The clients were dismayed by their front-yard view of busy Scott Boulevard in Decatur, but they did not want to be boxed in by an evergreen hedge. Utility wires restricted allowable plants in most areas. Native grasses, wildflowers were combined with native shrubs to screen the busy four-lane road and create four-season interest. Looking down on excavated turnaround seguing to a rock garden of local stone that will be planted in spring 2018. Eastern red cedar, blueberry, broomsedge, little bluestem, and Muhly grass shown here, with redbud and musclewood in the background.

The surrounding sea of Texas Live Oaks and Little Bluestem grass offers a warm welcome as visitors wind their way down the driveway to the auto court.

In this new planting, native "Northwind" switchgrass screens a busy four-lane road, backed by native shrubs and trees. Although most of the plants are deciduous, the grasses screen in the winter; by the time they are cut back, the trees and shrubs have leafed out. Also shown here: viburnums, musclewood, witchhazel, "Rising Sun" redbud, and "High Shoals" E. red cedar. "Standing Ovation" little bluestem and purple coneflower are in the foreground. Three existing dwarf arborvitae can bee seen backing the planting.
