The owners of this 1920's home had Baby #1 well on the way! This caused there to be an urgent need to update the kitchen and getting the project completed before the baby arrived! The client wanted to improve the layout functionality, add an island, enlarge the door openings, and add storage. A difficult task in this small 1920s kitchen. To achieve this design, mechanicals and a window were relocated. The new painted island with Boos block countertop, allowed for larger walk ways. Our services were engaged to refurbish the guest bathroom, which over time had become the wife's main bathroom. The design was driven by our Client's desire for maximized storage space within the confines of this small room. Lighting was selected for both general and task functions, as well as to create ambiance. The custom vanity with quartz counter-top, accomplished the task of maximizing storage. The new walk-in shower features a wall-mounted, rain showerhead, a hand-held shower wand, sliding doors, and a sleek safety bar. The colour pallet is subtle, mostly consisting of white with coloured and textured accents to help open up the space. Even though the new bathroom was designed with one person in mind, it can easily accommodate shared use between four people when there are guest.

This home remodel is a celebration of curves and light. Starting from humble beginnings as a basic builder ranch style house, the design challenge was maximizing natural light throughout and providing the unique contemporary style the client’s craved. The Entry offers a spectacular first impression and sets the tone with a large skylight and an illuminated curved wall covered in a wavy pattern Porcelanosa tile. The chic entertaining kitchen was designed to celebrate a public lifestyle and plenty of entertaining. Celebrating height with a robust amount of interior architectural details, this dynamic kitchen still gives one that cozy feeling of home sweet home. The large “L” shaped island accommodates 7 for seating. Large pendants over the kitchen table and sink provide additional task lighting and whimsy. The Dekton “puzzle” countertop connection was designed to aid the transition between the two color countertops and is one of the homeowner’s favorite details. The built-in bistro table provides additional seating and flows easily into the Living Room. A curved wall in the Living Room showcases a contemporary linear fireplace and tv which is tucked away in a niche. Placing the fireplace and furniture arrangement at an angle allowed for more natural walkway areas that communicated with the exterior doors and the kitchen working areas. The dining room’s open plan is perfect for small groups and expands easily for larger events. Raising the ceiling created visual interest and bringing the pop of teal from the Kitchen cabinets ties the space together. A built-in buffet provides ample storage and display. The Sitting Room (also called the Piano room for its previous life as such) is adjacent to the Kitchen and allows for easy conversation between chef and guests. It captures the homeowner’s chic sense of style and joie de vivre.

Swedish design firm Cortina & Käll were tasked with connecting a new 1,400-square-foot apartment to an existing 3,000-square-foot apartment in a New York City high-rise. Their goal was to give the apartment a scale and flow benefitting its new larger size. “We envisioned a light and sculptural spiral staircase at the center of it all. The staircase and its opening allowed us to achieve the desired transparency and volume, creating a dramatically new and generous apartment,” said Francisco Cortina. This Master Suite Addition project was initiated by our Clients’ desire to stay in their family home well into their golden years. Their wish list included a master suite and large open space for entertaining. With “Aging in Place” a main objective, our goal was to move all essential tasks to the first floor. Our design created a smooth transition between old house and new by expanding their dining room and adding a vestibule between the two spaces. This resulted in a much larger dining space and the larger entertaining area they were seeking. The master bedroom’s floor to ceiling windows on two of the walls frames picturesque views of their beloved garden outside. Vaulted ceilings, French doors to the bathroom with a transom window above express class and grandeur. Through the French doors the elegant master bathroom shines with reflections from the decorative crystal chandelier, white and grey tile, polished chrome fixtures and lighted glass bowls. A double headed shower, with dual temperature controls, and the air-jetted tub provide a true sanctuary for a relaxed bathing experience. “His and Her” elements are also fulfilled with dual vanities, and dual toilet areas. Upon completion, the homeowners passionately stated that this project turned out even better than they could have imagined. They truly love their new space in their long loved home and look forward to many more years in their new haven.

A home office off the kitchen can be concealed with a pocket door. Gray-painted maple Wood-Mode cabinetry complements the kitchen finishes but makes the space unique. **Project Overview** A small, quiet, efficient office space for one that is perfect for sorting mail and paying bills. Though small it has a great deal of natural light and views out the front of the house of the lush landscaping and wildlife. A pocket door makes the office disappear when it's time to entertain. **What Makes This Project Unique?** Small yet incredibly functional, this desk space is a comfortable, quiet place to catch up on home management tasks. Filled with natural light and offering a view of lush landscaping, the compact space is light and airy. To keep it from feeling cramped or crowded, we complemented warm gray-painted maple cabinetry with light countertops and tile. Taller ceilings allow ample storage, including full-height open storage, to manage all of the papers, files and extras that find their way into the home. **Design Challenges** While the office was intentionally designed into a tiny nook off the kitchen and pantry, we didn't want it to feel small for the people using it. By keeping the color palette light, taking cabinetry to the ceiling, incorporating open storage and maximizing natural light, the space feels cozy, and larger than it actually is. Just off the kitchen, this small, well organized home office constructed in 2015 for a West Bloomfield family gets the job done. Teak cabinetry in a Dark Chocolate finish from Tafisa keeps supplies organized and out of sight. The upper doors have no handles, keeping the look sleek. Lower cabinets feature slim line silver pulls. Task lighting mounted under the upper cabinets illuminates the Calacatta quartzite counters to provide a bright, easy to use desk surface. The ‘L’ shaped counter continues down the window wall to provide plenty of room for the family to pay bills or do homework. A linen covered tack board offers a handy place to display important memos and treasured memorabilia.
