This backyard renovation in Coquitlam included the construction of a durable Allen Block retaining wall system designed to create a functional transition between the lower concrete patio and the upper landscaped yard. The project involved excavation, compacted road base preparation, and installation of proper gravel drainage behind the wall to ensure long-term stability and effective water management.
Integrated landscape stairs were built using matching retaining wall blocks to provide safe and convenient access between outdoor levels while maintaining a clean and cohesive design. The new tiered layout not only improves drainage and prevents soil movement but also enhances the overall appearance and usability of the backyard.
This upgrade was part of a larger exterior renovation project that focused on improving both the functionality and visual appeal of the outdoor living space.

Office Workstations and Cubicles: The Unsung Heroes of Efficient Team Environments
In today's fast-paced business world, the hum of productivity is the sweetest sound an office can produce. But what fuels this symphony of efficiency?
While leadership and strategy are crucial, the physical environment in which a team operates plays a role that is just as vital. The debate between open-plan offices and traditional cubicles has raged for years, yet the truth is that a well-designed space incorporating both office workstations cubicles can be the key to unlocking a team's full potential. This isn't just about furniture; it's about creating a habitat for success.
The Evolution of the Workspace: Beyond the Beige Box
Gone are the days of monotonous rows of identical, soul-crushing cubicles. Modern office design has embraced a more nuanced understanding of worker needs. The contemporary workstation is a far cry from its predecessors, offering flexibility, ergonomic support, and a nod to aesthetic appeal. This evolution recognizes that a one-size-fits-all approach stifles creativity and productivity.
Fostering Focus in a Sea of Collaboration
While collaboration is a cornerstone of modern business, the need for individual, focused work remains paramount. This is where the modern cubicle shines. It provides a sanctuary from the constant distractions of a completely open office, allowing employees to delve deep into tasks that require concentration. This dedicated space minimizes interruptions, leading to higher quality work and reduced stress levels.
The Power of Personalization and Ownership
Giving employees a degree of control over their immediate environment can have a profound impact on morale and engagement. Modern workstations and cubicles that allow for personalization be it through adjustable shelving, pinboards for personal items, or even the choice of chair foster a sense of ownership. This small act of empowerment can translate into a greater sense of belonging and commitment to the organization.
Ergonomics: The Foundation of Employee Well-being and Productivity
A comfortable employee is a productive employee. Ergonomics is not a luxury; it's a fundamental necessity in any office environment. Poorly designed workstations can lead to a host of musculoskeletal issues, from back pain to carpal tunnel syndrome, resulting in increased absenteeism and decreased efficiency. Investing in ergonomic chairs, adjustable-height desks, and properly positioned monitors is an investment in the long-term health and performance of your team.
Designing for Synergy: The Strategic office layout design
The arrangement of workstations and cubicles is as important as the furniture itself. A strategic office layout design can facilitate seamless communication and collaboration while still providing pockets of privacy for focused work. This involves creating "neighborhoods" for different teams, placing collaborative zones in central, easily accessible areas, and ensuring that high-traffic pathways don't cut through quiet work zones.
Breaking Down Barriers with Hybrid Designs
The most effective office environments often feature a hybrid approach. This might involve clusters of cubicles for focused work, interspersed with open, collaborative "huddle spaces" equipped with whiteboards and comfortable seating. This variety allows employees to choose the environment that best suits the task at hand, offering the best of both worlds.
The Role of Acoustics in a Thriving Workplace
Noise is one of the biggest complaints in open-plan offices. Well-designed cubicles with sound-dampening panels can significantly mitigate this issue. Furthermore, incorporating acoustic solutions throughout the office, such as sound-absorbing materials on walls and ceilings, can create a more pleasant and productive auditory environment for everyone.
Integrating Technology for a Seamless Workflow
In the digital age, technology is the lifeblood of any business. Modern office workstations are designed with this in mind, featuring integrated power and data ports, cable management systems, and ample space for multiple monitors. This seamless integration of technology ensures that employees have the tools they need to work efficiently and without frustration.
Choosing the Right Partner for Your Office Environment
The task of outfitting an office can be daunting. Partnering with a knowledgeable and reputable Meet&Co commercial furniture supplier is crucial to creating an environment that is both functional and inspiring. A good supplier will not only offer a wide range of high-quality products but will also provide expert advice on space planning and ergonomic best practices, ensuring that your investment yields the best possible return.
The Future of the Office: Flexibility and Adaptability
The world of work is constantly evolving, and office design must evolve with it. The future lies in creating flexible and adaptable spaces that can be easily reconfigured to meet the changing needs of a business. Modular furniture and movable partitions are key components of this future-proof approach, allowing organizations to scale and adapt without the need for costly and disruptive renovations.
Conclusion: A Strategic Investment in Your Greatest Asset
Ultimately, the design of your office is a direct reflection of your company's culture and values. By investing in high-quality, ergonomic, and well-designed office workstations and cubicles, you are sending a clear message to your employees: their well-being and productivity matter. This strategic investment in your physical workspace is, in fact, an investment in your most valuable asset your people. The result is a more engaged, efficient, and innovative team, ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
Find the right local pro for your project

