The Lakota Residence occupies a spectacular 10-acre site in the hills above northwest Portland, Oregon. The residence consists of a main house of nearly 10,000 sf and a caretakers cottage/guest house of 1,200 sf over a shop/garage. Both have been sited to capture the four mountain Cascade panorama plus views to the city and the Columbia River gorge while maintaining an internal privacy. The buildings are set in a highly manicured and refined immediate site set within a largely forested environment complete with a variety of wildlife. Successful business people, the owners desired an elegant but "edgey" retreat that would accommodate an active social life while still functional as "mission control" for their construction materials business. There are days at a time when business is conducted from Lakota. The three-level main house has been benched into an edge of the site. Entry to the middle or main floor occurs from the south with the entry framing distant views to Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. Conceived as a ruin upon which a modernist house has been built, the radiused and largely opaque stone wall anchors a transparent steel and glass north elevation that consumes the view. Recreational spaces and garage occupy the lower floor while the upper houses sleeping areas at the west end and office functions to the east. Obsessive with their concern for detail, the owners were involved daily on site during the construction process. Much of the interiors were sketched on site and mocked up at full scale to test formal concepts. Eight years from site selection to move in, the Lakota Residence is a project of the old school process.

The interior of this home blurs the line between modern and traditional, forging a relaxed living environment. The arched, copper porch, which features Eldorado Stone’s modern LedgeCut33, creates an inviting presentation with its continuous linear pattern displayed throughout this residence. Over the years, my jobs have involved collaborating with homeowners, business owners, architects and contractors analyzing and designing plans for new construction and remodels, renovating kitchens, designing fireplaces, cabinetry, lighting, window treatments and furnishings. But even more important than the design, I believe the ability to communicate all the ideas and concepts of the design to the various trades people involved is critical to achieving the end results my clients and I envision. When Joe Germann founded Motorhead Extraordinaire in 2005, his shop was your typical motorhead shop – lots of hand-me-downs, "way too many" piles of junk, and always too much work going on. Joe used the shop for full frame-up restorations that involved engine work, body work, painting, etc. – your typical hard-core home based restoration shop. The shop was a 24' x 32' building with a cathedral ceiling and was carved up into two car bays (one with a lift), and a bay for the workshop area. The office was located in a spare room in the house, only big enough for one person to work in at a time. Typical of 15 year old shops, it had a collection of everything in every corner – "your basic junk shop." Joe knew he needed a shop and home office to better meet his needs and to be a reflection of his business philosophies. His goals were simple: 1. Upgrade the workshop to the 21st century and make it more efficient for the space he had and the type of work he likes to do in there 2. Add a new office to run the business out of 3. Make it an enjoyable place to hang out to swill a few beers and smoke a few good cigars! Mission accomplished. Joe added a 12' x 22' office addition and remodeled the existing garage/workshop area. (Trying to simultaneously work on restorations – a '71 Corvette and a Raven – as well as doing engine work on his Wild Child drag car was a challenge, to say the least.) Both the new shop and office are fully furnished with a host of Lista storage and workspace products. “ The Lista workspaces are simply awesome and work out so well for us. ” Joe raves, "The Lista workspaces are simply awesome and work out so well for us. The desks are at a 35-1/2" workbench height so they are comfortable to use either standing up or sitting down in a Lista work chair. My workspace uses a Nexus frame system with 16" overhead cabinets and a large double hinged door storage cabinet with roll-out trays, which we use to store product catalogs and other heavy stacks of literature. In my wife Isabelle's work area, we used 12' of standard overhead cabinets fastened directly to the wall and a large 12' long double workspace. She has two heavy-duty Lista file cabinets, and believe me they are loaded up and work flawlessly!" Joe is a big fan of Lista products, which he sells through his business. "Well-thought-out is an understatement. Lista workspace solutions are among the most functional, highest quality, and best value available today. In keeping with the historic nature of the home, white painted custom cabinets with shaker style doors (that echo the paneling in the rest of the house) replaced dated cabinets in the kitchen. An island with seating for five people allows guests to sit and chat with the cook, and the kids to be more involved during busy breakfasts. A custom buffet cabinet was designed to echo traditional free standing cabinets and houses the coffee maker, toaster and breakfast items, which are neatly tucked away behind doors when not in use. We strived to preserve the unique features of this home, with new items such as period style light fixtures, and trim details that match the rest of the home. The space is complete with historically accurate finishes like marble countertops.

This project involved a complete removal of the primary bathroom and replacement of all finishes. As part of the process we created a new doorway opening into a private office beyond, and an enlarged storage area where a small linen closet had been previously. Ceilings were clipped to eliminate busy wall angles and the shower was raised to create loft in the space.
