© Kim Schmidt The apartment loft is 1,020 sq ft with one dividing wall to designate areas for dining, living, sleeping, and office. The objective was to showcase the client's art collection and furniture as art and provide a comfortable & inviting living environment as well. There were two eating areas. We managed to do the breakfast area near the entry by the kitchen. The opening to the kitchen was disguised by an adjustable moving screen. The formal dining area was situated by a wall of windows facing West, which made it wonderful for sunset dinners. The custom floor lamps, designed by FR Gillette, were inspired by the great modernist European lighting of the 1930's and 1940's. The dining chairs and armchairs were upholstered in a variety of fabrics from Maharam, Pindler & Pindler, and Knoll. We filled the need for bookshelves with frosted plastic modular cubes from Design Within Reach.

We worked with the client on redesigning and rebuilding their back yard and garage, form scratch. The back deck is composite with steel primed and painted railings. The Chicago garage rooftop deck is modular tile and steel and cedar screening. The pergola is steel with retractable shade panels. The fire table is from Ore Designs. the patio is natural bluestone and the screens are custom metal.

Deck - contemporary deck idea in Austin

This Chicago rooftop deck has a wide open skyline view, and was a blank slate slate when we started the design. The aluminum powder coated pergola is lit up at night underneath and screen with illuminated 3-Form panels to create a separation from the rest of the rooftop deck. On top of the pergola there are retractable shade canopies from ShadeTree that can be opened and closed with ease pending on time of year and weather. They block the sun but not the rain. The walls are sleek and contemporary using composite boards from Lumberock. The decking is modular ceramic tile and Lumberock decking. There is an aluminum fire table from Ore Inc in the center of the lounge area and some acrylic screening to help with privacy and wind. This clean and contemporary rooftop is on single family home in Wicker Park. Finally there is a dog friendly lounge and turf area with a great view of the sunset. The planter boxes are aluminum and hand made by Ore Inc.
