Lift and brighten any space in your home by refreshing your ceiling with a new coat of paint. Follow these tips to help you avoid lap marks and end up with professional-quality results.
1. Prep the room: Before you can begin painting your ceiling, you need to prep the room. Cover furnishings and flooring with drop cloths to protect surfaces from paint splatters.
2. Clean ceiling:
Make sure you have a sturdy, safe stepladder that remains steady as you reach for the ceiling.
3. Cut in with paint:
Use a 2- or 2-1/2-inch angled brush to cut in a 3- to 4-inch-wide band of paint around the edges of the ceiling.
4. Paint + Finish:
Use a 9-inch roller with a 1/2-inch nap to hold a generous quantity of paint. Keep rolling until the entire ceiling is covered. Let dry and apply a second coat and viola!

This tranquil Seattle home sits high on a hill with a lovely view in the Queen Anne neighborhood. The delightful family of four needed help filling the living spaces with furnishings that would be cozy, comfortable and work beautifully with the classic aesthetic of the home. Together we choose swivel chairs to maximize both conversation and the view, a nap worthy sofa in a lovely shade of blue and a cocktail table that is easy to move when the kids need an open space but also serves as an excellent place to play games and build puzzles. A soft and colorful rug, bold patterned drapery and a splash of accessories and accent furnishings were layered in to complete the room. The powder room received a rich new paint color to highlight some beloved family artwork and a decorative ladder was installed to add visual interest and provide a much-needed storage place for hand towels. The entry was lacking storage which we remedied with custom designed and built shoe storage benches. An easy to care for indoor/outdoor rug was added to protect the floor and provide a layer of texture to the room. The new cozy space now serves in function when entering the home plus is a great curl up place to enjoy the view while reading a good book!

This has been such a fun project! The client purchased an attractive mid-century modern home in Fairfax and immediately contacted us to assist her with the design of the home. She wanted assistance creating a comfortable, contemporary, relaxing space for her, her husband and pups to enjoy. The biggest challenge we faced was the sunken living room with it's not so well built built-in benches and outdated fireplace. We quickly set out to give her the space she was dreaming of. For the sunken living room we had the benches and had new linoleum plank flooring installed (ideal for older pups). We had a custom area rug created for times when she wanted to entertain or to feel a softer under footing. We designed custom sectional benches in a soft, velvety grey fabric and added accent pillows in pops of orange, gold and blue. The fireplace received a facelift. We added a stunning stone veneer over the outdated brick. To tall accent lamps and a beautiful new chandelier add ambient and task lighting to the space.
In the living room we created a comfortable and stylish entertaining area with a new sofa, two accent chairs and custom designed, custom made chaise lounge, ideal for late afternoon reading and naps by the window. A neutral foundation of grey and taupe sets of the pops of turquoise in the accent pillows and banding on the custom made draperies. New top down/bottom up woven wood shades add texture and allow for natural light and privacy at the same time. A modern acrylic ceiling fan is both functional and incredibly eye-catching.
In the dining room we recycled the customers sturdy dining table, giving it new life with semi-gloss paint. New upholstered dining chairs finish off the comfortable space. A new area rug anchors and a stunning chandelier draws attention to the space. An mirrored buffet provides storage and is accented by a gorgeous new mirror, lamp and accessories. New draperies and woven woods tie the space to the living room.

An over scaled family room with dark original shadow box paneling, large Carthage stone fireplace, and leaded windows, required a design esthetic that paid homage to the history of the home, yet created a space for entertaining large groups, while at the same time feeling warm and comfortable, and would also allow the homeowners to take Sunday naps in the often unused room. With the entry to the home also included in the overall dimensions, creating definition without walls was the challenge. Using an antique table that was purchased by the client many years ago as an entry table was the perfect answer. We took the Italian chandelier from the dining room, had it refinished to look old, and re-hung it as the entry fixture. An antique, nearly 18’ foot rug was found, and was the anchor to the room. Over scaled sofa’s, large cocktail truck, antique console tables, new “shiny” lamps, modern tables, and plush pillows all add to the warmth of this space. The room was also painted a warm gray/green to pull all the warm colors and textures together. Original artwork was also very important to the client, and represents their travels an individual taste.

