Legendary Escapes PoolsNautical-themed hybrid swimming pool with raised spa, sunshelf, slide, grotto, and pizza oven
(September 2013) – Ask the Pool Guy and his team at Legendary Escapes recently unveiled the newest Legendary Escape, a stunning nautical-themed hybrid swimming pool. The hand-carved concrete waterfall, rock slide, and grotto are the focal point of this incredible project, and designer and builder Al Curtis has truly outdone himself this time. Behind the waterfall sits a grotto that seats 8-10 people comfortably. The waterfall, slide, and grotto area come complete with intricate details and additions that perfectly play into the project’s theme. An immense amount of creativity, talent, and skill is required to take ordinary materials like vinyl and concrete and turn them into the outstanding backyards that Curtis creates, but these details allow his creativity to shine in a different light. Curtis immerses himself completely in just one or two projects at a time, which allows him the opportunity to add those intricate details that take his extraordinary projects to the next level. Some of the details in the grotto area of this hybrid project include real ship portholes that open and close, as well as carvings and lanterns to add visual interest inside of the grotto.
The project also includes a raised spillover spa and a sunshelf with a bubbling water feature. The sunshelf has steps leading into the main body of the pool, giving swimmers an easy entry point if they don’t feel the urge to jump off the top of the waterfall or take a ride down the hand-carved, hand-tiled slide. The shelf has just enough water to allow shallow wading or lounging, and the pebbled finish provides a perfect place to set a lounge chair without worrying about damaging the vinyl liner. With the spa nearby, this whole end of the pool is perfect for relaxing, talking, or watching the kids while they swim.
This incredible hybrid swimming pool also includes a poolside pizza oven, so fresh, stone-fired pizza is never far away. The brick oven can cook a pizza in about 90 seconds, and produces authentic, outstanding pizzas. The homeowners have spent years perfecting their pizza crust and sauce recipes, as well as growing their own tomatoes and basil. The pizza oven adds another element of their own personality, and makes this project even more perfect for them. With a built-in countertop, it’s easy to get a couple of pies going at one time, or to prep ingredients for personal pizzas.
The homeowners are very family-oriented and love to have friends and family over to their home. During the construction process, the Legendary Escapes crew met several friends and family members who stopped in for some quality time and to check out the progress of the pool. The finished product is a perfect place for entertaining, and it feels very comfortable and welcoming. With the sunshelf, spa, grotto, poolside seating, and the pool itself, there are plenty of different places to sit or soak and have conversations or splash around.
Curtis is incredibly proud of this project, and he has high hopes for it. He was recently named a Master of Design by Pool & Spa News for a hybrid swimming pool he built in Brighton, MI. This new, nautical hybrid pool fits in beautifully with his portfolio, but also stands out as extraordinary. Metropolis Drafting and Construction IncWhat do you do when your master suite addition is limited in width. It is not an issue for the bedroom since it enjoys the full width of the 16' but what about the bathroom and closet that you need to be grand in design as well?
In this bathroom you can see the solution to this age-old question, how to make a narrow space look grand.
The end of this bathroom boosts a huge 9' wide by 6' deep shower wet area with a freestanding tub on one side and a bench, niche and window on the other.
The vaulted ceiling above has 3 large skylights with one of them directly above the shower area. The skylights provide a huge amount of natural light that cancels any need for artificial lighting to be used during the daytime.
The main wall is dark Pietra grigio porcelain book matched slabs, while the sides are 48"x48" off-white porcelain tiles. The plumbing fixtures are Kohler Anthem digital control for the minimalistic look.
Right before you get into the wet area you will have a niche with a built-in seating area the doubles as a storage/laundry cabinet and two thick shelves made of Alder wood to compliment the vanity, the beam and the water closet door.
A 10' vanity with a large 9.5' mirror is a great trick to create a sensation of space in the narrow 5' passageway.
The final touch is the hidden water closet, the space was taken from the Walk-in closet entry area to hide the toilet from the beautiful spa looking bathroom.
The last item to be mentioned is the heated floor that is controlled by a timer to make sure the flooring is warm to the touch on the cold winter nights.
The walk-in closet was custom built to accommodate all the client’s storage requirements, the different deeper and shallower niches that were created by space added to the bathroom are used for shallow wall led mirror or a deeper suites hanger and the crown jewel of this closet the steam closet by LG that provide the capabilities of a steamer / dry-cleaning in your private closet space.
A center drawer cabinet with glass top cabinets with built-in LED strips and puck lights create a lovely ambient lighting if needed and show casing the different perfumes and handbags.
Talking about show casing, how about the his/hers shoes towers on each side of the cabinets in the middle?
The master bedroom is a bit more craftsman and cozy.
Whitewashed shiplap on the vaulted ceiling creates a more of a countryside look with vast number of windows and a sliding door to allow both eastern and western light to penetrate the room.