Clean L-shaped residential kitchen with full white push-to-open handleless cabinetry for sleek unobstructed facade. Upper wall cabinets with open niche niche storage flank window area, matching marble-effect quartz splashback connects countertop seamlessly, sufficient base drawers and cabinet doors organize cookware and groceries. Large-format grey floor tiles enhance durability, bright all-white scheme suits Israel’s strong sunlight environment, keeping the kitchen visually fresh and easy to maintain long-term.

Our busy Silicon Valley clients asked us to convert their tight-quartered 1960’s ranch house to a gracious family home that would meet their long term needs. Ease of living was paramount, both in functionality and in ordered design.
The project was completed on a moderate budget. While retaining most of the structure of the existing house to avoid costly structural changes, we opened walls to improve the sight lines and flow of the house and bring in more light. We made small additions at the front and back bedrooms to gain space for the family and relatives. An existing underused patio area was improved with a simple outdoor kitchen and overhang to extend the living space to the outside. Costs were kept down with choices of modest materials.
Everything was made to be functional. Ample storage has been built into the right places. The details of the kitchen were carefully worked out to accommodate all the wishes of the various cooks in the family. The house is set up to be easy to keep clean. Acoustic walls separate living from bedroom spaces so adults can enjoy time together while children sleep. The outdoor kitchen has easy access to the indoor kitchen and the garage, and its setup promotes socializing while cooking outdoors.
A large part of the narrow back yard was previously unusable space due to a steep slope up to a neighbor’s higher fence. With a new retaining wall and some re-grading we took back more of the yard for the patio and play space on a new lawn.
The remodeled house is a mix of contemporary and traditional elements. Cool colors have a calming effect. Traditional items such as prairie style windows, trellis, mosaic tiles, and Shaker style cabinets, break down the scale in an otherwise streamlined, contemporary design. A new gabled roof with a broad arch at the front of the house marks the entry and resolves a challenging form where the central entry is set back from walls on both sides.

The Willow - Transitional Family Home on Acreage in Brush Prairie, Washington by Cascade West Development Inc.
Another key ingredient was a long term solution for a growing family. With a teen, preteen and a toddler it was well understood that this family would be growing, in many different ways, for years to come. A great way to plan for the future is to build in adaptability. This meant multi-use rooms, nooks and convertible flex spaces. Some of the flex features wee rooms with closets and other additional storage that could be used for personal or family effects. This included additions to the den, craft room and lots of spaces in-between. Two dining areas allow for added entertaining, either formal or informal. And underground plumbing designed for expansion will make it easy to set-up a detached garage, for the teenage years, or an in-law suite for when older relatives get a little late in their years.

In order to keep the temperatures out while allowing the evergreen views in, Glo A5 double pane aluminum windows and doors were selected. This series has increased energy efficiency with a larger continuous thermal break, multiple air seals, low iron glass, and high-performance spacers. In order to maintain clean sight lines and cohesive design appeal, the hidden sash was selected for the windows. This gives the operable windows the appearance of fixed windows with the same coordinating slim frame. Since minimal and modern were a major focus for the home’s fenestration products, all the handles were powder-coated to match the black windows and doors throughout. In addition, the A5 windows and doors provide high value performance and long-term durability while remaining cost effective, making them one of our most popular series.

