The Charmant Hotel management (per the Architect) wanted to replace umbrellas (which had become a problem with wind) with folding lateral arm retractable awnings to increase the seating area and use the porch without worrying about weather conditions such as light rain. The existing umbrellas did not provide sufficient shade coverage or light rain protection due to the spaces created by using umbrellas.

Two weeks later these delicious greens have filled out and are ready to be harvested. I recommend removing just a few of the outer leaves as needed which keeps the plant producing for a long time.

Approaching the home from the road, all that is visible is an intriguing peek of a rooftop through the trees and garden understory. Lush, terraced gardens lead the way to the entrance with the sounds of birds, rabbits and other wildlife rustling in the thick foliage. As the owners later commented, it feels rural even though you’re in the center of a well-populated residential area.
