The owners of this property had a very specific look in mind for what was originally a remodel/addition project. On seeing the original concept sketches, however, they loved the design and decided to build a completely new house on the existing site.
Situated with views of the landmark Camelback Mountain, this Territorial is wholly appropriate to its context. Clean modern lines, deep set windows, and a significant use of stone and exposed wood sets the tone for this southwestern home. Massing and the juxtaposition of strong vertical with horizontal detail elements create drama while remaining true to the aesthetic. Custom-cut wood outriggers define the roofline, adding drama and contrast to the exterior elevations.
Privacy being a key component of the scope, the design incorporates a large interior courtyard beyond the rustic entry doors and thick exterior walls. Using a double-framed wall method provided the look of heavy adobe walls without the cost. Inside, intricate yet rough-hewn wooded trusses are a focal point in the living and dining rooms, with the tongue and groove ceilings stained to match. The steel hardware was designed specifically for use in this home.

Located on a steep slope, this arrival courtyard was created to welcome guests.
Lesson three discusses the methods used to unify a design so that rooms flow and make sense.

The exterior of this residence embodies the essence of Eisenhauer Woodworks' philosophy—harmoniously blending natural materials with meticulous craftsmanship. The façade features a rich tapestry of locally sourced timber, its warm hues and varied textures reflecting the surrounding Kootenay landscape. Large, strategically placed windows invite abundant natural light, seamlessly connecting the interior spaces with the outdoors. The design emphasizes simplicity and functionality, with clean lines and a thoughtful layout that respects the property's unique topography. This approach not only enhances the home's aesthetic appeal but also ensures it stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of traditional building methods and the natural environment.

This new 1,560 square foot, three bedroom, two bath residence replaces a Paradise, CA home destroyed in the 2018 Camp Fire. The owners wanted an attractive and modest house to live in while they built their dream home on an adjacent lot. The house will later be used as rental income and provide much needed housing in Paradise.
The back of the house faces west towards an excellent view of a stand of oaks that survived the fire. The large rear porch roof provides protection from unwanted glare and the setting summer sun, so the house does not overheat in the summer. The porch also extends the living space and provides excellent year round indoor/outdoor living. It is open framed with rafters so there is an expansive view to the forest and ample diffused daylight throughout the year. It also protects the home from prevailing weather patterns.
The open floor plan provides an outstanding space for entertaining guests with large windows bringing in the outdoors.
Even though the house is built on a sloped lot it is fully barrier free and employs universal design principles throughout including a curbless shower in the Primary Bath.
Several energy efficient materials and methods were used while staying within a modest construction budget. The roof uses a 12” energy heel to allow a consistent insulation blanket in the attic and blown-in blanket (BIB) insulation was used in the walls to provide an R-23 wall assembly, much better than code requirement and better than standard construction. A cool roof, foil backed roof sheathing, heat pump HVAC system, heat pump water heater, and a whole house fan round out the energy efficiency measures of this house.

Leather Description: Artisan Leathers beautifully evoke this time worn quality, unique to every individual piece, like the originals. To pure aniline leather crusts, already fully and carefully upholstered to the piece, a base color is created with multiple applications of waxes and oils, hand-worked by the leather Artisan. After drying, this craftsman then carefully builds-up the finish with an expert’s eye, and touch, to achieve an aged patina in just the right places to reflect the aged qualities only time, wear, and frequent care could have accomplished naturally. Every individual piece upholstered with Artisan Leather finishing methods is first beautifully built to the highest standards of quality. The leather is then hand-colored and aged to bespeak the loving touch of time, providing a quality antique appearance to a beautiful new piece of quality leather furniture. Every chair, sofa, or bench has its very own unique identity only these hand-crafted methods can provide, reflecting the presence of a time honored past.
True 100% top grain cowhide leather is characterized by variations in shade, texture, color and grain. Healed marks and scars are to be expected and enhance the natural beauty of the hides. These variations are normal and unique features of true genuine 100% top grain cowhide leather.
Frame Construction: Using traditional hand craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods to produce frames that are among the finest used in the upholstery business. Each frame is precisely cut and hand assembled using kilned dried lumber. Double dowels are utilized in all structural parts to form sturdy, long lasting joints. To complete construction and add stability to the frame, large precisely cut corner blocks are positioned at each corner where the greatest stress occurs using both glues and screws. Architect: Michael Morrow, Kinneymorrow Architecture
Builder: Galvas Construction
For this contemporary beach escape in the affluent resort community of Alys Beach, Florida, the team at E. F. San Juan constructed a series of unique Satina™ tropical hardwood screens that form parts of the home’s facade, railings, courtyard gate, and more. “Architect Michael Morrow of Kinneymorrow Architecture came to us with his design inspiration, and I have to say that we knocked it out of the park,” says E. F. San Juan’s president, Edward San Juan.
Challenges:
The seeming simplicity of this exterior facade is deceptively complex. The horizontal lines and spacing that Michael wanted to carry through the facade encompassed gates, shutters, screens, balcony rails, and rain shields had to be incredibly precise to fit seamlessly and remain intact through the years. “It’s always a challenge to execute contemporary details, as there is nowhere to hide imperfections,” says Michael. “The reality of being in a seaside climate compounded on top of that, especially working with wood.”
Solution:
The E. F. San Juan engineering department worked out the complex fabrication details required to make Michael’s design inspiration come together, and the team at Galvas Construction did an excellent job of installing all pieces to bring the plan to fruition. We used our trademarked Satina™ tropical hardwood to fabricate the facade and engineered tertiary attachment methods into the components to ensure longevity. “This was one of the most complex exteriors we have engineered, and, as always, we loved the challenge,” Edward says.
Michael adds, “The exterior woodwork on this project is the project, and so this one would not have been possible without E. F. San Juan. Collaborating was a joy, from working out the details to the exquisite realization. These folks have forgotten more about wood than most people will ever know in the first place!”
Thank you to Michael, Kinneymorrow, and the team at Galvas Construction for choosing E. F. San Juan.

A repaired ruin appearance, this stonework detail recalls Olde World masonry methods. Stone is presented for entry emphasis at the doorway. The stone is then carefully spotted throughout the remaining brick exterior, suggesting an aged masonry reconstruction.

Structural timber roofs create a comfortable yet open space through the main living area of the house. All other areas use conventional building methods with cosmetic timber detailing to maintain the timber frame theme while keeping the overall cost of the house within a reasonable budget.
The wood featured in this project is a pristine quality West Coast Douglas Fir. Each piece is cut free of heart centre, which means the timbers are cut around the core of the wood to avoid checking and twisting to ensure a clean finish and tight joinery. For added visual effect, the owners decided to use flared cedar logs for post locations at the entry of the house and in the main living area.
A classic design that works perfectly in its country setting, this home features clean lines and modern elements that will make it as relevant in 50 years as it is now.

This window replacement was a "new construction" method installation, which involved cutting into the stucco, removing the old windows, and repairing the stucco afterwards for a thin frame style. Simonton Daylightmax series windows with low-e 366 glass and tan colored nail fin frames were installed.
