The Ackerman-Dater House was built in 1745 and is the recipient of the prestigious State of New Jersey Historic Preservation Award. Ensuing years had taken their toll on the house and major intervention was needed when the owners engaged Morpurgo Architects to restore their home. Our collaboration has protected and preserved this house, perpetuating its continued use. Today, the Ackerman-Dater House is a historic residence that incorporates various contextual building periods, each in harmony with the original, producing a cohesive whole. With the sensitively-placed addition of a new wing, compatible with the style of the existing architecture, we enhanced the Ackerman-Dater House and ensured that it would meet the functional needs of a family living in current times. Preservation of the Ackerman-Dater House maintains the character and history of our mutual past, benefiting the entire community. For our exceptional restoration, client, contractor and Morpurgo Architects were presented with the NJ State and the Bergen County Historic Preservation Awards.

The available outdoor space in any major metropolitan area is typically limited. The client was dedicated to increasing the amount of available outdoor space for entertaining and planting. The sustainable efforts that went into the interior renovations were continued in the exterior spaces with a series of green roof gardens. The lower level terrace features two separate spaces it was the largest. Directly out the glass rear doors of the house is a paved area using local materials that have high albedo. A couple of stairs down leads to a seating area surrounded by River Birch, ferns, and vines such as Virginia Creeper and Trumpet Honeysuckle which create a screen from the neighbor’ s yard. The second level garden is an extensive roof garden with approximately fifteen inches of soils. The space was planted with a variety of native meadow plants such as Purple Coneflower and Beardstongue, and Switchgrass. Fruit trees were planted in several corten steel containers. After a couple of years the client decided he wanted more use of the space so the meadow was thinned out and a path to the end was installed as well as creeping sedums in between the steppers. A spiral stair case leads to the upper level garden. When you reach the top of the stairs in the summer months a vegetable garden full of tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers thrives in planting boxes. Beyond the garden is another seating area. At the front end of the building a line of Eastern Red Cedars is planted to create a privacy wall from the neighbors across the street. The plant palette is predominately native species that can withstand the tough conditions of the limited soil depth and the heat of the sun. Plants such as Bee Balm, Prickly Pear, and Wild Petunia have done exceptionally well on the green roof. When needed they can be irrigated using the house’s grey water system. Inspiration for an exterior home remodel in Other

Though it’s located on 5.5 acres of pristine oceanfront in Southampton, this project came with inherent challenges. The clients had purchased the property with approvals in place, which locked in the size and location of the main house and accessory structure. The existing permits allowed for a 12,000 square foot traditional house with six bedrooms, yet the clients were looking to fit 11 bedrooms into the same footprint. Furthermore, the family regularly hosts large-scale gatherings and needed ample space for entertaining including a dining room that seats 50. The site boasts waterfront exposures on both the front and back sides of the property but shifting dunes had completely blocked the first-floor view toward the ocean. In collaboration with a team of consultants, BMA determined that the tall dunes had grown unstable as ocean winds piled sand onto the site over decades. This created an opportunity to strategically re-sculpt the dunes for stability, with the added benefit of an improved view from the house. The view sequence was choreographed from the moment a visitor approaches the house, where a handful of stairs rise above the floodplain and lead to a dramatic courtyard. Moving toward the entry, views through the living area reveal the glimmering ocean beyond. Seen from the rear, the double-height living area anchors the volume, its minimalist grandeur framed in light limestone and crisp black wood. The design strategy ensures that water is visible from every major space in the house. Despite the restrictive parameters that accompanied the project, gracious proportions and dramatic spaces transcend the initial limitations, giving the home a luxurious resort-like glamour. Interior spaces flow to the exterior, creating a house that engages with its site and celebrates the indoor-outdoor lifestyle for which the Hamptons are known.

On this project we were commissioned to create a kitchen which optimized storage for our clients who were unable to make use of higher-up storage. This includes many drawers for dishes, including plates, bowls, and other commonly-used kitchen items. Overall, this was a large U-shaped kitchen with a conveniently located double-oven in the right-hand corner and a custom, stainless steel backsplash behind the hood. Another notable feature was a leftover wall as a result of the U-shaped kitchen and location of the kitchen table. We, in turn, developed a clever solution for the small, leftover wall by creating a piece of furniture acting as a buffet hutch piece with a wood countertop matching the cabinetry allowing it to seamlessly flow with the aesthetic of the kitchen. The major benefit to the customer with the space was taking an area that was too small to be a room but too large to be wasted and to make the space serve them in a functional capacity.
