The upper cubbie was shallower at 13” and was sized right to hold a few spare towels without the towels being lost to an unreachable area. The custom furniture-style vanity, also built and finished at the Hillcrest custom shop facilitated a clutter-free countertop with its two deep drawers, one with a u-shaped cut out for the sink plumbing. Considering the relatively small size of the bathroom, and the vanity’s proximity to the toilet, the drawer design allows for greater access to the storage area as compared to a vanity door design that would only be accessed from the front. The custom niche in the shower serves and a consolidated home for soap, shampoo bottles, and all other shower accessories. This concealed wine cellar in the hills of San Carlos was an especially challenging build, tucked into a steep 45 degree sloped lot with limited access. Site conditions required that the excavation be done manually. The cellar features exterior rated Douglas fir doors with double glazed glass panels, enclosing custom wine racks that were designed, built, and finished in house. The interior walls are stucco and plaster, finished with an old world faux design that adds rich texture and character. A custom wine cooling and air circulation system was engineered and installed by our team to maintain ideal conditions for the wine collection. To the left sits a wet bar, and to the right, another set of double doors opens to additional storage. The client later added a pool table to the center of the room, completing the space as a hidden retreat. The entrance itself was cleverly concealed within a wall of cabinetry—an elegant touch the homeowner preferred to keep private.
