Recently, TaskRabbit challenged a group of 10 Taskers to build a Tiny House in the middle of Manhattan in just 72 hours – all for a good cause.
Building a fully outfitted tiny house in 3 days was a tall order – a build like this often takes months – but we set out to prove the power of collaboration, showing the kind of progress that can be made when people come together, bringing their best insights, skills and creativity to achieve something that seems impossible.
It was quite a week. New York was wonderful (and quite lovely, despite a bit of rain), our Taskers were incredible, and TaskRabbit’s Tiny House came together in record time, due to the planning, dedication and hard work of all involved.
A Symbol for Change
The TaskRabbit Tiny House was auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to our partner, Community Solutions, a national nonprofit helping communities take on complex social challenges – issues like homelessness, unemployment and health inequity – through collaboration and creative problem solving. This Tiny House was envisioned as a small symbol of the change that is possible when people have the right tools and opportunities to work together. Through our three-day build, our Taskers proved that amazing things can happen when we put our hearts into creating substantive change in our communities.
The Winning Bid
We’re proud to report that we were able to raise $26,600 to support Community Solutions’ work. Sarah, a lovely woman from New Hampshire, placed the winning bid – and it’s nice to know our tiny home is in good hands.
#ATinyTask: Behind the Scenes
The Plans
A lot of time and effort went into making sure this Tiny Home was as efficient, cozy and welcoming as possible. Our master planners, designer Lesley Morphy and TaskRabbit Creative Director Scott Smith, maximized every square inch in the little house with comfort and style in mind, utilizing a lofted bed, lofted storage, a floor-to-ceiling tiled shower, a compost toilet, and custom details throughout. There’s a surprising amount of built-in storage in the kitchen, while a conscious decision was made to keep the living space open so you could actually exist comfortably without feeling cramped.
The Build
Our Taskers worked long, hard shifts while our team made sure they were well fed, hydrated and in good spirits. The team brought amazing energy and we couldn’t be prouder of the way they worked together. Stay tuned, as we’ll be highlighting more of our Tiny House Taskers’ stories in coming days – they were so great that we want to make sure all of you get to know them better.
The Final Product
Behold, the completed Tiny House! For more photos, be sure to check out our Facebook page.
This was an incredibly inspiring project, and we really enjoyed watching the Tiny House come to life right in the middle of Manhattan. It was amazing to see what our Taskers are capable of, and we’re so glad we were able to support Community Solutions and help fight homelessness, unemployment and health inequity with #ATinyTask.

Extensive Kitchen, living area remodel complete!
There was a lot of demo, reframing and rearranging involved in this beautiful remodel to get it to it’s final result. We first had to remove every surface including several walls to open up the Kitchen to the living room and what is now a bar area where our clients can relax, play pool and watch TV. Off the Kitchen is a new laundry with extra storage and countertop space. In removing the walls in the kitchen, we were able to create a large island, move the appliances around and created a new open concept living space. The cabinets in the bar area, laundry and Kitchen perimeter are a white shaker style cabinet with the Island being a separate beautiful Grey color. All of the cabinets were topped with a gorgeous Vittoria white quartz countertop. The Kitchen was then completed with the stand out Grey Glazed Brick backsplash. Finally, the flooring! The home was also updated with a new 12x48 Aequa Tur wood look tile. We created a custom design with this tile at the entry way and transitioned between rooms with a soldier pattern. Lots of detail went into creating this beautiful space, let us know if you have any questions!

In the Dining Room: we selected a gorgeous wool rug, featuring shades of cobalt blue and deep rusty orange and then painted the walls Salty Dog (a classic bright navy). The spunky light fixture is a focal point and the farm table easily seats eight hungry friends.

This project was full outdoor living environment, what some would call a “staycation” backyard. A hybrid pool had been installed the previous year but now the living and entertaining spaces needed to be constructed. Consisting of a deck, two patio spaces with walkways connecting all, a couple retaining walls, fencing, landscaping and a new sliding door. The retaining walls were needed to allow for the patio space around to pool. The patio space was divided into two sections, one the wet zone by the pool and the second being the handout zone. This also allowed for a smaller area of fence with a clean transition. The deck constructed using Azek building products provided the style they wanted without having to worry about maintenance. With the elevation being over 8 feet off the ground, the staircase was given careful consideration. It was put on the side that had the grade in its favor to cut down on the size and to not impede on the usable living areas. Traffic flow and usable space should always be considered when designing your space. Now to get a better view of their beautiful backyard we changed their existing single 3 ft. hinged door for a new 6 ft sliding unit. This type of change does involve some structural modification but well worth it. It gave them the sight line they wanted, allows more natural light and has less impact on the living space as the door now slides.
We had a great time constructing this space and love knowing they will be enjoying their home life with family and friends. What could we build in your backyard?

