When we met our client, she had just purchased a beautiful estate in Potomac, Maryland but she did not like layout of her backyard. Initially, she contacted Great American to create a safe place for her kids to play. Eventually, the project scope expanded to design and install a welcoming area to entertain and spend relaxing weekends at home. Our first project involved creating a level area for the playset using boulder walls and lush plantings. A couple of years later we returned to renovate the pool, wall, and porch and patio. The existing concrete porch needed to be demolished and replaced. We added a roof over the porch area with metal roofing, columns, recessed lighting and ceiling fans. The retaining wall was redone with a natural stone veneer, flagstone cap, and low-voltage lighting. The porch and pool deck were all covered with silver grey travertine with a flagstone border. We added metal railing above the wall for fall protection, and lush landscaping to make it inviting all season long.

We recently had the pleasure of completing a remarkable backyard makeover that presented us with some exciting challenges and opportunities for creativity. Our clients wanted to revamp their backyard, focusing on enhancing functionality and creating a low-maintenance, beautiful outdoor space. One of the main objectives was to expand the usable patio area without the need to tear out and pour new concrete. To achieve this, we carefully considered the existing patio curves, respecting their unique shape and making the entire area look intentionally designed. Additionally, drainage was a crucial concern. We took the initiative to install proper drainage solutions to prevent water pooling and ensure the longevity of the space. Our client, an MMA enthusiast, had a specific request to elevate his training experience. To accommodate this, we designed a raised platform with putting-green turf, providing the ideal spot for his Body Opponent bag while maintaining a clean and mud-free training area. For the plant-loving homeowner, we incorporated beautiful Austin limestone chopped block raised beds with a central irrigation system. This resulted in aesthetically pleasing and low-maintenance raised planters, adding vibrant greenery and a touch of nature to the backyard. We utilized the pallet of paver bricks they already had on hand to create practical hardscape walking pads, connecting different areas of the backyard while seamlessly blending with the design. Despite the challenges, we successfully turned their backyard into a fully functional and inviting outdoor retreat. The space now embraces their passions, meets their desires, and offers a tranquil escape for relaxation and enjoyment.

Initially this master bath was home to a small standard size shower and linen closet that left too little vanity space on one side of the room, and awkward open space on the other. Our professional design team started with a clean slate to maximize the floor plan and give these homeowners not only an updated master bath, but a master bath that better fit the space and their functional needs. Now the homeowners have plenty of vanity space along with a lavish shower and soaking tub for relaxation.

This master bedroom suite was initially wanting for cohesiveness and seating options that would allow our clients to relax from their days of traveling. We began with a color palette that was "spa" like and would allow them to rest, both in the bedroom and sitting room. They loved the neutral hues with splashes of green & accents of yellow throughout. We used an existing bed and dresser but added custom upholstered pieces along with case goods. We painted all of the surfaces, including the trim, a clean color palette, with the exception of the sitting area ceiling & the accent wall behind the bed that showcases a monochromatic wall covering. Not only was designing the bedroom portion a priority, but giving them ample options for sitting or laying to relax was of utmost importance. The sitting area already had an abundance of natural sunlight from the windows, so we added custom stationary drapery panels, mostly neutral furniture pieces, and pops of yellow with the lamp and accessories. The clients are now very happy to use their master suite more efficiently and be able to relax when they come home from long trips! Michael Hunter Photography

Q: Tell us about your Valencia floor. A: Out of all our interior selections, we began with our choice of flooring. Even though the Valencia Walnut flooring is softer than most wood species, we are careful with it, and Walnut is what we wanted. Our Walnut floor feels almost cushiony underfoot compared to Oak or Hickory. We are careful not to drag furniture over it and we do not wear our outside shoes in the house. I’ve done a lot of work with Walnut so I knew how it would perform. The feeling you get from Walnut is worth putting up with the risk of damage. I love that it’s like a piece of beautiful furniture. We lie on it and do our stretches on it. It’s super comfortable. The Walnut flooring is the significant feature for creating the luxurious, warm and cozy atmosphere for the house we were wanting.

Inspiration for a contemporary kitchen remodel in Denver

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated a voluntary program for manufacturers of decorative wood burning fireplaces to encourage them to produce clean wood-burning appliances that reduce air pollution. Dare to design... the fireplace of your dreams, while being environmentally friendly. The FP7-LM Antoinette wood fireplace already qualifies for phase II of that program which aims emission levels at or below the target of 5.1 g/kg (approximately 70 percent cleaner than unqualified models). Thus, you can benefit from a product with low particulate emissions. Moreover, another advantage of this Valcourt fireplace is its guillotine door that disappears to allow you to load wood on the fire or relax with the crackle of the open fireplace. The fire screen is also on a guillotine mechanism so you can close it when the ceramic glass door is open. Why Antoinette? Finally, a positive historical reference to the guillotine! The guillotine door and clean front gives you the flexibility to design your fireplace in any way that suits you. The Antoinette is a truly versatile fireplace and is all about giving you the ability to design your dreaming fireplace.

The new dining area is the corner of the L between the newly redesigned kitchen and the newly furnished Living Room. So, color, pattern, and look/feel flow were vital. Working simultaneously on the Living Room and Dining Room, we had to make sure textures, patterns, finishes, and colors flowed but didn’t “Match.” We found a large, extendable, trestle-base dining table, in a natural wood finish. We talked the client into tall host chairs in a fabric she initially hated and grew to love: a multi-colored Ikat pattern incorporating the blues and aquas from the other rooms. Low, mid-century-inspired chairs in slate blue velvet, upholstered legs, and gold footers grace the sides.