Embracing the challenge of grounding this open, light-filled space, our Boulder studio focused on comfort, ease, and high design. The built-in lounge is flanked by storage cabinets for puzzles and games for this client who loves having people over. The high-back Living Divani sofa is paired with U-Turn Benson chairs and a "Rabari" rug from Nanimarquina for casual gatherings. The throw pillows are a perfect mix of Norwegian tapestry fabric and contemporary patterns. In the child's bedroom, we added an organically shaped Vitra Living Tower, which also provides a cozy reading niche. Bold Marimekko fabric colorfully complements more traditional detailing and creates a contrast between old and new. We loved collaborating with our client on an eclectic bedroom, where everything is collected and combined in a way that allows distinctive pieces to work together. A custom walnut bed supports the owner's tatami mattress. Vintage rugs ground the space and pair well with a vintage Scandinavian chair and dresser.
Combining unexpected objects is one of our favorite ways to add liveliness and personality to a space. In the little guest bedroom, our client (a creative and passionate collector) was the inspiration behind an energetic and eclectic mix. Similarly, turning one of our client's favorite old sweaters into pillow covers and popping a Native American rug on the wall helped pull the space together. Slightly eclectic and invitingly cozy, the twin guestroom beckons for settling in to read, nap or daydream. A vintage poster from Omnibus Gallery in Aspen and an antique nightstand add period whimsy.

We are back at our Floyds Fork Patio Home to share the Foyer, Study and Guest Bathroom with you. As you enter the home, there is a long hallway leading into the open living area. This long slim console table was perfect for the Entry. The shelves provide an opportunity to display favorite keepsakes. For the Study, we selected an oversized settee that had a twin mattress for the seat cushion for afternoon naps or small overnight guests. We played up the symmetry with matching metal tulip tables topped with super tall mid-century lamps. I love the fun zebra fabric we used on the window treatment. All of our neutral fabrics work perfectly with the homeowners’ existing rug. The custom shower curtain in the Guest Bathroom ties all of the finishes together and supports our overall color palette.
Since space is a premium in most patio homes, it is important to be mindful with your furniture selections. Pick pieces that will give you the biggest bang for your buck – a console table with shelves or a dual function sofa. Enjoy!

Many of us have 'that' space in our home that we simply don't know what to do with. My client's room is a great example of this design dilemma. Our homeowner was very clear that she desired this space to be used for more than just sitting. Her wish list included a makeshift home office, breakfast nook and entertainment zone. When we began this project, our client's room felt cold, cramped and uninviting. It was currently being avoided by the homeowner and used only as a 'catch all' space full of clutter. The tiny footprint (11' x 9' 11") did not allow for a great deal of furniture. Any item added to this space would have to really count.
A clean line high-top table and stools provided just the right spot for morning coffee and a place to set up a laptop for those days the client would be tele-commuting to work. The table and stools were from a previous project we had designed for her. The homeowner was so pleased that we could 're-purpose' these items in such a fun way.
A small scale loveseat in a luxuriously textured creme tone fabric created the perfect spot to stretch out for a quick cat nap. Tailored linen drapery panels shot with silver metallic threads throughout added a touch of softness and glam to this space A soft pearl grey paint continued the polish and sparkle to this tiny 'jewel box' room.

So there's a little thing that happens when you become a parent.... Sexy becomes a forein term. Spit up, poopy diapers, nap schedules, lack of time to shower, toys..... EVERYWHERE. Listen... We all try and keep every fragment we possibly can of our former selves après baby but its hard.
After everything these guys had gone through I wanted to give them a sexy kid free space where they could close the door and feel like a couple again. In their former lives they were savy New Yorkers and had many adventures traveling the globe. That's where I took my inspiration for the room. I was going for NYC hotel room Chic. How did I do?