AWARD WINNING DUPLEX DESIGN
Bob-a-day Park Little Bay duplex in historical precinct
This Little Bay duplex is the winner of the HIA Housing Awards 2019 for category:
– Townhouse/Villa Development 2-10 dwellings ‘HIA NSW Region’
and a finalist for category:
– Residential Interior Design ‘HIA NSW Region’
Judges said, “A functional design with a light and bright living area that has excellent cross flow ventilation and innovative design with sustainable features.”
Congratulating SSRB Developments with Edifice Design, Architects on such an outstanding achievement, HIA Executive Director – NSW, David Bare, said “The awards recognise excellence in residential construction and these awards provide a tremendous opportunity for HIA members to showcase their projects and highlight building and design excellence.” [HIA Media Release 19 October 2019]
Set in Little Bay’s old Prince Henry Hospital precinct, this dual occupancy is designed to complement its rare historic and coastal location. The two dwelling requirement and contextual fit make the building unique, shaped and functioning as follows:
Design
Subtly distinguished separate dwellings — while still appearing as a single residence.
Contemporary but synergistic with heritage setting — contemporary detailing with a scale (height, setbacks) in keeping with the historic “Flower’s Building” and materials/colour selections (face brick, boarded cladding, stone) that complements, not competes with, its heritage, seaside setting.
Streetscape and contextual fit:
The Ewing Avenue frontage and northern neighbour are addressed by a darker, quieter core element, clad in metal and light coloured, boarded features that extend from the ground to its flat parapeted roof.
The darker, northern side anchors the lighter and more open, glazed southern side that overlooks Bob A Day Park and sits beneath a flat planar roof. External walls are layered horizontally with boarded cladding to the first floor, flat rendered wall at the ground floor and a face brick basement.
Balconies, views and privacy — generous floor to ceiling horizontal louvred windows fill rooms with sunlight and views to the park and ocean. The linear effect is further accentuated by both dwellings having projected outdoor balconies with the southern balcony having a continuum of louvres to either open or close for sunlight, stargazing or privacy.
Façade finishes and an entry of stone, copper and wood — texture and colour, accentuated by a copper panelled front door, timber louvres above and a feature stone blade wall, clearly defines the entry. Slender metal awnings and sliding panels also provide further articulation to the facades as well as privacy.
An entry of stone, copper and wood reflect façade finishes — texture and colour, accentuated by a copper panelled front door, timber louvres above and a feature stone blade wall, clearly define the entry. Slender metal awnings and
sliding panels also provide further articulation to the façades as well as privacy.
A welcoming sky lit void foyer — a large atrium with skylight window brightens the entryway and provides main circulation to the hall and stair.
Linear stair and lift amenity — a streamlined timber stairway with vertically lined balustrade is a focal point of the entry hall. A lift with ceramic tiles to floor and steel finishes services the main dwelling.
A handcrafted bespoke artisan sandstone wall with fireplace — is a centrepiece dividing the main living room from the eating and kitchen areas.
An unusual partially sunken roof terrace — which provides an entertainment area of spectacular district and ocean views while remaining relatively private, quiet and sheltered.
An exterior ‘living green wall’ — which is also viewable from the living room.
A sunny, north east plunge pool — which is overlooked by two semi enclosed entertainment balconies.
Large water tanks totalling 7000 litres — which services toilets, laundry and gardens.
An extensive solar panel system — totalling over 10 KWs.
Client brief
Dual occupancy required for accommodating two separate dwellings, the primary dwelling for parents long term and the secondary dwelling for extended family.
1. Quantitative requirements
Each dwelling with:
2 residential levels + roof terrace + basement carpark
main external balcony off the main living area
private garden setting
full ducted air conditioning
separation by a vertical, fire and acoustically rated, common wall.
Primary dwelling (southside) — for main family:
3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, laundry, open planned living, kitchen and dining areas, a separate TV room, roof terrace and serviced by a lift (basement to level 1)
5,000 litre rainwater tank servicing the toilets and laundry
5.4 KW solar panel system
2 car basement car park.
Secondary dwelling (northside) — for extended family:
3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, laundry, open planned living, kitchen, dining, a separate TV room
Plunge pool
2,000 litre rainwater tank servicing the toilets and laundry
4.8 kW solar panel system
1 car basement car park + 1 car hardstand.
2. Qualitative requirements:
Generally:
Maximise sun, light and outlook to all rooms. Extensive glazing and use of skylights.
Rooms to be designed as contemporary spaces with seamless, clean lines.
Colour selections to be light, non jarring, using colours from whites to neutrals.
Use of natural materials such as timber and stone.
Open planned living areas — kitchen, dining and living with a strong spatial connection to encourage family together time.
Main dwelling to have a separate TV room so that living areas remain unaffected by media intrusions.
Bedrooms grouped together on the ground floor to ensure district and ocean views are prioritised for the living areas.
Maximise louvred glazing to southern side of primary residence to overlook Bob A Day Park. Ocean views maximised where possible, most likely achieved across to the north east.
Multi-layered complex approval process
From the outset, there were numerous multi-layered approval stages through which to navigate. This ensured a vigorous, disciplined design approach. Stages included:
The Prince Henry Design Review Panel (PHDRP) — appointed by Landcom to monitor the historic Prince Henry development site
Randwick City Council — Development Application
NSW State Heritage Department — approval required given the project’s proximity to the historic “Flowers” building.
Randwick Council — the Construction Certificate was particularly involved with difficulties around strict adherence to; setbacks, height and floor space ratios and alignments with the southern setback of the “Flowers” Building, a flat roof geometry and guides around the use of external colour and materials.

