We finished this pond in August, at the height of the Summer heat, and have planted only a few very hardy plants to begin with. After the first rains in October, we will finish the plantings.

This is an example of a mid-sized southwestern backyard stone retaining wall landscape in Denver.

After remodeling their large Encino hills home a couple needed to revive their gardens front, sides and back with an emphasis on drought tolerant plant materials and hardscape. GLD Landscape Design created a dramatic contemporary Zen riverbed entrance garden featuring several pieces of unique Garden Art. The rear garden — previously a large undeveloped plot of dirt — was transformed into a meditation garden with pathway, fountain and hammock.

In this project the home owner was a furniture importer, so she had an amazing array of decorative elements to add to the design. After spending years traveling through Indonesia and India on buying trips, she wanted a taste of the tropics in her own back yard. We worked together to incorporate her beautiful objects into an undeniably tropical-feeling space. By carefully selecting plants and their placement, we were able to achieve the lush green feel of Bali or Hawaii in the Southern California climate without using a lot of water. After installation, this oasis is alive with birds and dragonflies. Lush green plantings create microclimates around the house that help cool the property on hot days. Integrating edible trees provides the homeowner with pomegranates, several types of guavas, lemons, limes, and bananas. Today, the homeowner rents out her home and garden for photo shoots and weddings.

Many outdoor rooms interconnect around this entire “Family Compound,” a back house, and adjourning guest home. There is everything you need to entertain a giant family and to have friends over for a pool party. Some elements include a huge agave orchard with courtyards, an outdoor BBQ kitchen, a vegetable garden with fruit trees, a swimming pool, patios and levels. The landscape design also addresses drought tolerance and organic gardening. This property had many existing trees that we wanted to include in the landscape design. Extensive rock walls, boulders and stone walkway around all the plantings.
