Our client wanted an outdoor cooking area that would be fully functional, so we surrounded the 54" Wolf BBQ with stainless steel cabinets, ice maker, mini fridge and an undermount sink and faucet. The cabinets are topped with the same countertop as the indoor kitchen: Cambria Quartz in "Torquay," with an 8" splash. The decking is a composite material made from corn husks and will stand up to the harsh winters and warm summers in this area. The ceiling above the outdoor area is half cedar tongue and groove and the lake side half is clear Lexan to allow more natural light into the area. The original 1928 Art Deco home underwent its own transformation, while we designed the landscape to perfectly match. The clients wanted a style reminiscent of a Country Club experience, with an expansive pool, outdoor kitchen with a shade structure, and a custom play area for the kids. Bluestone paving really shines in this setting, offsetting the classic Sonoma-style architecture and framing the contemporary gas fire pit with its blue accents. Landscape lighting enhances the site by night for evening gatherings or a late-night swim. In front, a bluestone entrance leads out to paver driveway and styled front gate. Plantings throughout are Water Efficiency Landscape certified, accenting the front hardscape and back terraces with beautiful low-water color.

Some projects start with a vision. This one started with a memory — a Chicago bar the homeowners couldn't stop thinking about, and an unfinished basement just waiting for its second act. Built years earlier with the intent to finish it later, this basement became a full-blown speakeasy — complete with a hidden door leading into the main bar area, because the best spaces make you work a little to find them. Reclaimed Rosewood brick lines the walls, paired with wall trim through the theater area for a layered, lived-in feel. A faux tin ceiling hides painted-to-blend speakers and lighting, so the tech disappears and the room takes center stage. Behind the bar, a mirrored backsplash catches the light, while a tile inlay surrounded by rich hardwood grounds the space underfoot. Metal foot rails, a custom cherry wood bar top, and a spill ledge on the theater bar countertop round out a room built for entertaining. The exposed I-beam could have been a problem to hide. Instead, we made it a feature — a nod to the industrial, speakeasy mood running through the space. A custom-welded glass front and sheet metal barn door carry that aesthetic through. Our partners at Bravas brought it to life with a short-throw projector and digital electrical panels that let the homeowners shift the mood at the touch of a button — bright for movie night, moody for late-night entertaining. The upper deck provides the perfect patio cover and now features a Mangaris premium hardwood ceiling with fans, inset heaters and lighting. This richly-toned ceiling coordinates beautifully with the bbq bar. The serene protected patio lounge seating area is now the perfect gathering spot for after-dinner aperitifs or late night movie night. The oversized patio table and bold woven seating offers a comfortable space to watch magnificent SoCal sunsets beyond the glass-like surface of the infinity pool or relax and enjoy an intimate conversation by the warmth of the backyard firepit.