As a 23 year professional in wildlife control, I see hundreds of situations every month with nuisance animals going into places that they don't belong. Some of those places are more common than others. I recently addressed a skunk infestation for a residence in Glen Ellyn, IL. The challenge involved a family of skunks that had taken residence under the front concrete stoop. Concrete and skunks are never a good mix because concrete is porous, when a skunk sprays the odors penetrate and will permeate for months and months as the weather gets warm or humidity rises.
My approach was methodical and focused on humane Glen Ellyn skunk removal.
The process began with the strategic placement of live traps near the stoop, ensuring minimal distress to the animals. These traps are industry standard, designed to safely contain the skunks without harm. Regular monitoring of these traps was a critical part of the process, ensuring the skunks were not confined for an extended period.
Upon successful capture, the skunks were removed and the animal proofing work was next on the list.
Skunk exclusion work, is a critical component in preventing future infestations of skunks, raccoons or opossums. This involved a thorough inspection and sealing of potential entry points with steel mesh buried underground at a specific depth and angle. Skunk-proofing is a vital step in ensuring long-term resolution to wildlife intrusions.
Once the skunks were gone and the area was sealed, we performed an ozone treatment to the basement with a special filter to sub the air, destroying the skunk spray's odor molecules from the air. Typically the reason people discover skunks under the stoop to begin with is because the odor from spraying.
For residents in and around Glen Ellyn experiencing similar issues, we offer humane, effective, and affordable wildlife control solutions. Expertise in skunk removal and exclusion is just a call away!

Green Subway Bathroom Remodel — Clean Lines, Smart Design, Built to Last
A fresh, modern bathroom transformation — completed in just 6 working days, with full protection, precision, and code-level installation from start to finish.
Scope of Work:
? Walls: 3x9 green subway tile set with perfect geometry — clean lines, laser-straight levels, and flawless symmetry.
? Flooring: 24x24 porcelain installed over a Schluter anti-vibration membrane for long-term durability and comfort.
? Waterproofing: Full Schluter + GoBoard waterproof system on all wet areas.
? Wall Prep: Walls were fully flattened for a perfect tile plane; plumbing was aligned so the faucet, shower head, and valve sit exactly on one vertical line.
? Niche & Window: Precise 45° miter cuts with pattern continuation — creating a “hidden niche” effect that blends seamlessly into the wall.
? Lighting: New wall-mounted light fixtures for balanced, soft illumination.
? Transitions: Bathroom floor brought level with the adjacent carpet with no transition strips — crisp, modern finish.
? Finishing: Silicone in all movement joints, new hardware, towel bar installation.
