The design of this refined mountain home is rooted in its natural surroundings. Boasting a color palette of subtle earthy grays and browns, the home is filled with natural textures balanced with sophisticated finishes and fixtures. The open floorplan ensures visibility throughout the home, preserving the fantastic views from all angles. Furnishings are of clean lines with comfortable, textured fabrics. Contemporary accents are paired with vintage and rustic accessories. To achieve the LEED for Homes Silver rating, the home includes such green features as solar thermal water heating, solar shading, low-e clad windows, Energy Star appliances, and native plant and wildlife habitat. The original Kitchen in this home was extremely cluttered and disorganized. In the process of renovating the entire home this space was a major priority to address. We chose to create a central barrel vault that structured the entire space. The French range is centered on the barrel vault. By adding a table to the center of the room it insures this is a family centered environment. The table becomes a working space, an eating space, a homework table, etc. This is a throwback to the original farm house kitchen table that was the center of mid-western life for generations. The room opens up to a Living Room and Music Room area that make the space incorporated with all of the family’s daily activity. The space also has mirror-imaged doors that open to the exterior patio and pool deck area. This effectively allows for the circulation of the family from the pool deck to the interior as if it was another room in the house. The contrast of the original disorganization and clutter to the cleanly detailed, highly organized space is a huge transformation for this home.

In the design stages many details were incorporated in this classic kitchen to give it dimension since the surround cabinets, counters and backsplash were white. Polished nickel plumbing, hardware and custom grilles on feature cabinets along with the island pendants add shine, while finer details such as inset doors, furniture kicks on non-working areas and lofty crown details add a layering effect in the millwork. Surround counters as well as 3" x 6" backsplash tile are Calacutta Gold stone, while island counter surface is walnut. Conveniences include a 60" Wolf range, a 36" Subzero refrigerator and freezer and two farmhouse sinks by Kallista. The kitchen also boasts two dishwashers (one in the island and one to the right of the sink cabinet under the window) and a coffee bar area with a built-in Miele. Photo by Pete Maric.

The homeowners desired an outdoor space that felt more rustic than their refined interior spaces, but still related architecturally to their house. Cement plaster support arbor columns provide enough of visual tie to the existing house exterior. Oversized wood beams and rafter members provide a unique outdoor atmosphere.
