This Houston bathroom remodel has it all - from its contemporary, en suite design to its Carrara marble to its luxury spa shower and his-and-her closets! "You'll notice a lot of differences between the original renderings and the final project," notes Wayne Franks, owner of Outdoor Homescapes of Houston. "That's why our realistic, detailed 3D graphic renderings and virtual video tours are so useful to clients who can't visualize the end result in their heads. With us, they can preview the project from every angle and make sure they get exactly what they want." Check out the new, 10-foot-long by 4-feet-deep closet for her. It was built along the wall of the new addition, as you can see in the 3D graphic created for the client below. The first door on the left leads to this closet. The next two doors down lead to the original, 6-foot-long by 4-feet-long by 4-feet-deep closet shared by the couple, but now reserved for him. As you can see in the graphic, a small, private commode was added onto the back of the new shower. Recessed lighting was also added for more ambient light, along with brushed nickel lighting fixtures. The closeup of the new shower and dressing suite, meanwhile, shows the black-and-grey border and accents in the shower. The border and accents are a stone-and-glass tile mix from Floor & Décor. The shower floor - a flat mosaic marble pebble - is also from Floor & Décor. Also notice the view of the Houston bath remodel, looking toward the back yard from the master bedroom. On the right, after the towel hooks and before the French doors, a flat-screen TV has been added for viewing from the shower and dressing area. This Houston bathroom remodel sprung out of a bachelor's engagement. The original, 300-square-foot master bathroom - still in the 80s with brass fixtures and wallpaper - desperately needed a redesign that could accommodate his future bride. So Outdoor Homescapes gutted the original bathroom and doubled the size with a 300-square-foot addition off the back of the house. Check out the full-on view of the project. (This is where our 3D graphic renderings, which allow clients to preview their project from every angle and make changes, come in handy. As you can see, the client went with white instead of dark-wood vanity cabinets, ditched the glass shower surround and scrapped the second vanity area).

With this client who has been passionate about plants all his life, there was naturally a close collaboration and a lot of input from him. Upon closer inspection you'd find some very exceptional plants that are sort of experimental but "all worth the try" in Gordon's eyes. And he is right! I relished the opportunity to use Star Magnolia stellata, Redbud Cercis 'Avondale' and 'Silver Cloud', Arabian Lilac 'Grand Duke of Tuscany', Royal Bromeliad Vriesea imperialis, also many unusual bulbs such as Scilla. Besides structure providing shrubs and trees (Tecoma, existing Indian Hawthorne with beautiful structures, Sweet Pea Bush, Golden Breath of Heaven, Ilex, Ginkgo, Bronze Loquat etc.) you'll see here also my favorite perennials, succulents and grasses, all as low care and undemanding as well as low-water as possible, to keep the landscape colorful and interesting year round. One of the highlights of this garden are the dry stream beds, bird bath and garden bench that we added. Built originally by himself and his wife, the dry stream beds were overgrown, mostly hidden by plant debris, or half rolling down hill. We had fun selecting a mixed collection of colorful and richly textured boulders of various sizes over, and with the input from 7 team members: Gordon, me, the contractor, the supervisor and three workers, we re-created the stream beds, making sure that anchor stones on the sides were well embedded in the slope, and that stone shelves and “top dressing” with smaller pebbles would add to the visual interest. Now these beds form very pleasing architectural features that look like they have always been there. We were all surprised how quickly all plants adapted to the site and started growing and putting out bloom. Now the old birdbath, a traditional white thing with dove figurines resting on the scalloped bowl, looked out of place, and I suggested to replace it with a stone bowl. And that part of the garden just called for a bench under the Macademia nut tree, to observe the birds and contemplate the whole creation. Only stone would do, but not any stone! Gordon picked a Basalt boulder that was naturally bowl shaped. It’s so heavy that it took 8 men to heave it into place! Our clients came to us for a bathroom renovation with the addition of a walk-in shower. To keep this bathroom feeling open, we used glass shower walls and doors. Along with that, we wanted to make sure the shower provided our clients with a spa-like experience, so we installed all new plumbing lines in the basement and configured the shower so both the rain-shower and the hand-held body spray could be utilized at the same time. The dark natural tones of the mosaic are complemented by the rest of the lighter wall and floor tile as well as the dark wood we selected for the vanity set. Is it crazy to think about chimney repairs in the winter? It’s cold and snowy outside and the rooftops are solid white, coated with a layer of ice. A homeowner called us with a concern about her home. She reported that a small stream of water was coming down the chimney and into the firebox. To keep the water from flooding the firebox, the homeowner placed a Tupperware container to collect the water. Not a good look. Can chimney repairs in the winter be done by a certified chimney technician? Chimney Repairs in the Winter Chimney repairs can be completed in the winter, although it depends on what type of chimney repair is needed. Let’s take a quick look at the different chimney repairs in our cold winter months. Chimney Cap: If your chimney cap comes loose, or if the winter winds knocked it out of place or blew it off completely, our certified chimney technician can go up on the roof and take care of the chimney cap for you with a chimney cap replacement. Our technicians follow the guidelines for safety, especially in the winter months when roofing systems are the slipperiest. Flashing: Flashing is the connector from the roofing system to the chimney. It is the barrier that protects water from finding its way into your home. However, if the flashing becomes loose or comes away from the roof and chimney, it is open season for the rain to come directly into your home and create chaos. Chimney Crown: The chimney crown is the slab of cement that sits on top of the chimney and right below the chimney cap. Hairline cracks can form in the chimney crown allowing water, melted snow, to enter. Even the smallest hairline crack can cause the melted snow to find the weak spot on the chimney crown and make its way into your home. Remember, hairline cracks can and will grow in width and length with the freeze thaw cycles. When the melted snow freezes at night, it expands inside of the crack. If the temperatures cooperate in the daytime, it melts the snow. But remember, it doesn’t necessarily dry out inside of the crack. It can remain moist and freeze again at night. Chimney Tuckpointing: Tuckpointing the chimney can be done in the winter, but it certainly isn’t an easy process as we’re dealing with wet mortar. Cracks can create an entry point for melted snow to enter, further deteriorating the mortar. Although it is not optimal to perform chimney repairs in the winter, Superior Chimney takes precautions to ensure a safe and effective repair. Now the homeowner can get rid of the streaming water in the firebox and enjoy the rest of the winter with a warm and dry fireplace.
