There are several hundred bottles of 700 millimeter wine bottles on triple deep wine racks. There is also 150 bottles of magnum bottles on two deep wine racks. A wine bottle display row is featured about half way up. This fully refrigerated wine cellar is 14 feet long x 30 inches deep x 84 inches high. This bathroom was ‘phase 2’ of an earlier whole house renovation that we’d designed many years earlier. The ensuite design had to fit with the styling of the earlier extension, but was in the older, original part of the Edwardian home. It’s also a very small room measuring only 2m x 2m, with 2 existing doorways limiting wall space. The owners’ love of colour, texture and pattern led to the feature wall tiles being the starting point for the room. A plain white star tile has been instantly elevated with the use of a warm coloured grout. This is contrasted with the large format, flecked porcelain tile below. A hardwood recycled benchtop on the vanity continues the same benchtop material from the kitchen and family bathroom, as does the wall light to the side of the mirror - in this case being from Robert Gordan Interiors. Space and storage were key to this room functionally working. The sizes of the shower and vanity had to be millimetre perfect, and putting the sink on one side of the vanity freed up full drawers for storage. A semi recessed shaving cabinet and shower niche maximise storage without taking up extra room, as does the integrated toilet cistern.

I am a stickler for perfection and when I design I look at every little detail to the last millimetre in each space. None of this just happens - it takes many hours of planning, drawing, choosing just the right finishes, fabrics and wall paper, and then designing the furniture to fit the space perfectly and in the correct materials and fabrics. I designed this rug and chose the colours of the wool which was hand knotted in Tibet and took 3 months to make and ship to Cape Town. It is always such a delight when we roll out a rug we haven’t seen the end result of and we are so pleased with the way this one turned out. I chose a lovely patterned fabric for the backs of the dining chairs and had the end table chairs made in a double size so that two people can sit at the head if need be. The table is made of solid Oak which is sandblasted to show off the grain and has a light grey wash. The wall paper on the fireplace is very textured and adds depth to the room. The wall paper on the ceiling inside the bulkhead is iridescent and gives the ceiling a lovely glow. Our curtains are beautifully made and adds luxury and warmth. Never skimp on curtaining as badly made curtains can instantly cheapen a room. The light fitting is discreet when switched off so as not to detract from the stunning ocean views when the curtains are open.

Installing a stretch ceiling also naturally conceals the popcorn ceiling behind it, but in this case, was also used to conceal the wiring necessary to add ceiling lights in every room. The wiring was simply attached to the existing popcorn ceiling. Laqfoil stretch ceiling is supported around the perimeter only, by tracks, or profiles which are only about 0.75" thick. The ceiling membrane itself is less than one millimetre thick. We also added a small vector graphic, printed in each corner of the living room ceiling, for a unique aesthetic effect.

We constructed a suspended bulkhead above the island and covered it with red high gloss membrane, to visually separate the kitchen and living room while keeping the design's open concept. This also provided a supporting structure for 3 mini chandelier pendant lights. A red rose depicted on a black and white textured ground was chosen for the kitchen ceiling and applied using digital wide format printing technology, to tie the red, black and white colour scheme with the kitchen cabinets' texture.
