The homeowners wanted a sleek, contemporary kitchen that didn't feel cold, and still worked with the style of their classic, red brick colonial home. The design team, consisting of Bilotta senior designer, RitaLuisa Garcés and Billy Ceglia of Billy Ceglia Designs, opted for the warmth of traditional walnut cabinetry done in an exaggerated shaker style with ultra-thin stiles and rails and light textured laminate cabinets with distinct horizontal graining. The cabinetry they selected is Bilotta’s contemporary Artcraft line – European style cabinets manufactured in Canada. This combination of colors and textures helped solve another design issue: a long narrow space that opened directly into the family room. Cabinet colors and finishes helped to create the illusion of width in the space by situating the light cabinetry in an “L” across the rear wall and window wall of the space and “bookending” it with the full height walnut units that read more as paneling than cabinetry when viewed from the adjoining family room. The large simple island outfitted with Donghia counter stools, allows for an uninterrupted work space, storage of tabletop items, and also houses a “snack zone” for the client’s children with cabinetry and roll-outs for snacks, a microwave, and a beverage center all within easy reach, but outside of the main work area. The custom stainless steel exhaust hood and handcrafted tile backsplash also add subtle visual interest to the space, reinforcing the idea that the back walls of the kitchen recede into the background creating the illusion of more space. The centerpiece of the breakfast room is the multi light, hand blown chandelier from Niche Modern hanging above a blue lacquered breakfast table with stainless steel detailing and vintage Saarinen dining chairs. Retro home bowling alley installed in a family recreation building in central Minnesota. Most of the bowling components were salvaged from an old commercial bowling center, and were restored to like-new, or in some technical aspects, better-than-new, condition. The over-lane ball return riser, rack, and capping were originally manufactured in the 1950s. The automatic pinsetter machines are Brunswick A-2 models, which were totally dismantled, cleaned, painted, and rebuilt piece-by-piece with the addition of many new parts. The masking units are Brunswick Gold Crown single-lane models, which were refinished with Granny Smith Apple Green vinyl, and outfitted with a modern LED "pindicator" system. The bowling alley features built-in shoe and ball storage, and a restored manual scorer's table with custom scoresheets.

There is always an easy way out. A simple, uninteresting solution that neither challenges nor engages the mind or the soul. The 50s rambler is a simple structure that lacks character and charm. Its greatest contribution to architecture was the single floor living concept. We came to this project because the homeowners believed their home had the potential to be something more and had invested their time and creativity into developing ideas for what it could become. We embraced the opportunity to collaborate with the homeowner to create a home that was unique, thoughtful, customized for their use, and cared for. The curved exterior shell of this addition wraps around to accommodate a screen porch under a lifted peak. Inside, the new kitchen follows the curve with custom cabinets and honed granite creating a dynamite space for a chef. Shade tree, bamboo and honed slate flooring weave the living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen together. Walls jog and jump with color and dimension. One of the major challenges was to ensure that the space could accommodate large family gatherings of 12 – 16 people yet still feel intimate and comfortable for two people when guests were not present. As you move through the home you will notice that none of the spaces feel cavernous or restrictive. Careful attention was paid to mapping out the space to create areas that were cozy and appropriate while taking traffic patterns into consideration. The dining room entrances are staggered which creates the illusion of two separate spaces. The warm red halogen lights further encourage a sense of scale. One can easily extend the dining room table to accommodate a large crowd without causing guests to feel uncomfortable or confined. The use of color is an often noted feature in our projects. Our philosophy is that the selection of color for the walls is as important as the selection of all the other materials. Color influences everything we do and gives us direction for how to feel, where to go, where to stop, and how to interact. It is the binding component between all the elements in a design. It bends, bounces, twists, manipulates light and the eye, and is required to fully develop and design a space. This project was an exciting and rewarding challenge, and we are grateful to the homeowners for asking us to be a part of it and to opening up their home to the public. White shaker, charcoal-grey island kitchen, and walk you through unique design features it possesses. Hypoallergenic Finish Solutions One of the biggest priorities in this design was its hypoallergenic characteristics, so we selected solid maple for the door panels and low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) “Pune Bond” plywood for the interior with solid maple drawer boxes. The finishes are: water-based post-catalyzed polyurethane and hypoallergenic grey stain with a clear coat. Eco-friendliness On top of our aspirations to make hypoallergenic and low VOC material choices, we strive to make our designs highly reusable/recyclable and use local materials and labor to keep CO2 emission as low as possible. This kitchen was manufactured at our factory in Etobicoke, including production of door panels. Durability All our kitchens are practical and as low maintenance as they could be. We use highly durable MDF and hardwoods along with reliable finishes, Blum soft-close hardware on doors and drawers. We achieved this goal when designing this kitchen by choosing solid maple doors, plywood interiors, dovetail drawers, Blum soft-close door hinges and drawer slides. The appliance garages have Aventos parallel lifts. All hardware have a lifetime warranty! Use of space It is crucial that you are able to utilize the space at its maximum capacity as well as it is convenient to work on. As you can see here, we adhered to the ‘work triangle’ rule, making it easy to move between the main prep/cooking components: fridge, cooktop/oven and sink. All ‘hot spots’ of this kitchen are at your arm’s stretch. We incorporated appliance garages, waste management systems, tray dividers, wine racks and last but not the least, a combination of shallow and deep drawers. Esthetics A funny thing about esthetics is that no designer will ever tell you that he priorities esthetic qualities over practicality or cost-efficiency, because we do not. However, this is what sells the kitchen, makes your house unique, increases its value on the real estate market and just makes you feel great! That is why esthetics can’t be ignored; it is just as important as everything else!

Westbrook Restorations manufactured the fascia in our carpenter shop. This home has 4 gable ends with many of the same components seen here.
