This project located in Muskoka blends modern sophistication into the natural setting. Due to the adjacent lake and forest environments, a great deal of care was taken to ensure there were no impacts on these sensitive environments. The blast rock was salvaged to create “planting pockets” on the steep slopes allowing for nearly 700 mature trees to be craned into these locations. Working with local arborists, native species of trees and understory planting were selected to ensure ecosystems weren’t negatively impacted. Areas of the patios overlooking the lake cantilevered out over the edge of the rock face and required the installation of custom iron and glass railings between stone pillars to provide safety due to the severity of the slope. On the west side of the site, a penetration asphalt sport court surface was suspended atop a 4-car concrete garage, more than 45ft above grade level. Enclosed by chain-link fencing, this elevated “sky-court” offers a stunning setting for recreational play.

The planting is used to fill the space inbetween that winds organically around the structures. The paving is mostly crushed shells with alternating sizes of Schellevis pavers in the patio areas. The sunken trampoline and the room for sleep overs in the veranda make the garden extra popular with the kids in the neighborhood.

These Somfy powered BTX Gemini shades offer both privacy and light filtering in the same shade. Alternating strips of sheer and room darkening fabric align to give the desired effect. We used battery powered shades to overcome the lack of wiring in the walls. The link shows these shads in operation.

Sometimes 'restraint' is the most important design element used in pulling a property together. There is a fine (admittedly subjective) line between running out of nerve... falling short... and goin over the top, produsing an almost comical theme park result. These clients had ambitious plans for building their new Edwardian home. Realizing their property had the lines of a once great garden, they cleverly slipped the new home onto th site without betraying the existing setting. Our team's objective was to enliven the tired grounds, adding features and linking areas in a logical, tasteful manner. The front entrance walkway and driveway pad are adorned with stone inlays. The former garage (now a garden shed) and adjoining brick wing all are alive with climbing trees. What was once a sunken vegetable patch is now a Celtic cross parterre. Rubble pathways weave through boxwood, lavender and rose standards. A sad, sagging dry stone wall is completely rebuilt (once again dry). It now enjoys the addition of a small recessed water feature. A wonderful and spacious lower garden is fully revitalized and connected to the upper area with a grand staircase. Sitting areas share a view of an exquisite cascading water feature. The bronze ladies stand in a raised pool, set into a larger perennial border.
