We recently had the pleasure of completing a remarkable backyard makeover that presented us with some exciting challenges and opportunities for creativity. Our clients wanted to revamp their backyard, focusing on enhancing functionality and creating a low-maintenance, beautiful outdoor space. One of the main objectives was to expand the usable patio area without the need to tear out and pour new concrete. To achieve this, we carefully considered the existing patio curves, respecting their unique shape and making the entire area look intentionally designed. Additionally, drainage was a crucial concern. We took the initiative to install proper drainage solutions to prevent water pooling and ensure the longevity of the space. Our client, an MMA enthusiast, had a specific request to elevate his training experience. To accommodate this, we designed a raised platform with putting-green turf, providing the ideal spot for his Body Opponent bag while maintaining a clean and mud-free training area. For the plant-loving homeowner, we incorporated beautiful Austin limestone chopped block raised beds with a central irrigation system. This resulted in aesthetically pleasing and low-maintenance raised planters, adding vibrant greenery and a touch of nature to the backyard. We utilized the pallet of paver bricks they already had on hand to create practical hardscape walking pads, connecting different areas of the backyard while seamlessly blending with the design. Despite the challenges, we successfully turned their backyard into a fully functional and inviting outdoor retreat. The space now embraces their passions, meets their desires, and offers a tranquil escape for relaxation and enjoyment.

We first installed this Garden 18 years ago, this is a fairly Minor refresh and upgrade but it came out amazingly. Studio 1200 partnered with this family as they looked at numerous old houses in their search for the perfect home to settle into with their young family. Our client’s wish list included a 3-car garage and a nice kitchen with lots of light and space for two microwaves. In 2011, they purchased a 1950’s Center Hall Colonial that had good bones, but had not been well maintained. To help create their dream home, we gutted the existing house, designed multiple additions, and reorganized the existing spaces so that the house worked properly for them as a family. We also selected all of the interior finishes and worked with the owners on selecting all of the decorative lighting. The biggest structural change included reconfiguring the main stair in order to create a more gracious two-story front entry hall. In the existing conditions, the stair protruded into the living room on teh first floor and left a tiny hallway on the second floor. The entire renovation included a master suite with three additional bedrooms and two baths, a home office and laundry on the second floor; living room, dining room, bar, kitchen, family room, mudroom, and 3-car garage on the first floor; and a comfortable family room, gym, full bathroom, bar, and storage space in the basement. The exterior improvements included new siding, windows, roofing, a new portico, and dormers. The patio and landscaping remain a work in progress.

This full yard remodel was designed to enhance both function and curb appeal. Custom patina metal planters were installed in the backyard and front yard to add visual interest and a modern, timeless touch. Faux turf was incorporated to replace high-traffic areas and eliminate persistent muddy spots, creating a clean and low-maintenance landscape solution. Special care was taken to preserve existing mature trees, with custom turf cutouts around established trunks to allow for proper growth and drainage. The result is a cohesive, pet-friendly outdoor space that stays green year-round while maintaining the natural character of the property.

The kitchen island with integrated gas cooktop now faces the expanded living and dining area, creating a continuous and highly functional main floor layout. As part of the structural renovation, multiple interior walls were removed to transform the previously segmented floor plan into a large open space. In addition to removing the wall between the kitchen and dining area, another wall separating the dining room from the living room was also removed. Structural beams were installed to properly support the load while allowing the entire main level to remain open. This transformation created a long, uninterrupted sightline from one exterior window to another across the house, allowing natural light to travel through the entire space. The new layout significantly improves circulation, visibility, and interaction between the kitchen, dining, and living areas while maintaining the modern functionality of the kitchen island workspace.
