This newly remodeled home was transformed top to bottom. It is, as all good art should be “A little something of the past and a little something of the future.” We kept the old world charm of the Tudor style, (a popular American theme harkening back to Great Britain in the 1500’s) and combined it with the modern amenities and design that many of us have come to love and appreciate. In the process, we created something truly unique and inspiring.

Living room - contemporary loft-style medium tone wood floor living room idea in Austin with gray walls

Set within a rural parcel in the heart of Northern California wine country, the Summerhill Residence consists of 3 separate buildings (a main house, guest house and detached garage) that are situated to maximize the connection between the natural and the man-made. The distinction between the indoors and the outdoors is intentionally blurred as interior and exterior spaces extend in all directions to the gently rolling hills of the Sonoma landscape beyond. Cooking essentials are all within reach for the serious chefs in this home! Faced with a cramped eat-in kitchen our job was to both maximize and open up the space. By relocating the refrigerator and surrounding it with pantry cabinets, we were able to create more counter space and allow space for two chefs. Warm stained-wood open corner shelving was installed to display the chefs’ favorite items and keep them right at an arm's reach. The breakfast table is now positioned at the window, giving diners a view of the beautiful backyard. The finishes (Executive Cabinetry - Putnam door style in Alabaster paint; Belgian Blue Satin quartz counters by Alleanza) blend seamlessly with the rest of the home.

The geometric lines of the home and formal gardens are repeated rhythmically throughout the landscape. Bluestone steps, supported by fieldstone slabs, mirror the angles and proportions of the home's architecture, and create a continuous line with a fieldstone wall and hedge made of boxwood shrubs.
In this setting, (bluestone/)natural stone steps and a natural rock wall allow the garden design to maximize the existing contours of the landscape. Leading from the home and outdoor dining room to the pool and entertaining areas, these broad, low exterior bluestone/stone steps are easily navigated and don't require a railing.
The effect is a bluestone stairway that feels modern and elegant, and reflects the formal garden style seen throughout the landscape. Photo by Linda Oyama Bryan

J Hill Interiors transformed a dated downtown condo with little very functionality to offer, into a dream kitchen and bath that has both form and function. The client wanted something elegant and sophisticated but also had to maximize space, storage and conform with their daily lifestyle. Construction done by KC Custom Remodeling.

Perched on Lake George in the Adirondacks, this sophisticated outdoor kitchen masterfully blends into its natural surroundings while maximizing functionality for entertaining. The thoughtful U-shaped design ensures that everyone—whether cooking, prepping, or socializing—shares in the magnificent lake views that inspired the space.
The aesthetic harmony is achieved through carefully selected materials: rustic blue outdoor-rated NatureKast cabinetry echoes the lake's hues, while timber frame beams and outdoor-rated white quartz countertops create a seamless transition between built and natural environments. Deep drawers and roll-out cabinetry provide abundant storage while maintaining the space's elegant profile.
The layout is a study in purposeful zoning: one area dedicated to prep work, another to cooking—featuring a grill, smoker, warming drawer, and space for a portable pizza oven, all serviced by a ceiling-mounted hood. The opposite side houses a two-drawer refrigerator, under-counter refrigerator, wet sink, and waste management.
Connecting seamlessly to the indoor kitchen through pass-through windows with adjacent counter space and storage, this outdoor entertainment hub transforms lakeside cooking into an immersive experience. Every element has been carefully considered to create a space that's both functional for serious cooking and perfect for casual gatherings, all while celebrating its stunning Adirondack setting

Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects collaborated closely with the clients, our consultants, and local craftspeople to design a custom three-story home of native cedar, blackened steel, glass, rock, and cement. The house takes full advantage of a beautiful site on the shores of Lake Washington.

Situated on over 100 acres in the Piedmont region of Virginia, the home was oriented to maximize solar gain during the cold, winter months and wide overhangs were designed for the south side of the house to block the high sun in the summer. In addition, strategically placed fins provide shade while not obstructing the breathtaking views of the countryside.
