Terrazzo is a quite a bit different from the natural stone floors we most commonly work with. It’s a type of flooring material that was made popular by Venetian builders in Italy in the 1920s, but is ultimately descended from styles of design that date back hundreds of years. A typical Terrazzo floor consists of chips of marble or granite set in concrete and polished to result in a smooth surface. This Terrazzo floor, installed in the hallway of a property in Bridgend, South Wales, was in relatively good physical condition, but it had clearly lost its shine due to the build-up of dirt and muck over the years. In fact, it was first installed in around 1940! The owner was keen to have it rejuvenated to its best possible condition, so they asked me to come in to see what I could do. My first course of action was to apply Tile Doctor Pro Clean liberally across the floor and leave it to dwell for a short period. This is a high alkaline cleaner that is designed to deal with light to moderate soil build-up, and to strip away any old sealer remaining on the floor. I scrubbed the product in using a black pad fitted to a rotary machine and vacuumed up the resulting cleaning with a wet-vac machine. Next, to restore the shine to the floor, I undertook a process known as burnishing, which involves the application of diamond encrusted polishing pads. We will typically start with a Coarse grit pad to level off any uneven areas of the floor and grind down any particularly stubborn marks and stains. Then, we gradually refine the polish on the floor using Medium and Fine grit pads. A small amount of water is used as lubrication with each pad. After I had finished applying the first three pads in our four-pad system, I gave the floor a thorough rinse and left it to dry overnight. I returned to the property the next day and immediately ran some damp tests to check for excess moisture issues, which one might expect with an old floor like this one. Thankfully, the floor proved dry – and I could finish the burnishing process with the fourth and final Very Fine diamond encrusted burnishing pad, which achieved a beautiful shine finish. Finally, I sealed the floor with three coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow, an impregnating sealer which provides robust protection and enhances the coloured patterns in the Terrazzo. As you can see from the photos above, the floor is looking so much more colourful and bright after a deep clean, polish and a fresh seal. The customer was over the moon! Our client had inherited this Travertine floor when purchasing in a lovely street in Walton-On-Thames, close by was the River Thames which runs all the way into London. The new owners were unhappy with the floor in that it did not look very clean, and they were keen to get this rectified. I arranged a site visit to survey the floor and see what could be done to restore its appearance. The floor itself was in good physical condition, however, it was apparent from the level of dirt ingrained in the stone that it had not been maintained very well by the previous owner. I carried out a small test clean which came out well and they could see straight away what the floor should look really like! They were happy with my renovation quote and we agreed a mutually convenient time where I could work in relation to the COVID guidelines. The Travertine floor was scrubbed using a mixture of Tile Doctor Pro Clean and Remove and Go. These are heavy duty cleaning products designed for use on tile and stone can be combined to form a powerful cleaning/stripping solution which is left to dwell on the floor surface. After a short while the solution was worked into the stone using a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. This cleaning recipe works extremely well breaking down dirt, stains, and grease in the stone. Following a machine scrub and a more manual hand scrub of the grout lines, we then pressure rinsed the soil away and then it was extracted using an industrial wet vacuum. In a couple of areas, it was necessary to repeat the process to ensure it was completely clean. Once we were satisfied that the stone was fresh and clean, the floor was left to dry off overnight, so it would be ready for sealing the following day. After drying overnight, the floor was checked with a damp meter to make sure it was dry. Once reassured I started with the application of the fresh sealer to the floor using Tile Doctor Colour Grow Sealer which is a colour enhancing sealer that works from within by soaking into the pores of the stone. Several coats were applied allowing each one to dry before applying the next. This sealer does not provide a glossy finish, just a nice natural sheen. This brought back the contrast and natural colours in the stone, whilst adding protection to stone for many years to come. The client was very happy with the work we carried out, the floor had come up much better than they had expected, and it really made a difference to the lovely kitchen space. The floor looked like new. I recommended the regular use of Tile Doctor Stone Soap for future cleaning which will keep the floor in great condition and ensure the longevity of the newly applied sealant. Floor Installation 1.Mark out the baseline of gound level, 2.Mix the mortar with ratio of 1 cement to 4 sand to have semi-day mortar, 3.Lay the mixed mortar in level with a layer of 3-4cm thickness,place the tile over the mortar and adjust the height properly to be leveled, 4.Remove the tile after level adjustment.Put a thin layer of cement powder on the mortar and add water on it to become wet, 5.Put the tile on top and gently knock with rubber hammer until it sealed with the mortar properly. Make sure the tile is leveled and has the same space between each other. Those tiles which are not leveled with others should be removed and repeat the leveling procedure in step 4.Genetally,the space between two tiles should be 2mm for water evaporation and normal expansion. When I began this kitchen project, the space was constrained by an awkward peninsula and a dropped ceiling that compressed the room both physically and visually. Fluorescent fixtures sat behind a plastic diffuser, and the refrigerator was wedged beside the range, leaving the kitchen feeling crowded while also making poor use of the available space. The transformation began by taking things away. The dropped ceiling was removed, the fluorescent tubes went with it, and the room suddenly gained height and light. The peninsula was removed too, opening the floor plan and allowing the cabinetry to continue down an adjacent wall and incorporate a second window. What