Kim Quigley joined Roundtree in 2015 as our purchasing director. Kim searches far and wide for the best plants at the best value for all our clients. She loves the hunt involved with making sure we have the perfect plants for all our projects. Kim monitors all the vendors who deliver plants and hardgoods to us and ensures everything is on time and running smoothly.
Kim’s roots in the green industry go all the way back to when she was only six years old, when she would spend time at what was then Vickery Florist (now Vickery Wholesale Greenhouse). Her parents were best friends with the founding owners of Vickery. She has fond memories of the greenhouses and spent some time later in her career working in interior plantscaping. Kim has managed landscape installations and worked on the retail side of the horticulture industry. Since 2008 Kim has also designed and installed decorations for the Queen of the Rose Festivals Ball, held during the Tyler rose festival weekend.
After spending 22 years running her own corporate special events company in the convention world, Kim decided she missed working in the plant world. She loves plants and the friendly welcoming feel our industry offers and loves balancing operations and logistics. The position with Roundtree felt like the perfect fit.
When it comes to her favorite part of her job here at Roundtree, Kim says she loves making such a diverse group of people – both at the company and our clients – happy with their projects by finding the very best plants and features. While she does not get to spend a lot of time face to face with our customers, she is always thrilled to hear customer feedback about how much they love their landscapes.
Kim is passionate about building things, working in her yard and her cat Pearl, who she adopted as a stray from the Roundtree office. Because Kim had never had a cat before, only dogs, she said she just went ahead and trained Pearl like a dog. Pearl now responds to commands just like a dog!
A fun fact you might not know about Kim: she is a backyard award winning meat smoking master. Kim learned to smoke meat at a young age with her Dad. She feels learning the patience involved with smoking meat helped teach her patience in other parts of work and life. She also loves the friendly competition when at events. Her signature dish? She says it is probably her smoked brisket, but that her bacon wrapped meatloaf is also quite popular.

Located near McAllister, Montana, the Double D Ranch was born from the owner’s hope for a more appealing accommodation than the original cabin, so his wife would enjoy her time in Montana as much as he did. We met with the couple and toured one of our other projects to get a better idea of what they had in mind. She became very involved in the process (and in fact is an interior designer), and together we created a ranch compound with: a main house, a guesthouse, a horse barn and fishing cabin. All are located on a rural parcel in a historic mining area—in fact, the stone for the buildings was reclaimed from local abandoned mines and the foundation built from century-old gold mine tailings. The buildings feature salvaged and reclaimed log, found branches from the surrounding site for ‘wiggly wood’ on the porches, and antique railroad lanterns act as exterior lighting to further establish tone and texture.
Today their home allows him to fish more, and her to raise paint horses and embrace the Montana lifestyle that her husband had hoped to share with her.

A kitchen remodel is a project that involves changing the layout, fixtures, and finishes of your kitchen. It can be a small project, such as painting the cabinets and replacing the hardware, or a major project, such as tearing down walls and installing new appliances.
Here are some of the things that you might do during a kitchen remodel:
Change the layout of the kitchen. This could involve moving walls, relocating plumbing and electrical fixtures, and adding or removing cabinets.
Install new cabinets and countertops. Cabinets and countertops are the two most important elements of a kitchen, so choosing the right ones is important. There are many different styles and materials to choose from, so you can find something that fits your taste and budget.

Install new appliances. If your appliances are old or outdated, you may want to replace them with new ones. There are many different appliances to choose from, so you can find ones that meet your needs and budget.
Kitchen remodel appliances
Install new flooring. The flooring in your kitchen should be durable and easy to clean. There are many different flooring types, such as tile, hardwood, and laminate.

Install new lighting. Good lighting is essential in a kitchen. You can add task lighting under cabinets and over the sink and ambient lighting in the ceiling.

Add a backsplash. A backsplash is a decorative tile or panel behind the stove and sink. It can add a touch of personality to your kitchen.

A kitchen remodel can be a big investment, but it can also be a very rewarding experience. If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen, it is important to do your research and plan your project carefully.
Here are some additional tips for kitchen remodels:
Set a budget and stick to it. Knowing how much you can afford to spend on your remodel before you start is important. Once you have a budget, get quotes from several contractors to ensure you get the best price.
Get permits. Some kitchen remodels require permits. Be sure to check with your local building department to see if you need any permits before you start your project.
Be patient. Kitchen remodels can take several weeks or even months to complete. Be patient, and don't try to rush the process.
I hope this gives you a general idea of what a kitchen remodel is all about. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

Read what the fabricator had to say:
"My company, David Getts Designer Builder, Inc., is a general contracting firm in the Seattle area. We do a wide variety of custom work for the remodeling sector. We are always looking for the best materials and processes to complete our high-end projects. A recent project we were involved with included the installation of a custom steel driveway gate. Never having installed a remote operated gate before, I really didn't know what was available on the market. After doing a bit of research, I decided on the DuraGates brand, an Italian hardware system supplied by Architectural Iron Designs, Inc. The simple cantilevered design that did not require a ground-mounted track seemed too good to be true. Architectural Iron Designs was extremely helpful throughout the sales process, which eliminated much of the fear associated with using an unfamiliar product. I only had to provide them with the opening span and weight of the gate, and the sales staff did the rest. They created specifications and a detailed drawing showing exact size requirements of the concrete pad, and precise hardware placement.
I've been in the construction industry since 1979. The most important thing I've learned in the quest for success is found in the relationships you develop with employees, subcontractors and suppliers. And Architectural Iron Designs, Inc. is a supplier you can certainly count on. Unloading that 1200lb , 29' long steel gate with the forklift on installation day was going to be a nerve-racking experience no matter what. The thought of a gate that size being balanced on two carriages barely six feet apart had all the guys wondering how well it would work. The rollers not only handled the weight shift effortlessly well, but also kept the gate level in the fully extended position. I would highly recommend the DuraGates system to any peer and certainly plan on using it again for future driveway projects."

The main space is a single, expansive flow outward toward the sound. There is plenty of room for a dining table and seating area in addition to the kitchen. Photography: Andrew Pogue Photography.