My sister also wanted a lovely dressing room with custom cabinets, drawers, a vanity and jewellery cabinet, along with ample storage for all of her shoes.
With the design layout as it was, the functionality of the house did not meet their needs. As an Interior Design Professional with over 10 years of experience in helping
homeowners live beautifully, I could definitely see the potential.
They loved the Burlington area and I knew that they
could have what they desired if only they could see for themselves. So, I talked them into hiring my services and we created a vision with a completely new design plan in 3D.
What I created for them vastly exceeded their expectations, and now they extremely happy living in their 'forever home'.
Pinnacle Design & RemodelingIn this Tschida Construction project we did not one, but TWO two-story additions. The other phase was the butler's pantry, laundry room, mudroom, and massive storage closet. This second addition off of the previous kitchen double the kitchen's footprint, added an extremely large dining area, and a new deck that has an awesome indoor/outdoor window connection. Another cool feature is the double dishwashers anchored by a beautiful farmhouse ceramic sink. A under cabinet beverage fridge, huge windows overlooking the wetlands, and statement backsplash also make this space functional and unique. We also continued the lvp throughout the main level, refinished their fireplace built in wall and got all new furnishings. Talk about a transformation!
Drury DesignMaybe you can relate to these empty nesters who reached out to us to design and build a new kitchen for their current and long term needs. They do lots of entertaining, have an extensive wine collection and enjoy welcoming more grandchildren into the family. Both cook, although he prefers his grill. They wanted their new kitchen to be an open space that is easier to move around in. They were also looking forward to more storage and new, state-of-the-art appliances.
Design objectives:
-New layout to accommodate large groups for frequent entertaining
-Big island to seat as many people as possible
Improve traffic flow by omitting a counter peninsula by the family room and other cabinet barriers
-Main cooktop to face visitors with point-of-use spices, utensils, pots & pans nearby
-Multiple cooking & refrigeration appliances
-Plan for as much countertop space as possible for multiple cooks
-Dedicated spaces needed for wine, liquor, cold drinks & decorative glassware
-Incorporate special details such as thick or waterfall countertops, unique backsplash, wood accents
-Need better task, ambient and general lighting
-Make it beautiful – a kitchen the homeowners could be proud of
-Seamlessly join kitchen with breakfast room, given load-bearing wall & various ceiling heights
-Ensure the large, newly opened space remains intimate and inclusive
-Determine how to best utilize the breakfast room, given limited availability of wall space with two sets of French doors and a large window
-Relocating two ventilation ducts currently in a wall to be removed
-Incorporate multiple appliances while adding functional storage
-Integrate special details that wouldn’t be lost in a large room
-Utilize multiple finishes and colors that provide continuity
Design solutions:
-The wall between the kitchen & breakfast nook was completely removed – the structural beam was shortened, providing the largest opening possible
-One small wall section remained intact to relocate ductwork, which conveniently created an alcove for the dual refrigerator armoire
-Two islands in the same finish visually join the elongated room
-The cooking island includes necessary point-of-use storage along with a steam oven and additional storage on the opposite side
The wide cooking island allows for two cooks to comfortably share the counter space, allowing casual interaction
-The second island fills the center of the former breakfast room; tall cabinets in a contrasting finish flank the French doors and provide visual balance
-The sizable second island provides seating for six on a conversation-conducive curve. It houses freezer drawers, a microwave drawer, an under-counter refrigerator, plus additional storage
-Docking station inside drawer
-Two cabinet styles in three finishes provide continuity, balance and interest in the large room
While the clients didn’t have a specific vision of the remodeled space, they were completely open to new ideas and knew which features they wanted when they saw them. They were truly doing the project for their own enjoyment and that of their family and guests. We’re happy to know they are thrilled with the end result. In fact, we had so much fun working together we’re now talking about a new project!

JRP Design & RemodelOur client had been living in her beautiful lakeside retreat for about 3 years. All around were stunning views of the lake and mountains, but the view from inside was minimal. It felt dark and closed off from the gorgeous waterfront mere feet away. She desired a bigger kitchen, natural light, and a contemporary look. Referred to JRP by a subcontractor our client walked into the showroom one day, took one look at the modern kitchen in our design center, and was inspired!
After talking about the frustrations of dark spaces and limitations when entertaining groups of friends, the homeowner and the JRP design team emerged with a new vision. Two walls between the living room and kitchen would be eliminated and structural revisions were needed for a common wall shared a wall with a neighbor. With the wall removals and the addition of multiple slider doors, the main level now has an open layout.
Everything in the home went from dark to luminous as sunlight could now bounce off white walls to illuminate both spaces. Our aim was to create a beautiful modern kitchen which fused the necessities of a functional space with the elegant form of the contemporary aesthetic. The kitchen playfully mixes frameless white upper with horizontal grain oak lower cabinets and a fun diagonal white tile backsplash. Gorgeous grey Cambria quartz with white veining meets them both in the middle. The large island with integrated barstool area makes it functional and a great entertaining space.
The master bedroom received a mini facelift as well. White never fails to give your bedroom a timeless look. The beautiful, bright marble shower shows what's possible when mixing tile shape, size, and color. The marble mosaic tiles in the shower pan are especially bold paired with black matte plumbing fixtures and gives the shower a striking visual.
Layers, light, consistent intention, and fun! - paired with beautiful, unique designs and a personal touch created this beautiful home that does not go unnoticed.

DENALI BUILDERS & DesignCustom Barrier-Free Bathroom Remodel
We recently had the honor of remodeling this bathroom for a local veteran to make his daily routine easier and more comfortable. The main goal was to transform a standard bathroom into a fully handicap-accessible space. We designed a custom, curbless walk-in shower that allows a wheelchair to roll right in without any bumps or barriers in the way. By removing the old tub and door, we opened up the entire room, giving him the freedom and independence he deserves.
The design isn't just functional—it’s beautiful. We used large-format marble tiles on the walls and a slip-resistant pebble floor in the shower for a natural, high-end look. To make sure it was safe, we installed sturdy, modern grab bars and custom recessed niches to keep soap and shampoo within easy reach. We even added a sleek linear drain and a rain shower head to give it that luxury spa feel.