had been a small, enclosed kitchen became a generous working space with room for a slim, functional L-shaped island, additional cabinetry and, perhaps most importantly, a much more natural relationship between the different parts of the kitchen. The palette is quiet, but there is a lot happening within it. Soft sage cabinetry grounds the room, while warm white upper cabinets and pantry cabinetry lift the space. A pure white quartz countertop provides a crisp surface against the cabinetry, and soft brass hardware adds just enough warmth. The new Sub Zero refrigerator was given its own wall, beside a full pantry, freeing the range wall to become a strong focal point. A Monogram range now sits centered beneath an angular stainless-steel Zephyr hood, framed by the kitchen's most distinctive element: a graphite backsplash made from WOW Design's Pottery tile. Inspired by Japanese handmade ceramics, the tiles have a wonderfully tactile, imperfect character. Most are deep graphite, but here and there the surface breaks into strokes of camel, dusty peach and deep blue-gunmetal glaze. There is an almost painterly quality to the way those colors move across the wall, giving the kitchen something that is difficult to achieve with a more uniform material—the feeling that someone actually made it. The rest of the room was designed around that same balance of simplicity and warmth. New pale oak flooring runs throughout the ground floor, bringing a natural material and a soft golden tone beneath the cooler sage and graphite. Floating oak shelves flank the windows and provide a home for plants, ceramics and a few favorite objects, while another pair of shelves beside the refrigerator creates a small landing place for the things that inevitably arrive with you at the end of the day—keys, mail, bags and whatever else happens to be in your hands. The island occupies a surprisingly small footprint, yet its L-shaped form provides both additional work surface and seating without interrupting the flow of the room. A deep sink with an integrated cutting board and roll-up drying rack, a commercial-style faucet and under-cabinet LED lighting bring the practical details up to the same level of thoughtfulness as the larger design decisions. In the end, the renovation did more than just enlarge the kitchen; it created a space that feels calm, contemporary, warm, and a little unexpected … and, most importantly, we created a kitchen that finally makes sense for the way my clients live. The transformation began by taking things away. The dropped ceiling was removed, the fluorescent tubes went with it, and the room suddenly gained height and light. The peninsula was removed too, opening the floor plan and allowing the cabinetry to continue down an adjacent wall and incorporate a second window. What had been a small, enclosed kitchen became a generous working space with room for a slim, functional L-shaped island, additional cabinetry and, perhaps most importantly, a much more natural relationship between the different parts of the kitchen. The palette is quiet, but there is a lot happening within it. Soft sage cabinetry grounds the room, while warm white upper cabinets and pantry cabinetry lift the space. A pure white quartz countertop provides a crisp surface against the cabinetry, and soft brass hardware adds just enough warmth. The new Sub Zero refrigerator was given its own wall, beside a full pantry, freeing the range wall to become a strong focal point. A Monogram range now sits centered beneath an angular stainless-steel Zephyr hood, framed by the kitchen's most distinctive element: a graphite backsplash made from WOW Design's Pottery tile. Inspired by Japanese handmade ceramics, the tiles have a wonderfully tactile, imperfect character. Most are deep graphite, but here and there the surface breaks into strokes of camel, dusty peach and deep blue-gunmetal glaze. There is an almost painterly quality to the way those colors move across the wall, giving the kitchen something that is difficult to achieve with a more uniform material—the feeling that someone actually made it. The rest of the room was designed around that same balance of simplicity and warmth. The island occupies a surprisingly small footprint, yet its L-shaped form provides both additional work surface and seating without interrupting the flow of the room. A deep sink with an integrated cutting board and roll-up drying rack, a commercial-style faucet and under-cabinet LED lighting bring the practical details up to the same level of thoughtfulness as the larger design decisions. In the end, the renovation did more than just enlarge the kitchen; it created a space that feels calm, contemporary, warm, and a little unexpected … and, most importantly, we created a kitchen that finally makes sense for the way my clients live. A Monogram range now sits centered beneath an angular stainless-steel Zephyr hood, framed by the kitchen's most distinctive element: a graphite backsplash made from WOW Design's Pottery tile. Inspired by Japanese handmade ceramics, the tiles have a wonderfully tactile, imperfect character. Most are deep graphite, but here and there the surface breaks into strokes of camel, dusty peach and deep blue-gunmetal glaze. There is an almost painterly quality to the way those colors move across the wall, giving the kitchen something that is difficult to achieve with a more uniform material—the feeling that someone actually made it. The rest of the room was designed around that same balance of simplicity and warmth. New pale oak flooring runs throughout the ground floor, bringing a natural material and a soft golden tone beneath the cooler sage and graphite. Floating oak shelves flank the windows and provide a home for plants, ceramics and a few favorite objects, while another pair of shelves beside the refrigerator creates a small landing place for the things that inevitably arrive with you at the end of the day—keys, mail, bags and whatever else happens to be in your hands. The island occupies a surprisingly small footprint, yet its L-shaped form provides both additional work surface and seating without interrupting the flow of the room. A deep sink with an integrated cutting board and roll-up drying rack, a commercial-style faucet and under-cabinet LED lighting bring the practical details up to the same level of thoughtfulness as the larger design decisions. In the end, the renovation did more than just enlarge the kitchen; it created a space that feels calm, contemporary, warm, and a little unexpected … and, most importantly, we created a kitchen that finally makes sense for the way my clients live.
