Inspiration for a contemporary kitchen remodel in Portland

Our clients built their Manhattan dream house years ago, but a couple of decades in, the yellow and green palette seemed stale. We brightened the home with new paint and countertops, white oak flooring and updated carpet, custom fixtures and furniture, and new finishes, window treatments, and accessories. For enhanced functionality, we added built-in storage throughout, reupholstered existing furniture and the breakfast nook in performance fabric, and created a custom dining table that seats a dozen. To keep the dining room coastal and informal, we paired plush head chairs with rattan-backed side chairs and accented with sea-foam and sandy-hued floor and window coverings. The addition of a murphy bed, as well as shelving and file storage, made the office more suited to their growing family’s needs. In the second office, a standing desk, as well as a customized craft desk with built-ins for specific supplies, transformed the area into a completely personalized and effective space. New furniture and a ceiling-length fireplace facade of soft ivory and gray stone transformed the family room into a cozy and welcoming retreat. The overall effect is a home that feels spacious, beachy, and comfortable.

The shadow patterns from the Swirls 4x4 Bollard are most dramatic on uniform surfaces such as pavers. But even on mixed surfaces such as grass and mulch, these effects can be enchanting! The bollard has a 5 watt LED MR16 lamp with a 120 degree beam spread. Most MR16s have too narrow of a beam angle to produce this nice of wide illumination. Replacing a large roman tub, K. Rue Designs created this large island for storage and open display shelving. A simle yet effective design statement on the floor tile outlines the island. His and her sinks are separated with a tall pier cabinet with designated space on both sides. Tons of lighting illuminates the space for putting on makeup, making a cup of coffee, and getting ready for the day. Coordinating cabinetry conceals the coffee station and is accented with colorful artwork on the wall. Inside and outside the shower is a bench seat with cut corners for safety.

After consultation with the clients, K. Rue Designs provided a rendering of the potential the great room fireplace wall. Coordinating with the exisitng TV and firebox location, the wall was still completely transformed and dramatized for the clients desired effect. An almost exact replica of the rendering was produced. With special help from the contractor, this gorgeous molding treatment on an otherwise plain wall was created. An intricate faux iron piece especially made for this fireplace trim out keeps one ventilation outlet completely hidden. As for the other, a white vent cover does its best to fade into the white molding. Splitface stone covers the fireplace in a textural display. New lighting on the floor and faceplace front create a dewy glow with the large windows.

Green glass cabinet knobs paired with fresh looking subway tile on the back splash add a pop of color that balances with the fresh color of the table and niche. Chrome accent fixtures, a simple farm house sink, school house pendants, and bead board details finish off this bright and cheerful space. This was a dated and rough space when we began. The plumbing was leaking and the tub surround was failing. The client wanted a bathroom that complimented the era of the home without going over budget. We tastefully designed the space with an eye on the character of the home and budget. We save the sink and tub from the recycling bin and refinished them both. The floor was refreshed with a good cleaning and some grout touch ups and tile replacement using tiles from under the toilet.
