours in the artwork, Dea planned to use the blues and greens as accents. She wanted the bigger pieces such as the furniture to remain neutral in order to make the accents pop. Dea selected a chair-and-a-half that had similar arms to the sofa and mixed the two styles together. Since the room was to be used occasionally, the chair-and-a-half could fit 2 people in a pinch but wouldn’t overwhelm the space. A small armless chair was introduced in the opposite corner of the room to create a circle of seating and accommodate socializing and conversations. She selected a fresh paisley pattern that combines the greens and blues together. The after: The result, a happy room with bright colours and strong accents that express exactly what the client had requested. Dea played with patterns of different scales and proportions to create a nice balance in the room. The multiple pillows used tied the mixed pieces together to complement the design and the accent colours. The introduction of mirrors created elegant reflections and made the room brighter. The chest and photo combo are a statement and a conversation starter that catch the eye of anyone entering the home.

Karol and Matthew embarked on a journey to transform their master bathroom in their 2000' home. The vision was to modernize the space, enhance functionality to their needs, and incorporate luxurious features for a contemporary spa-like experience. The project began with a thorough demolition, clearing out the old to make room for new windows, shower, cabinets, countertops, and various other updates, setting the stage for a complete transformation. A new Milgard slider window was installed to replace the window, enhancing the natural light and aesthetics of the space while allowing natural air flow if desired. The dry-off area, formerly occupied by the bathtub, was reimagined with regular floor tile and continued shower tile walls for the window wall, highlighting the attention to detail and customization of the space. Multiple towel hooks were added along with a towel bar for ample storage. Picket tiles in the Paloma Cotton finish were chosen for the shower and vanity accent wall. Then, for another fun geometric touch, Diamond in White were selected for the shower flooring and accent tile in their new over-sized storage niches. The vanity area looks like an entirely different bathroom with the introduction of Sollid Designer Series cabinets in the Scottsdale door style with the warm Honey finish on alder wood. These beautiful cabinets were paired with Calacatta Luccia Quartz countertops, new storage mirrors, and vanity lights completely changing the vibe of their vanity to a fun and modern area with maximized storage.
